I really really want someone to do a proper hard tract test with a GT and to do a head-to-head between a GT and a Limited on a track. I kinda think no one has because they are afraid of the results. There's no question that the SPT has more drivetrain loss so slightly less horsepower and torque at the wheels, but the adjustable suspension, steering and center diff are so much better that the manual cars , not to mention the speed of the shifts in "Sport+", the two additional ratios, and the ability for the transmission to actually behave like a true CVT (hold revs at peak torque while continuing to accelerate) under certain circumstances, that I think a GT would likely beat a Limited around a track
Drive one with the Sti exhaust and was pretty impressed with comfort and the transmission. I have a dsg golf r and it’s crazy how similar it felt in terms of snappiness!
I have a Premium SPT. I got it last year for $35,500. I put All Season Pilot Sport 4's on it. I live in Ohio where it Rains/Snows tons of hills. Its great for an AWD 4 door Sedan. Everyday driving is great!

The GT is missing so many features from the JDM version. 12.3 inch instrument cluster, memory seats, usb-c, rear heated seats, F1 Brake Light, rear wipers, pedestrian airbags, etc, etc. We got ripped off in the US.
the digital instrument cluster is absolutely pointless and stupid because Subaru just programed it to look exactly like the normal physical cluster with no additional functionality, its literally the exact same just LCD memory seats are fantastic if you share the car but pointless if you are the only driver usb-c is whatever (but lack of wireless CarPlay/android auto is very disappointing) heated rear seats would be nice but again not a big deal "F1 brake light" is just a rear fog light, either on or off, that's it. It's required in most of the rest of the world, and most cars that integrate it into the normal taillights still have them in the US (Mercedes, BMW, Volvo etc) rear wiper on a sedan is whatever. No one gives a crap about a pedestrian airbag because no one thinks they will hit a pedestrian. It's the kind of thing that costs a lot of money and does not influence sales at all so is only ever included when mandated by govt. regulations. They could have easily sold an exact copy of the S4 in the US but it would have been a $50k+ car and no one is going to pay that for a WRX
They don't want to call a CVT a CVT. Still don't trust this kind of transmission, no matter who makes it. I like the color and overall shape but still a big NOPE on that plastic side cladding over the wheel wells. I thought it might grow on me. It definitely stands out but in my opinion it's more of an eyesore. I definitely agree with Sofyan, almost 50k? There are better options.

Don't buy this car without also test driving a Civic Si, Elantra N, Mazda 3 AWD Turbo, or GTI. Way too much competition out there to just look at this car in the lens of its past glory. Times have changed and Subaru is struggling to keep up.
Drove a couple WRX's, bought an Elantra N. AWD is nice, but Elantra N is soooo much more fun. Plus my wife has an Outback Wilderness, so I have the turbo Subaru AWD-ness if I want it.
Can’t agree more. They haven’t pioneered nothing hybrid, plug-in. Other companies are offering awd in their models as well, with better mpg. Subaru will probably be end up being bought by Toyota entirely.
They could keep up if they wanted, but Subaru sells way too many crappy Crosstreks to give a damn about the WRX. Sorry but only a fool would buy this mess

Everyone seems to like it for its driving experience, but what about resale value? In our neck of the woods Toyotas are legendary for maintaining their value. Perhaps one shouldn't expect it from all other cars, but it still is an important aspect. Whats your take on selling a subaru?
The infotainment screen washout if wearing polarized sunglasses is a dealbreaker. Not trading glare for legibility, since other cars don't have this issue.
Helpful review. I understand Enthusiasts will always hate CVT's and practically any automatic transmission no matter how well they help t he car perform (sorry , but autos can row gears more quickly and often make better times). Still, Subaru's effort in refining their CVT shows. My '21 Outback XT, over time, has adapted its CVT so it's very responsive and generally well matched to the task at hand (something my previous Forester XT CVT's never learned how to do)..
Great review, You covered the GT well and explained everything that makes the GT different from the other trims. I agree the adaptive suspension should be optional on other trims of the WRX.Subaru's current CVT's are actually really good, very surprised.
Does not compare with other cars , so superior to all others . I own 2023 WRX GT , love it . Better than my 2018 model . Live in Philippines . No comparisons in reality ! Steve.
just some comments: the car defaults to "sport" when you start it and is where most people probable spend most of the time "Comfort" and "normal" use the same engine and transmission tunning, with the transmission using six virtual ratios. The only difference between "normal" and "sport" is the engine/transmission tuning, with the throttle map a little more aggressive and the transmission using eight virtual ratios. "Sport+" uses a very aggressive engine and throttle map and the transmission likes to hold revs, uses engine braking and aggressively downshifts. Something no one seems to ever mention though is the adjustable center differential the GT gets. On the manual cars it's a normal viscous open diff with 50f/50r torque split, but the SPT cars get a planetary gear diff with hydraulic clutch that defaults to 45f/55r torque split. However, on the GT when you set AWD to "sport" it changes the default torque split to 30f/70r, and honestly is a better center diff for non track use than the DCCD
Thank you - this completely changed my take... this is not the car I thought it would be. Missing too many features. Not in the market for one anymore. Really appreciate this kind of review. Facts with minimal commentary. AWESOME JOB!
Honestly if I'd have listened to these reviews I wouldn't have bought one but because I don't necessarily care what others think I did buy one and It has been so much fun to drive fast and responsive I've never heard anyone say this vehicle actually has a type of "Auto pilot" either which leads me to believe these reviews are a little rushed

