The ratio of PO plantations to old growth forest on Sumatra should shock the global population to halt the destruction and conserve the habitats any intensive agriculture obliterates. Your message is clear Nayla and thank you for all that you do!
I like that you guys have focused on the perspective of an Indonesian woman; I feel that international conservation organizations often forget to elevate local activists. I'm truly inspired by what y'all are doing! Love from Texas.
i have moved to Denmark. ive never had the money to go to college in America. but now im here.....i plan to make a difference...im going to go to school ...school my self to learn more about the forest...and how to rebuild them.... and find a place in the world to improve it...rather it be saving the corals...or replanting a forest . ill travle anywhere and go how ever high or deep...to make a change
A Dane here. Warmest welcome to you, Amber! :) Also trying to do a difference myself by using and sharing Ecosia, as well as collecting trash, which is a major focus of mine (sadly even a problem here in a "civilized" society in Scandinavia with great infrastructure). United, but only united, we will save our planet. Cheers!
@BeeBomb Nayla would be a great ambassador to encourage the people to talk and discuss plans for the future with less Palm oil harvesting, very very difficult situation to be in. I use Ecosia and encourage others too.
@BeeBomb Boycotting is necessary, but I doubt that it is sufficient. We need more than that to prevent palm oil industries from damaging ecosystems, because (as Nayla paraphrased in the video), the palm oil tree is very efficient for the industry; large productions are easy to manage. What we have to fight is unsustainble palm oil, not palm oil in general. Furthermore, it actually produces grease [extracted from the fruits] at room temperature, which is very rich in saturated fats, about 6 times as much as the next most efficient plant at this. It's also very rich in vitamin A. Moreover, the grease is easily manufacturable ("hydrogened palm oil", for instance, often serves as a replacement for trans. fats), easily deliverable, and because of the productivity of palm oil exploitations, it's very cheap. People who produce such palm oil also rely on it. There's also the problem of identifying who you really buy the palm oil from and whether it's actually palm oil that you put/have in your products, as labeling is not very reliable, even for said "sustainable palm oil". Perhaps we need to boycott the products of certain unsustainable palm oil sources and to boycott big companies (such as Pepsi&Co.) with plausible unsustainable palm oil supplying whilst encouraging sustainable palm oil producers our best and sensitize companies and consumers on thoses issues. Or maybe we should rather start by boycotting the products from big companies that have nothing to do with palm oil and tell them to get better supplying for their palm oil and gradually propagate boycott towards products which [may contain, or] contain unsustainable palm oil if they refuse to improve their supplying chain. I don't really like the present international economy, and I rather see more degrowth economical principles being put in motion, but that is the best insight/solution I share when considering this economy.
@@spiguy yes, many people do not know this. For me the problem is not palm oil, but our oil consumption in general. So oil, butter, cheese, meet etc should have more value. Also we cannot trust these big companies, if they come along with sustainable palm oil, they do it already, and WWF and others are involved, but a big part is greenwashing, and the other part is, that they still cut forests for it. Indirectly, by using farmland and for new farmland forests have to go. Also we should be aware, that for countries like Indonesia and Brazil, forest is a big economic factor. They much much more forests then the old industrialized countries. So beside fighting for their forests, we should fight for our own forests and stop using huge amount of land from poorer countries. Which we need if we want to eat so much meet etc.
@@freespeechforall1069 not at all. Instead they now use other oil which needs much more space to grow. Coconut oil is possibly similar like palm oil but a little bit worse. Many of the others (sesame, olive, nuts, soy, sunflower, raps ...) need much much more land. Palm oil is the most efficient oil source. So instead of banning palm oil, we should "ban" oil and animal products in general cause they need an enormous amount of land, water and other resources.
Her story really touches my heart, beautifully shared. We, sometimes, maybe most of the time, forget to be grateful of what our mother Earth has given us. Instead of being grateful for what we have, we want more, better and best. Thank you for sharing this story with us Ecosia. I will always keep supporting you for doing such an amazing work. 💗
Thank you so much for sharing. I have been avoiding foods with palm oil as an ingredient for a few years now (it's also helped me eat healthier) but even though I knew it was destructive to forests...I didn't know exactly why. This video put it together for me. At the end of the day, a candy bar is not worth the destruction of our forests.
