Am I the only one who thinks this game should have been about the Nerd in different worlds, with different mechanics for each world? Like, AVGN enters "Assholevania", so the gameplay changes to a classic Castlevania gameplay (stiff movements, stairs, a whip-like weapon), then he enters some kind of Megaman world, the gameplay changes again (faster movement, shooting weapon, sliding). I mean... I alwayst though that if there was an AVGN game, it'd be like this. Dunno, my opinion...
That would work but it'd require some care. Change the mechanics too much and it'd confuse the crap out of the players. It can be done right though, and would be a good idea as long as the devs know what they're doing.
That wouldn't work: if you change the mechanics in each world, then basically each one of them would be a different game, so you wouldn't have a platform game, you'd have a collection of minigames. The basic gameplay mechanics have to remain the same, you can only do minor changes, and that's what they did: you have 4 different selectable characters, some flying sections, and some slightly different hazards in each world, such as the stairs in Assholevania and the tunnelvision in Boo! Haunted House. It's fine the way it is, it wasn't created as a groundbreaking platformer, but as a homage to the AVGN series. It could have been done better, but I don't think yours is a good idea.

Either way my point is that if Assholevania is just a level from Castlevania, Future Fuckballs is a level from SF2010, and so on, what's the point of having a single game? You have to have a single solid gameplay, then if things change a bit here and there, or the player has control over it, such as changing characters, it's ok. I was thinking a better alternative would have been having different weapons based on the games! The game only features 3 power-ups and 4 characters, well let's have only 1 character with a bunch of different weapons. Say the Nerd's basic weapon is a gun that shoots straight, then in Assholevania he finds the whip from Castlevania 4 that lets you attack in 8 directions. then there's Dr. Jekill's stick that does nothing, but is the only one able to kill bees. the rock from Friday the 13th that goes in an arch, and so on.
It really bugs me when someone says they hate the AVGN or that they hates James. He's just a dude that loves to make movies and make people laugh and enjoy themselves. The Nerd is a character that he assumes when he makes the videos and is in no way related to james at all. He's just a really nice, genuine dude and it irks me when people judge him without knowing a lick of who he really is.

Thomas Jenkins For fuck's sake. People like Jared and James aren't just TH-camrs! They're real people with real feelings and goals that are taking time out of their daily lives to entertain people. It's hard to not love James Rolfe when he's such a genuine dude. He grew up loving the Universal monster movies and Kaiju films of old. He was inspired to make his own movies. He studied the art of film as he got older, which is when he discovered TH-cam. As a sort of a joke he took on the role of this character, the Angry Nintendo Nerd (which later became the Angry Video Game Nerd) because at the time, them there video games were all the rage. He transferred a lot of his film making skills from their original medium to this new, unique one and ended up rather enjoying himself. He put a couple videos and suddenly he was famous. Solely because the videos were so popular did he continue to make more of them; to entertain more people, to make more people laugh and enjoy themselves selflessly. He became famous on accident and acts nothing like his vulgar character. If you hate James, there's something incredibly wrong with you.

I think everyone is forgetting: 1. It's his opinion. If he thought it diserved a 5/10, it's his choice. If you don't agree, don't complain. Just say your opinion. 2. His criticisms are almost all fair, and true. 3. Remember, ratings aren't saying how technically good the game is. The person reviewing is giving a rating based off of their experiences. If they had a negative experience, then yes, it will get a worse rating. Companies like IGN have to give a technical rating, based off of multiple people's experiences. I personally like reviewers like PBG and Projared, because they aren't a company. So they can just say directly what *they* did or didn't like. 4. The review isn't completely negative. Remember that. 5/10 is basically eh, meaning that he didn't like it, but he didn't dislike it. 5. Just because their opinion is different, doesn't mean they are jealous of AVGN, or anything like that. This doesn't reflect his opinions on the AVGN. Just the game.
I think a lot of people assume that 7 or 8 is average thanks to idiotic game reviewing companies that seldom go below 6 in order to please video game companies while trying to give a "fair" review.