Sure the STI is gone, but this CVT is actually really good from what I see. Subaru still needs to put faster software for their Starlink infotainment system. Still fairly laggy, which is not great, but it gets the job done. I just wish Subaru has faster processing speed for their cars in terms of the screen. My Hyundai Venue has a faster processing speed for that infotainment screen than this.
Honestly I wish manufactures would just give up on their own navigation etc. and just accept the fact that the vast majority of drivers only use CarPlay/Android Auto. (recent survey showed that 80% of prospective new car buyer said lack of CarPlay/Android Auto was a dealbreaker)
Considering its 43k (in this trim) and multiple times Sofyan said "most people change this aftermarket" really makes me question the value. The classic WRXs gave you power and AWD for a good price. But now think of all the cars you can get for 43k+
15k on my premium, 5.7 with my SPT. the GT is still too expensive by a couple thousand to be honest. It’s an amazing car and the transmission is the best I’ve used in years.
I don't get it. If you wish for a stepped transmission....why not just use the gears? A CVT is more logical when kept in the performance band....rather than fake "shifts".
I actually really like the look of that car, yes maybe is a little bit "weird" but I like it because is different and in my opinion have a strong personality, I get that the look is not for everyone, or you like it or you hate it
Hey this was filmed near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, down the street from my house! Really hate how car manufacturers are moving away from performance oriented cars to hybrids, the market is becoming boring. Save the manuals.
Thanks. I'm driving one in a couple days. Lifetime manual user but my daily is a Forester with the cvt and I kind of like it. 65 yo so I guess I'm finally an old man. Trying to combine my Forester with my Miata and cut back on the number of cars I own. We'll see!
I've seen one of these in a white color around my neighborhood and all those cladding just threw me off. I don't know what the Subaru designers were thinking when they made that decision tbh... It's a pass for me, but thanks for the video!
The issue is that the cvt is just not a great transmission especially for a wrx. A DSG would have been better. Also if you modify your car the cvt will fail barely pushing more than stock power. It's a bit underwhelming and the price is outrageous for a wrx gt.
As a long time enthusiasts who prefers a manual, but has a few automatics in the family fleet I can confirm that CVT transmissions blow. Just got the 24 Impreza RS that uses a CVT with similar 8 simulated gears. Its so sloppy and erratic, I hate it. Sometimes it fake shifts, sometimes it just revs like a CVT should, the lockup\unlock is harsh and sloppy. Its a cool little car with AWD for cheap. No way I will keep it past the warranty period because it already feels like its going to break.
I'm in a CVT group on FB and it's a hit or miss. It literally depends on who drives the cars. People beat the shit out of the automatics and wonder why the car doesn't perform well.

The power/torque numbers should be way better and even the fuel economy sucks, especially considering it comes with the CVT. My previous gen WRX got 30mpg on the highway and 25mpg combined, with a manual. Not to mention the stupid looking plastic cladding. This is a step backward, in my opinion.

