Mary, thank you so much for this! It was so so lovely to sit and chat to you about, well, pretty much everything. Music has been so incredibly good to me, but the best bit is the paying it forward part. All of us musicians are just trying to connect with other humans; to feel less alone, and to reach out to others. It still amazes me that anybody - not least someone as talented as you - might take some inspiration from anything I've done. I'm just bumbling along here, making it up as I go. I'm humbled that it means something to you and so grateful that you would go to the trouble of making this video and sharing it with your fans. It's been wonderful watching you grow your following and build your world - on your own terms too. Be proud of what you've done - I'm proud of you. Much love, Nerina x
It was a great watch. I loved your song "Truly" back in the day :)
I’m from Australia. I vividly remember sitting in the bunch of grapes pub on Brompton Road about 15 years ago, just having a drink and Sophia came on in the background music. With only the word fire in my mind, I somehow found you and your music. I couldn’t get to Jersey at the right time, but saw you in Exeter and Bath in 2014. I literally discovered the heart is a lonely hunter two days before Christmas. Your music has enriched my life and I try to share it with anyone who is willing to listen.
Thank you for music and lyrical genius Ms. Pallot - you're so criminally underrated I wrote to my MP. Waiting to hear back. Bests. J
Mary, I am never going to get any work done if you don't stop introducing me to these wonderful artists where I go down the rabbit hole and have to listen to all of their music. It's really very, very irresponsible of you. Please don't ever stop. 😃
I know what you mean! …. Nerina Pallot is awesome
And I had never heard of her until now
Thank you Mary Spender ❤
Ha ha--yes, my sentiments exactly, Mary continues to introduce us to these incredible artists. She also turned me onto Jenny Lewis who is really something! Never stop Mary, the inspiration is contagious!
She’s crazy underrated, I’ve been following her for years and she just gets better and better.
Her albums The Sound and the Fury, Stay Lucky and her latest one are all incredible and are her best albums but she never misses for me and always comes with something fresh and different from what she did before.
I hope one day she’ll get some proper recognition, I find it so sad how under-appreciated she is! She’s probably my fave female artist at this point.
I really enjoyed this, thanks!
I guess meeting your heroes and inspirations isn't always a disappointment, you are one of the lucky ones Mary.
Two sisters that ARE DOIN' IT FOR THEMSELVES. Got to say I find Suzanne Vega pretty inspirational too.
Thanks Nerina for inspiring our Mary 👏👏👏👏👏🥂
I had the pleasure to see her in a Barry Gibb concert in Manchester where she played as invited performer (yes I went the all the way from Madrid to see Mr. Gibb). What a great discovery!!. She is an amazingly talented musician and a great human being. Kind enough to answer back unknown fans on social media. Indeed, a great source of inspiration, just like you!
It’s such a treat listening to these videos. The intelligence and thoughtfulness of the narrative is addictive. 🎉
I also saw Nerina first supporting Suzanne Vega - same tour - and have been a fan ever since. Still have the signed CD! My wife-to-be was with me and we used her music at our wedding.
Got a few of her albums. The song "Blood is Blood" is still amazing. This was a great interview. Thanks for taking the time to record it and share it.
Aaaaah! Thank you so much for this. Okay, quick flashback to the year 2001, before you could play any song you'd like in a matter of seconds.. I'd leave MTV/VH1 running in the background all day long, waiting for Nerina's 'Patience' to be on. Then, I'd sprint to the television and raise the volume all the way up. I've been following her music for years, indeed noticing times when she was off the rader, unfortunately. She's a real treasure and a true inspiration ❤🔥
Nerina Pallot is an absolute treasure, so talented and her skills are very under appreciated, But I kind of like the fact that I feel part of a group that have a common interest not shared widely. Her voice is amazing, I loved her sense of humour especially when she was doing her home video sessions. great vid Mary Spender thank you.
I think I met Nerina first on the same tour. And yes, her friendship with her fans is great. It's been a great journey to be part of.
Thank you for interviewing Nerina. I have loved her music since 2003-2004. Idaho is still one of my all time favorite songs.
Thank you so much for pointing me to an artist that I for some reason totally missed all those years! I just listened to her take on "Love will tear us apart" and it was quite a revelation.
As role models go, you picked a fine one. Waiting for you album to arrive.
