Porteuring or Poor Touring

  • Join me for an overnighter to the Brazos River for a great February ride. Instead of using any of my touring or bikepacking bags, I'm only taking what fits on my Porteur rack from Velo Orange to show cycle camping doesn't have to be the latest and greatest equipment. Some camping gear and a rack and you're on your way. On the Brazos River in Johnson, County Texas is Hamm Creek Park. I have the entire park to myself and it's so quiet and relaxing. I hope you'll join me for an overnight trip anyone can do.

I totally love Porteur Racks💯%! I had a 7-Rail CETMA Porteur Rack w removable fence, sadly they don't make the big boy anymore, on a Single Speed bike my main city ride in addition to the Tubus Locc rear rack for more than a decade and used it daily commuting touring + every grocery run until it was stolen at a break in. It was so convenient practical + missed by me that I put a Pelago Commuter Stainless Steel Porteur Rack in large on my custom Norwid touring bike, few month back, ditching the Tubus Duo Low-Rider which I rarely used besides touring instead as addition to the Tubus Cargo rear + Ortlieb Panniers, it's not as big like the CETMA (still coping with the loss) but it makes my life so much easier because I never owned a car, I'm 57.

    A classic by Loudon Wainright.
When I was a paper boy I had a milk crate with occy straps on the back rack.
Hopefully one more month and I'll be pedalling again.

Hamm Creek Park started as an old Corp of engineers park a long time ago. Remember General Dynamics that used to be in Ft Worth next to the old Carswell Air Forces Base? They acquired it from the Corp of Engineers to use as a company recreation area for it's employees and after General Dynamics closed the place became abandoned and grew up. A group of Johnson Could try citizens got together and got it from the Corp of Engineers and Johnson County got behind it and reopened it to the public. They have a equine trail and playgrounds for children and a nice boat ramp with RV or tent camping, plus a day use area on the river. You can see during the week how much pressure it gets. Nice weekends are a different story in spring and summer.

I just live about 1/4 mile from the building where I teach high school Ag, so I have threatened many time to build a bike for running around campus.
