Jagjit Singh, born Jagmohan Singh); (8 February 1941 -- 10 October 2011) was a prominent Indian Ghazal singer, songwriter and musician. Known as "the Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife, another renowned Indian Ghazal singer Chitra Singh in the 1970s and 1980s. Their combination album comprising music from the films, Arth and Saath Saath is the HMV's largest selling combination album of all time.Sajda (An Offering, 1991), Jagjit Singh's magnum opus double album with Lata Mangeshkar holds the same record in non-film category.He had sung in numerous languages. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2003.
Singh is credited for the revival and popularity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by choosing poetry that was relevant to the masses and composing them in a way that laid more emphasis on the meaning of words and melody evoked by them. In terms of Indian Classical music, his style of composing and Gayaki (singing) is considered as Bol-pradhan, one that lays emphasis on words. He highlighted this in his music for films such as Prem Geet (1981), Arth and Saath Saath (1982), and TV serials Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). Jagjit Singh is considered to be the most successful ghazal singer and composer of all time in terms of both critical acclaim and commercial success. With a career spanning over five decades and a repertoire comprising over 80 albums, the range and breadth of his work has been regarded as genre-defining. He is the only composer and singer to have composed and recorded songs written by Prime Minister - Atal Behari Vajpayee - also a critically acclaimed poet - in two albums, Nayi Disha (1999) and Samvedna (2002).
Singh's 1987 album, Beyond Time, was the first digitally recorded release in India.He was regarded as one of India's most influential artistes. Together with sitar legend Ravi Shankar and other leading figures of Indian classical music and literature, Singh voiced his concerns over politicisation of arts and culture in India and lack of support experienced by the practitioners of India's traditional art forms, particularly folk artists and musicians. He also lent active support to several philanthropic endeavors such as the library at St. Mary's School, Mumbai, Bombay Hospital, CRY, Save the Children and ALMA.
Singh toured the UK in 2011 and was due to perform with Ghulam Ali in Mumbai but suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on 23 September 2011. He was in a coma for over two weeks and died on 10 October 2011 at Lilavati Hospital, in Mumbai. He was cremated the following day at Chandanwadi Crematorium in Mumbai.
A number of tributes have been paid to Singh after his death,and some tried to encash his popularity which was criticised by his wife.
In 2003, Singh was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, by the Government of India
In 1998, Jagjit Singh was awarded Sahitya Academy Award, a literary honor in India. He was awarded this literary honor for popularizing the work of Mirza Ghalib.

Dear "Psyche1954"..you are the only one so far in decades, who has a negative comment or opinion. Just look at the title of the album. It is "Close to my heart". Jagjit is not trying to prove that he is better than all these singers, whose songs he chose to include in this video, rather he is paying tributes to those singers whom he loved and respected. That is so nice of him. Sorry My humble opinion....

I first heard Jagjit Ji's ghazal in 1981, HOTON SE CHOO LO TUM, MERA GEET AMAR KAR DO, from film Prem Geet. I was then 18 and never looked back when it came Jagjit Ji's ghazal. I am one of the many Big fans of Jagjit Ji's ghazals. Boss you are simply unparalleled in your line of ghazal singing. You are truly the Ghazaljit Singh of India. I listen to your ghazals at least once a day, Dil ko bahut sookoon milta hae. We all miss you.

after the concert finished all r gone by car heavy rain no bus no auto i walked and reached my home its around 15 kms

I was affected emotionally for sometime by Jagjit, Ghulam Ali Mehdi Hassan, Attaullah Khan, Chandan Das, Talat Aziz, Zafar Ali, Lata, and i even now dont remember their names. Honestly it is really the way of sadist people. I studied Islam and found the healing and treatment of my all the wounds and injuries which were inflicted upon my mind, heart and soul by beautiful prayers. I was so much drowned and intoxicated by ghazals, believe me i memorized hundreds and thousands of ghazals by heart. But by the Grace and Mercy of My GOD I came out of this sad life. Now I am so happy even without ghazal. There was a time when i thought i cannot live without ghazals in my life. I was a singer (not praising myself) (and not famous) becos i was not singing to become famous but to spill out the blood and sorrows of my heart. But believe me I have really found the treasure of life and light and happiness in Islam way. It is the way of Love and True Beauty what I was searching in Ghazals before. But i do respect you all my friends becos I was you once upon a time. I am not here to tell you that i am better or happier than you and you are not. But I just want to share with you my life experience because i have always loved the ghazal lovers. They have love, mercy, commpassion, kind heart, humanity, patience, respect for life. I love you that is why I want all happiness and success for you.

In fact I didn't draw any comparative advantage between you rather after listening to one Jagjit it appears to me Jagjit with his painful eyes asks me 'why do you want to leave me. Am I not a good singer? ' on the other hand, Chitra, in one of your pictures your two eyes are so much painful that drags me away with my thoughts ringing 'why Chitra is crying? Is she so much helpful? Then within a moment I realize that these are the tears of love binding both of them.
I m only 21 but this is my heart beat because without this voice I m ot stay in this world 🌎

I was introduced to Jagjit Sir by my father in 1991 with the album Someone Somewhere dedicated to his departed son. Its been 32 years and I am still a big fan and will continue for the rest of my life.
