  • The 12.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine on my Snapper Comet riding mower shattered it's connecting rod a few years back. I decided to attempt to rebuild the engine, replacing the connecting rod, piston, and rings. Grime on the engine wall prevented me from seeing where the rod had cracked it when in broke. I cleaned it all up, ground out the crack a bit with a dremel tool and filled it with JB Weld. Reassembly went slow because I had to keep referring to TH-cam videos to make sure I was doing it correctly. My first attempt to start it was not successful. It turned over and fired, but wouldn't run. I removed the valve cover and readjusted the tightness of the valve rockers. That did the trick and the engine now runs.
Remaining tasks are to purchase a new battery and new rear tires as the old, original tires are too cracked to hold air. All-in I'm at about $370 worth of parts, tools and materials which is still cheaper than a quality walk-behind mower.