I don't really see how a hatch is more practical besides folding down the seats. The trunk space on this car is quite impressive and the beauty of a sedan is separating your cargo from the cabin.
You get the ability to stack things higher. I wish I had bought an Outback turbo w/6-spd manual when I sold Subarus in 2013. Edited: change a word into English

Is this limited to 135mph? I would have thought it would be at 155mph much like all the others lin this performance range this a US specifc limiter. Still I think it is a great car with one of the best 4 wheel drive systems on the planet at this price point...
The SPT is a solid transmission. Just drive one. Their failure rate is quite similar to other "Geared" Transmissions. And you Have Warranty. Problem with throwing in a different transmission.... Is that Awd system. Subaru's is Unique, unlike other companies, Patented. The company prioritizes balance with their specific awd layout. No main components Offset, to achieve max stability in risky road conditions. You're now messing with the dimensions and internal layout, balance, and safety numbers. Not everything "fits" well with their Awd config. Not saying it isn't possible, but You need money. With the race to Battery powered cars and Emission standards, how much money do you think Subaru has if Toyota Owns 20 Percent. Subaru is still considered small. The company should be doing nothing else but getting sales and growing, So they CAN create the WRX/STI they think about when drawing the sketches. Compliancy and Emissions laws, That Holds Back all companies. Its all about how much you can pay for. Subaru excels at offering safe, adventurous cars at Such a Price in this "Plandemic" Economy. Still throwing out car's in the 30-40k range while other companies are giving you 50k corollas on 7% interest, with the same level of interior plush?? That price, safety and performance is a win for young working people.
The best looking WRX to date imo. I really love the back tail lights, reminds me of the BRZ, especially love the rear fenders and how they merge with the tail. The black cladding match the car perfectly fine. One thing I would add to this WRX, is a cherry red lip accent on the rear bumper, like the one on the S209.
I've always loved the WRX, but never been thrilled with the powertrain. I rented one on a trip to LA 2 years ago and had a blast on the mountain roads. That said, this powertrain is totally Outdated! It needs a Hybrid package to give it that "Rocket-Off-The-Line" torque feeling you can Only get from an electric motor. The Hybrid would also improve that horrible MPG while also greatly improving the HP and 0 to 60 numbers.
Thank you for this car review. If you didn’t already know, this car is available with the rear air vents and rear heated seats for the Canadian 🇨🇦market. I've got a '16 WRX Sport-Tech (CVT - yes, I know, but it was meant to be a city car). Subaru impressed me by standing by their CVT with a 10yr, 160k kms warranty. I'm at only 90k kms & yes, my transmission is about to be replaced under that warranty. A few things went wrong with it under warranty, like the barely used air conditioning & stock battery. Out of warranty, the transmission harness & a few suspension components had to be replaced. Subject to who likes them or not, I find my car looks great from the front, but 'mom jeans' from the back. The AWD system is fantastic. In snow, you can drift your bawls off & have a great time. Would I buy another one? Not a chance. I don't think Subaru care capable of producing a reliable engine. I've had probs for years - it would burn oil (synthetic oil since the factory spat it out), it would run rough even after warming up, and to come up with 268 hp, reliability-plagued twin-scroll turbochargers are just too much complexity for what you get. The paddle-shifting is very accurate & aggressive & I can get a better quarter mile than my friend's identical 6spd. I had Hondas most of my young life, so I knew when I stepped over to Subaru, that I'd be taking a bigger reliability risk but getting some power & a proper AWD system. I know the '23 isn't easy to look at, but hey it's none of my business what other people think of the car's appearance, I'm not in the age range of the target audience. My main gripe is power/torque. With gas at such ridiculous prices, I know that every time I floor it, it's costing me $5, and though I'd lose handling advantages, I think it's time for an EV. This sub-300hp & turbocharged complexities & gas guzzling, archaic tech, it's run its course. Sub-300hp is no longer impressive. I know the limitations of real WRC cars make them < 300hp, but they weigh nothing & are million dollar supercars. 271hp is not enough anymore. It's boring. You want to void your warranty on a complex engine by modding it to eke out another 30 100hp, you're richer than I am, congrats, I hope you have fun. But I want some REAL power now. Kia EV6 GT puts out what, 580hp? Apples & oranges, maybe, and the look of the Kia EV6 is so incredibly ugly & tacky, I'm amazed anyone buys one. Still, even a boring old Tesla Y can put out 480hp. The days of gas-guzzling, noisy, complex, beyond-warranty, turbocharged engines are soon ending. It's like a steampunk defibrillator - you can make it complex, but why bother, and what if it breaks. 271hp is silly. 25yrs ago it might have been impressive, but now, it's just a financial timebomb.
No, no, no. Sorry, but no. This Subaru Performance Transmission is a huge swing and miss on many levels. The worst thing about it is, this “performance” transmission is no faster than the manual, which almost entirely defeats the purpose of an automatic in a performance car, to say nothing of how offensive a CVT is in a performance car. I’d be far less offended by this car if they used a DCT, or even a regular automatic. Honestly, I’d take Subaru’s 5-speed auto before I take a CVT. Better yet the Aisin 8-speed auto would work great as well. At least a regular automatic would be less fragile in case you want to tune your WRX.
@@whoawoahh Not this one in particular, but I’ve driven enough CVTs to know what they’re about. The only CVT I could tolerate was Kia’s IVT only because it mimicked a regular automatic at all times and even then I’d still rather have a regular auto, especially in a performance car.

