  • We are sharing our terrifying experience as wildfires in Portugal came dangerously close to our property, threatening to engulf everything. Watch as we recount the intense moments when the flames crept closer, nearly crossing the border onto our land. We’ll show you footage of the fires, explain how we prepared to protect our home, and reflect on the fear and uncertainty we faced. It was a close call, and this experience really opened our eyes to the devastating power of nature. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been affected by this incident.

We will come back stronger! Be strong 💪 we haven’t had these big fires for the past 7 years. Even with all the measures, laws and programs (land clearing measures, forest segmentation, etc) it is impossible to control fire starter people that should be jailed for life for these actions and extreme weather (drought and extreme wind). But we will prevail, we always do. That is the Portuguese way, never ever give up. And you my friends, are already Portuguese. We love that you are here with us.

      God bless you ❤❤❤❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I live in Australia, so you have heard of the devastation of fires. Get in touch with your local brigade & they can help you fire safe your property. On that subject, if you are ever in danger you must leave. Your lives are far more important than your possessions. Glad you are safe.

As an Australian I experienced bushfires as close as 500m from my property. A man cannot outrun a fire ascending a ravine!! The lesson from my experience of fires there was that controlling the amount of fuel around your property is crucial. Burnoffs in milder weather and clearing of undergrowth is the way to go. In Australia there are well prepared Bushfire Brigades that are organised and swing into action when needed. Well done on your contribution. In one of your shots you can see the leaves now falling on the burnt areas... creating the next layer of fuel for the next heatwave and tinder dry emergency. I also noticed that you have a lot of easily burning trees around like Mimosa (which in Australia we call Wattle) and eucalypts. 🥴🤗

Our hearts go out to all those affected. We lived through the Black Saturday fires in Australia in 2009 and our house was also spared, though we could see flames nearby before the wind changed direction. It is truly terrifying and incredibly stressful, so we understand something of what you have been going through.

Thank you for deciding to share this - we all hear about wildfires, and see them on the news, but it’s a remote thing and people living far away don’t get that true sense of what is taking place. An inside look (so to speak) is rare because people don’t have the time, the skills, the equipment, the presence of mind, the platform (basically all the things) to film what they’re experiencing and share it with the world. Seeing the human element, the human involvement is important. It stops it being a remote/virtual item of news and becomes human news. It makes people feel and think. And hopefully act.
When I saw on the Newbys’ IG about Diogo, my heart broke. Thank you for your input into this too.
And I am so very glad that you were spared. It’s brilliant that the community came together but it sounds like the government were caught on the back foot this time, perhaps because it had been so long since the last fires in Northern Portugal like these. Blessings to you all xxx. (Also, get those Eucalyptuses down!)

Bushfires are the absolute worst thing.. they do not discriminate.
We face these problems almost yearly here in Oz and we rely so much on the amazing fire crews, mostly volunteers.
Our barrier on one side is a lake.
It is nerve shattering. The lessons you get are invaluable though. Keep your family jewels in a safe place ready to grab and go.
    You did everything right.
I’m so glad the flying leaves burned out before they dropped.
Have a plan, it might even be worth investing in a proper fire pump to get water from your river..
I’m sure you will discuss it over and over.
I’m so glad you are all safe,

Dear Scotters, it is so, so sad…
These were very dark days for the country.
I hope that you find a way to manage your lovely land and protect your dreams and hard work. The problem with fire is that sometimes it can’t be stoped, so the big chalenge for you is to really learn how to live in your forest and work with it.
I sure you will find all the lessons in your Junta de Freguesia e Câmara Municipal.
    Lots of love from Lisboa

I was thinking of your family when I saw the Portugal wild fires reports.
I am Australian so we know only too well how devastating they can be. I remember trying to lead my relatives horses down a road with fires on both sides. The fire coming sounded like a freight train coming and it flew across the tops of the trees. The fire-fighters are true heroes that put their lives in danger to protect other and their properties.
One day a few years back we lost 103 people to fires in one day. The area they were in got cut off. We call the event Black Saturday.
Always be diligent and remember to leave early enough because no property is worth dying for.
So glad your family is safe and you are definitely part of your Portuguese community fighting the fires along side your neighbours. Great respect to you both. My condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

All I can suggest is to check out how we plan in our bushfire season in Australia. It is very scary and you do need to have an emergency evacuation plan that everyone is aware of in your family because you just never know when a fire may occur. Pleased to hear you are safe. It's a huge deal cleaning up after the fact - so pace yourself and wear PPE.