Please share this video.more adverts should be made on ecosia as it is so imperative for what it does.I love this woman. She really well and truly cares.ecosia is such a great browser.she spoke from her heart.i love the people who want to make a change because a vast majority of humans dont care and are reckless towards the eco system.thank you ecosia for making this browser and making a change.
How about don't buy packaged goods- as much as possible. That would send a STRONG message to capitalists profits. Seems to be the only thing they want to hear....
Wow! This video made me cry. I was dreaming of abolishing the palm oil trade and providing other jobs for the people of Indonesia. However, my perspective has been deeply opposed, and I am so grateful for that. I dream of helping the palm oil trade to be an ethical and beneficial job for all the people exploited and cheated. I am only a teen, but I dream of changing the way of selfish commercial companies who are overcome with unstoppable greed for money and disregard for all the beautiful people in Indonesia and the Amazon. Soldiers join the battalion and fight with me against this tragic atrocity!
I feel SO much for these beautiful organtugans... Palm oil is horribly destructive. I try my best to avoid it as it is driving these beautiful species to extinction... We cannot let that happen! Please eat organic fresh produce; palm oil is in a lot of junk food but also in: muesli (look for "palm-oil free" on the packages; there are some in big supermarkets); Nutella and other junk food. By eating clean, we already cut out a lot of palm-oil.
The palm oil industry is intrinsically destructive & extractive. It rewards deforestation & punishes those who oppose it, as many recent cases attest. The palm oil industry’s investment capitalists care only about money; they don’t give a damn about rainforests & any concern they show for orangutans is greenwashed lip service. Boycotting palm oil will cool the investors’ ardour and THAT will save rainforests the world over.
Since I discovered Ecosia my job is to show all my friends the easy way to use it ,and all the amazing things that you do to save the planet, God Bless you.
Thanks for your great story, Nayla. You indeed speak for the voiceless. Here, in Borneo (especially society around me in Sarawak), lots of tree cutting by irresponsible and greedy company just to plant palm oil tree, ripe the raw material for paper, rubber tree, you name it. I hate to say that they didn't use their brain, only their knee, without giving their second thoughts. To be honest, what a world we're living right now. Since I found Ecosia, I use it a lot for any searches (except when I can't find relevant search, which I would also use DuckDuckGo and Qwant) and it's fascinating to see those search counter to go up (so on behalf me, they would plant trees). I'm more than happy to use it every single day because I'm supporting the cause of balance ecosystem and basic human right of privacy. That's all my two cent of comment. Go go Ecosia! :D
So touching. We went to Borneo last year and were shockend to see the unimaginable amounts of palm trees were actual forests used to be. Since then we consume as little palm oil as we can here in the Netherlands. Also started to use ecosia in the hope we can something for reforestation. If ecosia reeds this, is there a possibilty for my and my partner to come and help out for like a few weeks in a summer period?
I would like to realise the same think in Africa and I'll be persevering. It's so beautiful to see the nature green, that make my happy and I have a tear.... I love the nature and thank to ECOSIA
this is my beloved country. I can't stand to see how many trees were lost by industry or from the haze yesterday. I don't want orangutans to be said to be pests for entering oil palm plantations. they lost their habitat

Hi, I have a suggestion about your searching engine website. First of all, I love the idea of planting trees while doing Internet research. But there is a major problem ; the background of your website is bright white and this color cause a big power cost. You could, then, switch for a darker background color and be benefictial for the environment. Thank you for your consideration. My best regards.
cette jeune fille est très émouvante et on voit bien que les "sans-voix" la touchent...soyons les porte-paroles des sans-voix dans le monde entier et prenons garde à notre consommation alimentaire, sans huile de palme!
This is a very complex problem & people tend to quickly blame palm oil when in fact, rapeseed oil & other types of oil require more land to produce the same amount of oil due to the yield differences. My personal opinion is, the government should guide these palm oil companies to be more sustainable to the environment & the workforce that depends on it and at the same time, they still have to cater to the growing consumer demand.
I agreed. People have lost their connection- and it's time to "wake up"! I make a point to read labels as I don't want this - and skip packaged food anyway! It is basically garbage.
If Indonesia and Malaysia do not plant palm oil, but other crop, more forest will still be destroy, because palm oil got the highest yield per kilometer square. Those who love forest should not use wood product, lot of jungle being deforest and the timber product being export to those who said the are against deforestation.