I have a Premium SPT. I got it last year for $35,500. I put All Season Pilot Sport 4's on it. I live in Ohio where it Rains/Snows tons of hills. Its great for an AWD 4 door Sedan. Everyday driving is great!
Same here! In Cincy and love it. 15k miles and it’s an amazing car. It may not be as fast as some of the competition, the handling and fun factor are off the charts.
@@josephs1701 I think it is plenty fast. the 0-60 video shown that the rpm stay right at redline, without doing the fake shift, which is very impressive. I bet it will be way faster than manual when doing rolling test, in real world traffic or on track. the only thing that will not do as good is doing drag strip launch which i don't really care.
@@tommyhsu2779 I agree! My highest in my SPT was 5.7 level, 5.4 but I was slightly downhill. Mine typically shifts and doesn’t hold the redline unless 0-60. It’s amazing in traffic.

The GT is missing so many features from the JDM version. 12.3 inch instrument cluster, memory seats, usb-c, rear heated seats, F1 Brake Light, rear wipers, pedestrian airbags, etc, etc. We got ripped off in the US.
It would be way more expensive with all those features Americans aren’t willing to pay $45k+ for a fancy WRX
Thanks government.
They also get power folding mirrors.
Bruh they have a rear wiper on the JDM version? I can’t see shit on mine when rains.
the digital instrument cluster is absolutely pointless and stupid because Subaru just programed it to look exactly like the normal physical cluster with no additional functionality, its literally the exact same just LCD
memory seats are fantastic if you share the car but pointless if you are the only driver
usb-c is whatever (but lack of wireless CarPlay/android auto is very disappointing)
heated rear seats would be nice but again not a big deal
"F1 brake light" is just a rear fog light, either on or off, that's it. It's required in most of the rest of the world, and most cars that integrate it into the normal taillights still have them in the US (Mercedes, BMW, Volvo etc)
rear wiper on a sedan is whatever.

Also have a 6sp Limited. I like it, and like the look except for the rear. But the GT is way too much money for what it offers.
23' Premium SPT here. I think it's a great looking car, and I am thoroughly impressed with the CVT.

Honestly, I would take the Legacy GT. All the same basic bits but with a comfy suspension and extended thigh support cushion. $45,000 Canadian and the only option is colour.
Its actually a great car. Not everyone gets the Legacy. Change the wheels and you'll get looks.
Wish we would get a Legacy GT here in the States, but I’d go for the Outback Touring to replace my 2005 Outback XT manual

I fully agree, it looks much better in person than in video and photos.
And the performance is supremely disappointing for the price. I hope it fails on the sales numbers, bc there's no way it's worth even MSRP.

