Going off past comments saying they like to stay near that 1st luxury tax, I'd say yes. Hoyer also likes to constantly bring up "intelligent spending" which could be an indicator of a spending limit.
Could go as far as saying having Hawkins as the #2 and now Counsell as manager is to try and help this team play above some kind of spending limit as well. They both come from small market teams so they always had to make due with less resources.
Regardless if Ricketts has given a limit to Hoyer, Hoyer has still allocated the resources he does have extremely poorly. In my opinion the state of the team is absolutely on both Ricketts and Hoyer/Hawkins.
An as far as them "willing to pay for Ohtani" the only reason I could believe they were actually willing is because he's and international phenom. He would've been more of a business move than anything else but he was never leaving California.

Exactly what i was saying all offseason. Knew he was a guaranteed 4+ WAR player & cheap for that value. But everybody was worried about him striking out. Which is laughable for this day & age of baseball

No one gave him the contract he looked for until very late he had to settle! No one said we should sign Chapman than Cody at this time last year!

I wanted to pass on Bellinger last off season and sign Chapman ! Bellinger is definitely not worth 27 million a year .

    • @mr.bohner6819
      @mr.bohner6819 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@johnmaskovich561 i just didn't understand the willingness to give Bellinger that contract but wouldn't give Chapman a cheaper one for more guaranteed production at a position we we're crossing our fingers on with Morel.
But yeah Bellinger is only worth about 20-22 million a year based on his 2 seasons with the Cubs so far. A season like '23 this year & he will have earned his money though.

Not sure about the LAD/NYY model, yes they were both in the WS this year but you think of the $$ those 2 teams have spent over the last # of years and except for the Covid season combined they have as many ‘ships as the Cubs. Sure those 2 are always in the conversation but throwing money at everyone isn’t the answer. (Not saying the Cubs way is the magic potion either, perhaps something in between.)

i think it is more of a daddy Ricketts and not Tommy Boy. I think Daddy Ricketts had said that the Cubs have to make a profit and can't borrow against any of the other Ricketts companies. That includes all the renovations to Wrigley. The Cubs have to make a profit and stand totally on it's own.

The answer to this is Hickory Street Capital. Crane's job is to task Jed to spend just enough to make it look good, so the fans fill the place. Any money made outside of the park is theirs to keep and not share with MLB. Someone needs to do a deep dive into what Hickory Street owns around the park. Make no mistake Crane is the Ted Phillips of the Cubs now that Theo is not around.

I really don't like the idea of trading Busch. He has the potential to get better and be a special player. Part of being a good GM is not just acquiring talent, it's developing the talent you already have and not giving it away. We've seen some guys leave the Cubs early in their careers, only to blossom on other teams, and at a low cost. Not enough attention is given to that aspect.
And is it "speculatory"? I would speculate that it is speculative.
    🙂

I've said this ad nauseum but it warrants repeating - The Cubs are willing to do, what is to them, one "big" contract at a time. Heyward was their old "big" contract, and now Swanson is the current one. I highly, highly doubt they're going to sign Fried, or any other big name players because they've got their "one" they're willing to do. This off-season, it'll be quantity over quality.

The main blame rests with Jed. No, there shouldn't be a salary cap of any type with the Cubs, but other teams do much more with much less. Jed has NOT spent money wisely. Too many misses, too much star level money for average players. So does the owner have the responsibility to chase bad money with more?

Yes jed has messed up, but i see teams with multiple 200 mill dollar players and 300 mill dollar players elite players in the history of cubs they never done that. Soto would change that cubs line up and help the young hitters confidences but ricketts won't go for it they using luxury tax as a excuse. Its crazy we third biggest market we can never afford the elite players i wish ppl would wake up see that and why are we 7th in payroll.Fans going to keep showing up for mediocre team spend money and sing go cubs go to mediocre team ricketts know that. Hey guys love the show! I listen everyday! I just wanted to add my 2 cents lol. With the prices of tickets and beer and food and with all of the lavish upgrades in and around Wrigley and the rooftops and anything else that I missed the Ricketts family have plenty of money to be just like the Yankees or the Dodgers. I have been a fan for the better part of 40 years now and my opinion is this. The Ricketts and Theo brought a World Series back to Chicago finally and they know without a doubt how loyal the Cubs fans and fan base is and they know that no matter how good or how bad the product of the team is it doesn’t matter because the fans are still going to fill the seats and spend money so they can just be mediocre and fill and pad their pockets and then once or twice a decade they will go out and make an attempt to improve the team to keep the fans interest up and keep the hope alive. I would be willing to bet they they could go out and get Soto and Burnes and whoever they want but they won’t because they are doing exactly what the Cubs do and if they didn’t get lucky with all the prospects they had in 2016 they wouldn’t have went out and gotten a Harper or a Soto or Ohtani. We need Shaw, Cassie, Triontos, Smith, to all come up and be the next core and then build around them and put the pieces in place and then they will have sustained success year after year. We won’t see a World Series run until 227 or beyond. Sorry for such a long respond lol

Owners who spend more than the value they create through the team absolutely do exist. They're filthy rich outside of baseball... team ownership is nothing more than an investment to them. I want an owner who wants to win more than they care to make a return on their investment. It's been done before, and it'll be done again. The irony is that owning a winning team in a tightly-restricted market will always return on investment. What kills an investment into team ownership is consistently losing.

For every Mancini, there is Cody for his first year! For every Smyly, there is Imanaga! For every Neris there is Leiter Jr, Roberts, for every Hosmer, you have Tauchman, Gomes. Common, no one can make every move right!!!