I live in British Columbia,Canada. Forest fires are common here unfortunately. What you need to do before doing anymore building etc is make fire breaks around your property. Get rid of dead trees . Have a sprinkler system in place to water down your buildings and property.
Keep a list of what you want to take if you have to evacuate. Photos, mementos etc. and of course any medications that you may need.
Most importantly is the fire break around your property. You have so many trees that if the fires got close to you everything would go.
    Please be safe!

Living in Chile which also has terrifying fires every summer we understand how quickly scary a situation can be. I agree with the beginning of your video, you need to be better prepared. We have had to learn this as well and in the Spring we get our bags packed, review our plan, cut down trees, have water plans and hoses ready, escape routes etc for an evacuation within 10 minutes of the decision to leave the homestead. Also please buy some masks the heavy duty one that could save your lives. Breathing this smoke could seriously injure your lungs. It is a very scary situation which can quickly come out of control even with the helicopter ballets trying to throw 10,000 litres of water in strategic points. I am very sorry for everyone that has lost their home or a loved one. We are glad you are safe❤

I am grateful you live in a community that cares for one another, and through that collective determination, you were able to help fight those fires.
Thank you for sharing this vlog and showing us the devastation and loss that was caused by these fires. 🙏❤️🇨🇦

It's so sad to hear about the terrible losses the folk in your area have gone through.
I do know how horrible fighting fires is. I grew up on a sugar cane farm in Natal. I have been praying for you all since you posted last week that you were fighting fires. Your farm has a lot of water on it but please get yourselves a fire cart or two. They will always be at the ready, for times like these.
Well done you putting an IBC on the back of the truck. Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦

So many hugs to you both and your family and friends! Terrifying!!
Californian here who has been through this also.
One thing to consider - burned areas will slide after receiving some amount of rain.
These are called “debris flows” in California.
They can be huge walls of mud and rock with plant matter up to huge sized embedded.
Suggest you start prepping now for that since the burned areas are right up the hill from you.
Sorry, but better to know ahead of time.
So glad you all and your land are ok.
    Thanks for sharing this.

This is such a moving video …thank you for deciding to share your experiences. Our hearts go out to Diogo and your neighbours who lost so much. You both made an amazing contribution to stopping the fire crossing the road with your makeshift fire truck…it looked pretty dangerous and so very scary. Many years ago the hillside burned behind our house but thank goodness a small lane acted as a firebreak, and having our field ploughed each year gives some protection, but as Badger said cleaning the land around your property is so important. Let’s hope the government will do more to support the bombeiros, many of whom are volunteers in the first place. Wondering if they would come must have been so frightening. Beijinhos

Such tragedy & devastation! Have been thinking of all the people I follow all week. So glad you are all safe & so sorry for the loss of lives & livelihoods in Portugal. My thoughts & prayers to all lost in fires & also floods in Europe. Amazingly, we have had snow storms in South Africa this weekend (yes, South Africa!) People trapped on freeways the entire weekend & still awaiting the toll it has taken. Amazing help given from communities to help with food, blankets, essentials, where they could . What would we all do without our caring communities?

That’s very scary, & exhausting. I hope that you did get rain. As an Aussie I was so heartened to see your immediate response was to create a plan and think of all the things you could do then do them. Water down the bush, move the van, fill it with fuel, make sure there was a clear driving route. That is the perfect response in these uncontrollable and terrifying Fire situations. Please work on those, & encourage others in you community to create plans and organise for future possible scenarios. Your actions and your response to the threat more than likely saved your farm. I say this with love & compassion & blessings from Oz. ❤

I so understand the fear you went through. Where I live, every single summer, the fire season, we have no camp fires, evacuation alerts, evacuations where you need to leave now! I don't know if you've ever heard of Jasper Provincial Park but it was hit big time by fires this year. Two years ago we had to evacuate. We were put on alert at first but then we received notice to get out right away. We were gone for 2 weeks. We had horses, dogs, ducks, chickens, cats and a rabbit to move out as well. Was terrifying. And then the home we evacuated to were put on alert as well. I'm happy you're safe. (I live in BC, Canada)

I was about Wilfred's age, our barns caught fire due to old window panes and straw being kept in there. It still sends shivers down my spine and any whiff of smoke I'm paranoid! Remember screaming for my father who was trying to remove machinery whilst the roof was on fire and crumbling in! So happy you're all safe, something we never did but I believe it would have helped if we'd sat down and talked about it as a family as it was horrifying! Massive hugs to your brave children, who witnessed the potential of their beautiful home disappearing, BBC BadgerMan! Take it easy and get away for a day or two pleeeease!

These wild fires are becoming a large part of our collective global experience . And Portugal has been dealt a huge amount of them.
Badger was correct in saying that the land needs to be kept as clean as possible, in order to provide less fuel.