Greetings from Germany!
Yikes!!!! I paused this video to see what a Nerina Pallot song sounded like… the song I found first is called:
Everyone’s gone to war….
What a great tune!!!! And video!!!
Love is a drug I think we’re all sober
She’s a keeper!!!
I subscribed to her channel right here and now!
Thank you for posting this
No wonder you liked her right out the gate back in 2005
She’s awesome ❤
That song was all over the airwaves around 2005. I think it got to number 14 but it should have made top 5.
This was a great video. It is amazing when you get to meet your heroes. Never forget that you, Mary, are just such a hero for many of your fans as well. You are an excellent example of what a musician should be and we thank you for it. Stay Awesome! :)
I remember hearing Everybody's Gone To War back then. Great song. Her asking you if you wrote your own songs is the most important thing she could've said and all that matters. The world is so saturated with great singers, soaring productions and brilliant musicians - all releasing mediocre songs.
always love your artist interviews mary
What an insightful episode and a fabulous artist. Thanks for introducing me to Nerina.
Wonderful story, Mary! Thank You. ❤
Great interview! Thanks.
Miss Mary Spender, you inspire me. Every day with every video and every song.
I have been following Nerina since the very beginning. Shes an amazing musician and was just the launch pad for so much of my music taste as I followed her to so many songwriter nights and got to see other amazing artists along the way. FIres is probably the most played record in my collection. Brilliant interview Mary.
Love Nerina! What a treasure of a musician. The Sound and the Fury is magnificent!
I love Nerina. I’ve seen her live!
I can't remember how I found Nerina. I do remember following her around London at lots of small gigs. In the period just after she had been dropped by Polydor
I am also a huge fan of Nerina, great to see this interview!
This was really inspiring. Thank you.
Thank you Mary, this was wonderfully inspiring! 🙏
That was a wonderful interview, thank you so much Mary and Nerina! You are both amazing story tellers! :))
Thanks for introducing this artist .. loving her work.
THANK YOU for this video! I used to listen to "Sophia" non stop years ago and had completely forgotten about the tune and Nerina. So happy to have rediscovered her music!
Frustrated Superstar was a great album. Such raw talent and organic sound.
I'm sorry to say I've never heard of Nerina before today. What a lovely woman, thanks for the introduction Mary. Now excuse me while I go listen to her music.
I'd never heard of Nerina before now. Thanks for this interview Mary. Just listened to one of her songs from the Fires album... Now I'm hooked. 😎👍
Good to see you both.
Saw Nerina support Joseph Arthur back in the whenever. Much as I adore Joseph Arthur and everything he did was perfect. My memories of that night are pretty much all of Nerina Pallot. Every articulated finger movement and eyebrow gesture was perfect. Kinda made me rethink how all this shit works.
Nerina is greatness! I have clearly not spent enough time with Mary, new respect, new subscriber!!!
This was lovely to watch Mary. I've photographed Nerina in her home and at shows for many many years including the image featured in your thumbnail which is what caught my eye while I was scrolling. Really enjoy your work having discovered you through this video. New subscriber right here. Let me know if you need a photographer in the future. I would love to work with you :)
Tommy x
Nerina motherfucking Pallot! God, I love that woman. Ever since 2009 when I first heard Sophia. Absolutely incredible. I’m so glad this video showed up in my recommended
Thank you, Mary 🙏🏻
One, for new music to listen to, and two, for the inspiration to keep creating as an older artist.
Be good to you 🤍
Wonderful video. Thank you for a proper introduction to Nina
It's always a great thing when you can make a living doing something you love Mary....perfect. Looking forward to listening your CD in October! Going need to find a CD Player so thank God for digital lol. x
Hey Mary---well, you've done it again! First Jenny Lewis ("She's Not Me") kills along with her other material, now Nerina Pallot!! I just listened to "Bring Him Fire" and am completely knocked out...she's got such power and grace! I loved both of your stories, from her inspiration for you to her losing her voice and having her fans sing her songs for her at the Christmas gig. That is beautiful--thanks for introducing her to me! Looking forward to your album in October! 😀
Glad I met her again on your channel, I'd forgotten I had a couple of her albums. With you on Sofia, with Damascus a very close second.