Id still choose this over an Audi A4. My Grandpa years don't happen for another 30-40.
I've owned 3 Subies. I don't love the new design, but would still consider this because of reliability, build quality, and just the overall great experience I've had with my older cars.
You are the person I was looking for. Need your opinion on this.
I've always been a toyota driver. Now sold my old camry, and thinking about this wrx. Everyone seems to like it for its driving experience, but what about resale value? In our neck of the woods Toyotas are legendary for maintaining their value. Perhaps one shouldn't expect it from all other cars, but it still is an important aspect.
Whats your take on selling a subaru?
This car with a zf8 transmission would be a different animal
yeah it would slip and cost $1k to do fluid change. Would rather trust the Sub CVT.
I like WRX, the local biggest dealer is just in front of my condo. But really hope they bring back the hatchback version. Please Subaru!
Second a WRX hatch/wagon
Great review, You covered the GT well and explained everything that makes the GT different from the other trims. I agree the adaptive suspension should be optional on other trims of the WRX.Subaru's current CVT's are actually really good, very surprised.
Subaru did a good job on this gen!
Does not compare with other cars , so superior to all others . I own 2023
WRX GT , love it . Better than my 2018 model . Live in Philippines .
No comparisons in reality ! Steve.
just some comments:
the car defaults to "sport" when you start it and is where most people probable spend most of the time
"Comfort" and "normal" use the same engine and transmission tunning, with the transmission using six virtual ratios.
I bought a 23 base in white and I really love it. Maybe I'm in the minority but that's OK.
Thank you - this completely changed my take... this is not the car I thought it would be. Missing too many features. Not in the market for one anymore. Really appreciate this kind of review. Facts with minimal commentary. AWESOME JOB!
Honestly if I'd have listened to these reviews I wouldn't have bought one but because I don't necessarily care what others think I did buy one and It has been so much fun to drive fast and responsive I've never heard anyone say this vehicle actually has a type of "Auto pilot" either which leads me to believe these reviews are a little rushed
same! I got mine cause the wife hard vetoed another manual and I absolutely love it.

What other cars give you a 6 Speed Manual, Awd Turbo? Toyota? Thats 50,000 usd mate
The cladding around the wheels probably help for gravel road driving
Looks cool in black in person. However, I'd probably opt for the AWD Mazda 3 turbo instead
I don't understand why they didn't just put the 6 speed auto from the 86/BRZ. Would've bought the car if it wasn't a CVT

I've seen one of these in a white color around my neighborhood and all those cladding just threw me off. I don't know what the Subaru designers were thinking when they made that decision tbh... It's a pass for me, but thanks for the video!
I want a GT outback, lower it and get rid of the cladding
The issue is that the cvt is just not a great transmission especially for a wrx. A DSG would have been better. Also if you modify your car the cvt will fail barely pushing more than stock power. It's a bit underwhelming and the price is outrageous for a wrx gt.
I have a 2016 WRX CVT Stage 1+ with upgraded exhaust, suspension etc... runs great at 76k!

The power numbers can’t be much better in their Cvt they start slipping around 300whp.
I get 30 mpg highway easily in my Premium CVT.
I agree body clad must go body color it should have been
Honestly these look really good in person! Just sad and disappointed that they got rid of the hatchback…. Hatchbacks are more practical! by the time I wanted a WRX they got rid of the HATCH starting with the last gen LMFAO!!!!! SUBARU WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!!!! MAKE A WRX WAGON / HATCH AGAIN!!!! Subaru is about practicality!
I don't really see how a hatch is more practical besides folding down the seats. The trunk space on this car is quite impressive and the beauty of a sedan is separating your cargo from the cabin.
You get the ability to stack things higher. I wish I had bought an Outback turbo w/6-spd manual when I sold Subarus in 2013.

why no rear spoiler on the new WRXs? that pretty much kills the whole look

The front and side of the car I could live with, but that rear (especially the lower half) is just so bizarre and unnecessary.
I consider to buy 23' Subaru WRX GT sedan.
I just dont like the rear bumper. If they ever update it to look better to me, I'd probably get one.
95 degrees outside? Where were you? Palm Springs? 😂
Agree on the rear air vents. If this was the top upscale model, why not add that? I still think the back is so ugly on this car!
Someone commented Canada gets rear vents and rear seat heat
The side cladings are perfect if you use this vehicle as intended, off roards. If you baby this thing.. then stop complaining.

Man you are absolutely right, I would rather choose the legacy even the top version than this...................what is this? 100%not a legend WRX not sti 😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒
It's too bad the WRX has gone backwards. Elantra N is gonna give a good run for the money and being FWD.
Omg 6.2 and the cvt sounds so lazy lord!!!
I am wondering how much insurance would be on a car like this for a young person

The problem with this car, why did they not put a twin clutch in here? Can’t tune the wrx 😢 they need to stop putting these frail cvts
$4k less than a brand new S3 😂
Have you driven it yet
@@whoawoahh Not this one in particular, but I’ve driven enough CVTs to know what they’re about. The only CVT I could tolerate was Kia’s IVT only because it mimicked a regular automatic at all times and even then I’d still rather have a regular auto, especially in a performance car.
Analog gages are much better. Not everyone wants digital gages.
Lack of proper climate buttons ruins it
