    In this video, I take an unusual and somewhat random route - Norwich to Exeter on Flybe. Flybe have an extensive domestic UK network and operate on a low cost basis. Why fly from Norwich to Exeter? Well, England is strange; try taking a car or train north to south. It's fast and there's good direct infrastructure. East to West? No chance...
    Norwich Airport is interesting in that it charges each passenger £10 to depart from the airport - a "passenger development fee". So, while the fares are low from Norwich, mainly because of low airline fees, the airport still makes it back by charging you to pass through security.
    This flight took place on a stormy day in Eastern England, so the raindrops on the window made for some challenging filming...
    Enjoy the video.

    Another top trip report Paul! I've always wondered what it is like to fly FlyBe. I know it'd be difficult as regards not filming people, but I always want to see what the cabin and the seats are like whenever possible. I guess if you loiter and be the last one off you might get a chance on occasion? Will have to send you through the dates of my US trip just in case we're at the same airport on the same day! Oh, and when we'll collabbed on Eurostar, then howsabout Barra?? On my bucket list for sure. All the best.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Andrew Ditton Cheers Andrew. This was a rare occasion where I’d forgotten to bring my GoPro. I use a GoPro on a backpack strap to film walking on the aircraft etc, which gives you a view of the whole cabin. Barra is on my bucket list too! The logistics always annoyed me though. It seems criminal to go straight there and back without going elsewhere in the islands, and the car hire in Barra is expensive. When are you off to the US? I’ve seen shorter bus ride to the plane. In fact it was so short it was legit quicker to walk. Basically the plane was parked right in front of the gate but they insisted on a bus so a bus pulls up we get on and it does a 3 point turn so it can pull forward to the aircraft.

  • @olivethrush7450
    @olivethrush7450 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice one Paul.
    Better a short dry bus ride than a wet walk on the apron like we get. I see Norwich have cottoned on the the "Airport Development Fee" scam. They did that at Blackpool (£10 a pop)a while back but they still went bust. I wrote and asked for all mine back as it obviously had not been spent but they never replied. LoL.
    Nice touch using the flight mag for background notes.
    More please.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Olive Thrush Not sure it's a scam as such, basically the airport will get your money one way or another. Either they charge airline fees per passenger which they pass on to you, or they charge you directly (and the airline gets to advertise lower headline fares as a result). Not sure how successful it is though in terms of raising money, it only applies to departures as well. Hmm!

    Just did a return Exeter Norwich Exeter. Embraer 195. Overall excellent. I'll never drive this journey ever again. Two things of note: The pilot didn't land well in Norwich and there was a nasty delay on the return at Exeter before we could disembark apparently because we were not an intercontinental flight which take priority which spoilt the otherwise excellent timekeeping.

    Anyone else question why we have so many airports in the UK? Just seems to be an awful lot in a relatively small country.

    • @jameslovestokyo
      @jameslovestokyo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A couple of reasons.
      Firstly, we're an island, and for many people flying is cheaper, quicker and more convenient than using the Euro Tunnel or ferries to connect to neighbouring nations.
      Secondly, the UK population is about 65 million, which is similar to France, but in about half the area. So our population density keeps demands buoyant.
      Thirdly, it has been the policy of successive governments (since Thatcher) to privatise almost anything owned by the state. So London has a half dozen privately owned and operated airports that are in competition with one another. Many other countries think differently, and airports remain in state or public ownership, with resources poured into one single airport per major city.
      Fourthly, our infrastructure is not as good as some other nations, and what we do have is generally radial from London outwards. France, Germany, etc have high speed rail lines, including inter-regional, that have all but eliminated the need for domestic flights. Norwich is so badly served by road and rail that the airport can sustain multiple daily flights to Manchester, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, etc.
      Finally, our London airports are congested, so many passengers connect through overseas hubs. KLM serve no less than 15 UK airports from AMS multiple times a day. Emirates have dozens of daily flights, including many A380, to 6 UK airports.

    • @manlikevulcan3741
      @manlikevulcan3741 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jameslovestokyo you've also missed out because they're cheap to build. Most airports are converted RAF bases.
      Lets take this to Doncaster Sheffield airport, that was an old bomber airfield. There are many RAF bases due to the battle of Britain with such high demand.

    What's with the Airport Development Fee? Shouldn't that be included in the total ticket price? I had no idea where Norwich or Exeter were,so I stopped the video where you are looking at the FlyBe domestic map and discovered you were flying from the east coast to the roughly southwest coast of England,glad to see the weather improved somewhat at your destination,doesn't look like you ever got above the clouds for blue sky and sun

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tony Ebikeme Jr It's basically a passenger fee. Most airports just add it into the airline fee leading to a higher headline fare, I think.

    Can beat you with the short bus ride, in Sarajevo they bus you a total of 30ft, you used to be able to walk but after the airport bought some busses you no longer are able to do that. By time everyone gets to the bus you could have walked across and boarded.
    I've not seen a boarding ramp like what you used in the UK before, just in the USA and Australia,.

    The routes being scrapped at the end of October. A pity but It's no wonder. I've never been on it with an even remotely full plane.

      All routes using the E195 are being cut regardless anyway. Shame they couldn't replace the Exeter run with a Q400 though

    What a strange route. Was the flight full and what's the attraction for Flybe flying this route ?

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +bkkseagull About 50-60% full, going east to west in England is a pain over land. I think the route loses money and is just a way of cycling an E95 between its Norwich base and Exeter base. It's definitely got niche appeal for an enthusiast though!

      Regional & City Airports Ltd. own both Norwich and Exeter Airports. FlyBe and R&C came to an agreement a couple of years ago to provide seasonal service from both EXT and NWI to AGP and ALC with EXT based crew and a/c. The plane flies EXT-AGP-NWI-EXT (crew change) EXT-NWI-AGP-EXT one day and then ALC the next. The routes to Málaga and Alicante now operate all year round, albeit less often in the winter. As it's purely scheduled for a neat AM/PM crew change, seats on the NWI/EXT sector are often available for less than £20 each way.

      The APU exhaust outlet on the max has been reduced and has new engines chevrons and slight increase in size, that's the most noticeable feature on the MAX. On the clip it is clearly just a 737 BBJ. Look out for norwegian 737's max, they've had 2 delivered already.

      I know. I was expecting some vocal criticism high lighting it.
      It seems like a rip off to me. They've been charging it for years and haven't done much with it.
      It wasn't a criticism of your video, just something I think people need to know if they're considering flying from Norwich. Why they can't include it in the ticket price is beyond me.

  • @devon896

    You can see why Flybe lost so much money, running silly niche routes like this out of airports nobody else flies from, especially fuel hungry and expensive lease E195s which should have been on European sunshine routes making proper money.