What an inspiring way to begin the week, continue to "ride the wave"!
Thank you Mary for introducing me to Nerina, I look forward learning her music I am certian. A great interview and story indeed!

Have a similar experience with Nerina although I’ve never met her. But she changed my life too, and the way I write songs. My personal favorites are the more commercial ones though, with Learning to Breathe being my all time favorite!
Interesting clip! Thanks!
Great interview!
Well you met your hero who inspired you to pick up the guitar! You both sound sweet to me! Thank you Mary!
Lots of wisdom here ! And yeah, the full interview on Nebula is even better.
That's funny. I've listened to Nerina's "Fires" record for years and never really dug any deeper into her as a person aside from the music on that particular record. I always assumed she was an American artist with the most gentle accent she could almost be British!
I also always assumed she was just some indie artist with a small cult following that never went anywhere beyond that record. I'm so happy to hear that she was way way more successful than I had given her credit in my head, and I mean, she truly deserves it.
Mary this was a good interview with a very interesting artist. She has a vision (not unlike you) and she pursued it. Bravo to both of you. Nerina was and is still worthy of your admiration. Thank you for the this interview. I will certainly watch the full interview on Nebula!
Hello Mary, ill have to check her Music out ,Thanks for this Video ❤❤❤
Wow! I actually related a lot to this interview. Not really to the events, but the feelings.
9 times out of 10, I feel overwhelmingly inadiquit. "I should have released two albums by now. I should be better at singing/writing/producing/drawing..." even though everyone seems to praise you for whatever reason. Paired with the rather morbid feeling of not knowing how long you've got, it's ugly.
At some point though, you have to muster up a little self-belief and carry on in what you believe. Hearing how Nerina Pallot did that is honestly so comforting and empowering.
So, yeah...Imma keep doing what I'm doing
Thanks for the video ^-^
Didn't know her before. Listened to some songs now. "Circus" and "Sophie" touched me in special way. As a lover of Joni Mitchell I think I explored a new treasure. Thanks for that.
I have been a Nerina fan for years. I saw her on a TV programme talking about Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, thought 'Who is this interesting musician who seems to know what she is talking about?', looked up her music and that was that.
Every enjoyable! I will check her out.
She’s so lovely. Never heard of her personally. Thanks
You’re so awesome!
Your talent inspires others
I thought I was the only person who bought Dear Frustrated Superstar! I haven't heard any of Nerina's albums since The Graduate but I'll definitely be catching up. 🙂
Hey Mary, I like you and I like your stuff...I am besotted with Nerina (in a totally appropriate way) and I love her stuff. I've been a fan since hearing Sophia on the radio when it was released. A few years ago we saw her live in a tiny room in Hebden Bridge. She's amazing.
Thanks for introducing us to her. And now. Instead of thinking what she would do, think what would Mary do? Honestly, what would Mary do? Now how can knowing this woman who inspired me teach me to use the tools she uses. Assuming they work for Mary. Much live and respect. Dig what you do.
So awesome that someone's simple question changed your life. Amazing how that happens...
Nerina has been a long time favourite of mine, too. One subtle thing that makes her a particularly great live act, that you didn’t discuss in the interview, is the importance of the patter between songs. Because she has such an engaging personality, she can run on with zany chatter like a Radio 2 graveyard shift DJ and draw us all in with it. I am not sure what can be learned from that , though. As a much smaller time performer, I think of her and make an effort to talk between songs, but I no more have her charm than I do her singing and songwriting abilities, alas.
Thank you,Mary! Nerina is so self effacing, but I think Sophia is to Nerina as Blue is to Joni Mitchell. I've not had the pleasure of seeing her in person. Bucket list.
Fantastic interview, I appreciate how you and other artists generously introduce me to other artists' work. Like other smart performers, it's great hat she will write songs for, or accompany other, better known artists in live performance, rather than sit brooding as an "artist" until their turn in the spotlight arrives..
Awesome 👏
Just Subscribed 😊😊
Thank you for passing on a part of your inspiration.
Thanks!
I have met Nerina quite a few times and once spent most of an election night exchanging Twitter messages with her, especially about the late Frank Dobson, who was MP for Campden and a favourite of hers. A couple of my photos are on her Wikipedia page, which were taken at the Cornbury festival some years ago, a venue were I've also seen Suzanne Vega perform. The idea that two of my favourite artists were on the same bill and I missed it is a huge shame.
nb. I seem to recall Nerina wasn't too flattered by those photos...
