- Our dream here in Northern Portugal is to be totally off-grid and in todays episode, we take a step back from our ultimate dream, to take a big step forward. We connect our primary water source, to the mains water system so that although our off-grid sources are starting to run dry, we won't have to move off the farm this autumn while we wait for the rain to replenish them.

A day that began with difficulty but ended in triumph !!! How amazing you both are. It is So sweet to watch the two little buddies grow.
Water is such an amazing blessing, and sometimes we don’t even notice… I loved the water coming of the pipe.
Ouch! Poor John. First, a shoulder injury and now a nasty bruise. I'm glad there are no broken bones, though. Yall's boys going along together is absolutely adorable! How sweet when Crusoe sat down to scoot with Sawyer on the slope, and then Sawyer got up and started to try and walk it again. They are growing up so fast. Having videos of them growing up is priceless. Great job, guys, on the water! Great video, too, btw. I am looking forward to the next video. Your neighbors are really the kindest people. And the municipal water system is also an example of using community resources. Self-sufficiency is great, but community is also vital, as is being flexible. And you and your neighbors are just demonstrating all of that again and again.
I loved how Crusoe decided that if he could not walk Sawyer down the path, he would scootch with him. What a wonderful big brother.

Sawyer is walking so well and picks himself up with no complaints and goes on his way. It is wonderful to see your children and you living so much in nature so freely. You and Portugal are giving the boys the best childhood.

Its so cute watching Crusoe helping Sawyer, who's started walking so fast. Great that you were able to get the water sorted in time, no joke running out.👍❤
We have town water and large tanks. We have smaller tanks on every shed even the chicken house has a small tank on it. Water is so precious. We have a grey water system too. Our fruit trees and veggie beds are heavily mulched to make the water go as far as possible. Australian Summers can be very hot and dry too.Good luck

Tara instead of having that heavy contraption on your back for Sawyer, stick him a blanket on your back like they do in my home country, South Africa. Far lighter and more comfy, lol. Just had a thought, they probably do that in Zim as well, chances are you were carried around like that too.
Can’t believe how Sawyer has all of a sudden turned from a baby into a toddler, and a very cute one I might add, Crusoe is so sweet with his brother♥️

You blow my mind with how you have created and work your land. In our modern times, so many just don’t have the practical skills to be self sufficient. You two just nail it! From providing your own water, food and fuel you have life skills that are centuries old but with a modern twist. You have such talent and knowledge of so many aspects of living off grid, I reckon in years to come you could run self sufficiency courses Tara with food preservation, cooking, vegetable and plant growing and John with everything else he does so well. You are just awesome.😊

Old laundry basins make amazing outdoor vegetable washing stations! It would be especially nice with that attached washboard to set them on. Just have it drain to a tree or garden.
Love to see the relationship evolution between the two brothers! So, so cute! The way they look at eachother, they hold hands, Crusoe gently waiting for Sawyer tho go down the path, then decide to join him "walking in his behind".... That bruise reminds me of when I slipped and fell on mud back in January. Thought I’d badly sprained my ankle until the bruise became quite horrendous! Turned out I’d broken my ankle in two places, had to have metal pins in to put it right and it’s still a little sore 9 months later! So please take care, these things happen in the blink of an eye and how awful it would be for you all if one of you was out of action for a good few weeks.
But on a happier note - those boys, it actually brought a tear to my eye watching them together, Crusoe being so patient and kind to Sayer. What an adorable pair they are, in fact what a wonderful family. It’s a privilege to be allowed to follow your journey with all the trials and tribulations along the way. This has been one of my favorite episodes! Such fun watching Sawyer increase his world and becoming so confident. I'm sure the boys will have squabbles as most siblings do, but they will also be buddies. I just love watching little Crusoe taking things seriously and making as much physical effort as he can helping in every task mom or dad is in He is so cute. He’s going to be a great young man with lots of early gained skills one especially being a supportive team member and sometimes just walking off taking the lead to do whatever he wants to do. The two boys walking side by side is just too precious .!!! A suggestion for the large vessel would be to borrow it a short distance down in the ground near your pool and have something containing a small amount of water near your larger pool to wash your feet off before entering pool!

I think one of my best experiences all week is seeing Sawyer's expression when he looks up at you or John. It's part delight, part anticipation and part satisfaction with life. (I missed the teething thing). Caruso is becoming such a fabulous little man following behind his dad.

We don’t have the luxury of a well or borehole. Our fantastic architect knew we wanted to harvest rainwater so designed a brilliant solution that is built into the fabric of our house and completely invisible (initially) we may add tanks further down the line and transfer water using some intelligent logic, but that is a future project. Love the abilities that John has. Oh if I was younger!

I'm always blown away by your innovative ways of doing things needed for the farm. From water hookups to electricity, John can figure out anything that needs to be done and Tara brings him coffee and snacks too when needed. You make a great team and will carry on till it's all completed and hopefully without bruises and broken bones. The last scene of two brothers stole the show. Sawyer is balancing so well. No wonder those who inherited this farm did not want it. YAY house water won't be a problem now.. even though it's a painful adjustment to being off off-grid. The boys look SO adorable together. Crusoe has the most incredible patiemce with Sawyer. Makes my heart happy. OH GOODNESS John!!! What a massive hematoma! Put some Arnica cream on it. It's all natural and will help with the pain, as well as make the bruise fade.

@@TheNewbys Yes, like Tammara says, Arnica Montana is great for bruising and pain. Many athletes use this product in order to heal quickly from their injuries.

Guys, you are 2 hero parents. We also have kids, but I can’t do repairs around the house or putting something in place with our little kids near me. Gardening with them? Yes. My mom sends her love as well. She was all oh! Ah! watching your kids walking around on the steps. You are doing it great!

Remember if you’re using municipal water that any chemicals used absorbs into your skin. If you’re using this for shower and baths, get a filtration system.
It’s always good to have water from the main as a back up when the wells go dry. You both make a wonderful team. ❤❤❤

@@TheNewbys I remember when we moved to our mini farm 5 years ago we had 1 water tank. Must say we never ran out of water but with Earth weather changing especially in Australia we decided to get another 3 tank. The old one got disconnected because it was very old fibreglass good for the garden gravity fed. Now we have 3 new clean tank and brand new colorbond roof some filters on and we are set for life. So it is very important for you because you have extra two addition who loves playing with water. Must say when we have no rain for a while I am doing the shower quick rinse😊 other time I spurgle. I drink for your health from my tank water. Cheers.🦘🐨

Both of mine will be off to school this year. As hard as it was at that age I am thankful I savored it and stayed in the moment as much as I could. They are beautiful children who seem so dang happy.
I watched a fellow build huge, two tanks for his house in Arizona. Whenever it rained, it took the water off his house, barn and shed. He rigged it so that the grey water fed his trees and plants. I believe his channel is Handeeman. 😊