🖤🖤🖤
I'm a man of a certain age and why Nerina Pallot wasn't a bigger star, I've no idea. I also remember listening to Vanessa Carlton around the same time and again why she didn't get the recognition she deserved is a mystery. Songs they both produced were outstanding and stood out from some of the pop dross floating around at the time. Loved the interview with Nerina.
See I have a theory.
This does happen a lot....
We see good talented singers/bands make good songs then disappear.
...
Nerina went through a few labels.
I suspect a lot of labels want to produce peppy pop songs because they know they will sell.
..
Whereas the artists would like to continue in their own style they've created/crafted for themselves.
Only for the label to prefer to take a lower risk on a pop song, rather than take a chance on a new talent with a distinctive sound.
(A commercial unknown?).
...
So my theory is, after a group or singer gets the one hit single they want to continue down that route while the label - the ones paying for all the studio time -
Want to go down another..
Hence the split & in some cases obscurity.
..
Imagine spending years learning your style & perfecting your craft only to be shunted down the pop music route because it's less of a commercial risk for the label.
....
This is why I believe modern music is so bland.
Labels stick to tried and trusted formulas.....
..
I'm going back a bit now but,
How in anyone's mind could Mr Blobby get to number one?🤷...
Nerina's Fires, Sarah Mac lachlan and Natalie Merchant kept me sane on many occasions.....
The challenge to produce anything to catch the public to feel the need to procure the item tangible or not is extremely difficult. I am so intrigued and so surprised to see what makes it and what doesn't. Keep the signal going strong 💪 ✌️ 😎, thank you for the great information and efforts you put into this ❤
Do you think there's an element of luck involved for an artist to make a hit single?
Right place, right time, right people...
..
@@stuartd9741 oh yeah definitely 📶💪
Beautiful interview, you are a breath of fresh air, I follow you, and Rick Beato, and a lot of musicians. So I wonder if you have ever heard Extreme ll: Pornograffitti, When I first Kissed You? I know the hits are More Than Words and, Hole Hearted. This is one of my favorite songs! I hope you get to enjoy it. Best Wishes to you and yours from across the pond!
Interesting interview, thank you. You two should do a collaboration.
Humble, talented, fearless. Mary, can I borrow your hero?
Please do a cover of Mr King! I can't work the guitar out so I want to copy you!
Good Program! Thank You!
I’m going to have to check this artist out. Never heard of her. I don’t think she ever gained any traction in the states. I’ll have to check her Music out and see what she sounds like.
I like her. I’ve added her to my Amazon Music rotation.
She gives me a Natalie Merchant vibe. Good stuff as always Ms Spender.
Saw her supporting Bryan Adams stunning artist
Very nice of you to honour the impact that she had on you.
Me too... 🤗❣️💋
Very interesting and very well put together. The 'music industry' is such a weird place, brilliant talent often ignored/dismissed/forgotten by mediochre middle management morons and wanabees. Great doco, great music. Thanks. :)
Didn't know of her so had a listen. Very talented. Can hear a bit of Kate Bush influence.
inspiration squared
Nerina is fantastic! It's such a shame she had to find out the hard way that the music industry is full of parasites living off other people's talent. Continue to stay independent Mary, it's hard work but you stay in control of your own destiny.
Indeed.
What I took away from this.
Apart from the somewhat convoluted journey to recognition as an artist..
Is the fact Nerina will reap the benefits of her talent rather than some faceless agent..
Nerina is a goddess 🥰🥰🥰
I remember the hit single, which I thought was cool and also hearing an interview on the radio. Since then I'd forgotten about Nerina almost completely. But now I'll check her out again and maybe check out a gig if she plays nearby.
Mary, you're beautiful
Oh hi, 2005 was 18 years ago?
BRB, crumbling to dust.
Uhhh, isn't that you in the thumbnail? (again, great thumbnail)
Her story sounds more than a bit like Aimee Mann's.
I just watched the top of the pops performance. She is being WAY to hard on herself. I have been gigging for 20 yrs and had way worse gigs than that! I thought it was pretty good...