I though the whole point of the game was to have unfair deaths which is a running theme in the Nerd Videos. The infinity lives and generous check points are there to compliment that. You know like the whole game is a "That's Bullshit" Simulator.

***** You are missing the point. The Mega Man legacy collection is just a re-release of six existing NES titles. It's not new content, and the original titles sold for $40 apiece when new. It's a collection of old games--hell, the Anniversary collection released over a decade ago has the first EIGHT titles AND a few bonus games, and I bought my PS2 copy for $15 in 2004.(and if you honestly think that the first six games are 25+ hours of gameplay, you are a VERY slow Mega Man player.) AVGN Adventures is a brand new title, newly designed for a contemporary, first-time release. It's not some crappy phone game app. It's a full on game that's never been seen before, so I think the creators asking 10 bucks for it is pretty fair. That's how supply, demand, and creative content work, bud. Maybe in 25-30 years, an entire collection AVGN Adventure games will be re-released together for a steal.

this was an incredibly fair and well thought review. I don't understand why people are upset at jared for it - it was warranted, any reviewer shoulda reviewed this. AVGN gets his own game, after shitting on so many others (some of which i loved) it's his turn! Jared at least pointed out all the good points to it as well, such as the music.
I wasn't expecting "AAA" material, but I was admittedly surprised by how refined everything looked and felt. I loved the music and the visuals are great.
As an AVGN fan, I can still see why Jared doesn't like this game. Although it's supposed to be off a shitty game, things such as enemies and bosses with same movements but different looks is not a good idea for a game. And it still lacks a lot of things that a shitty game would have, such as random crashing, terrible music, and poor controls. Also, I think James released Lester the Unlikely 5, his fans would still buy it
Well, that's the thing. It's a representation of shitty game DESIGN, the design the Nerd complained about, not everything detrimental to a player's experience. If the game crashed, had awful controls or whatever, people would've asked for a refund. As a result, the game would've accrued a bad rep because of internet articles, and would've been removed from Steam. On a slight tangent, the "shitty games" design wasn't used to its fullest extent. Imagine if there were 50 character passwords, dying once and going back the beginning of the game unless you hold left and push start (like in Milon's Secret Castle), having a weapon that does nothing or anything similar. These are things that don't redound to a player's aggravation, nearly as much as the stuff you mentioned. On another tangent, this game is not worth beating more than once, maybe not even once. The ending is so fucking bad, it's.... UGGHH.

The ending of a game is supposed to be a reward for finishing it, not a reason to say "why the fuck did I just waste my time cursing at the computer screen?" If they wanted to use more aspects of shitty game in Adventures, then they should've done of the things I've mentioned above. This crappy ending is just not fair.

I've also criticized the game way more than I've praised it and I'm downright AGAINST the whole "crappy design because satire" bullshit. I NEVER said the design is good, just what it's supposed to reperesent. It's just a cop-out for a lack of ideas and indolence.. I still do think it's a really good game, just not worth the asking price, like really, it's fucking insane.

i've been a fan of AVGN since his debut in 2004, me and my friends will often watch a few episodes whenever we meet up, but i HATE games that are designed to be frustrating, i detest "i wanna be the guy" and those fake mario games well known for stupid deaths and game overs, when i saw him "review" this game i knew i would hate it so i didn't buy it. sooooooo i don't fall in that category of "if you're a fan you buy all of his merch"
Dude, this game is nowhere near the level of I Wanna Be the Guy. Not even close. Give it a try, but don't pay full price for it, I implore you. It's good, but don't expect anything special.

I finished it. Fun fact: The inspiration for the game (the hard flash game Kayin played) was still in beta... and when it was finished, THE GUY WAS THE FINAL BOSS.

Wow, Jared was the first reviewer I've seen that dislikes this game. He points out "bad" things about the game like the skulls and unpredictability to die yet AVGN hates those things too. But thats the point of the game. Even James liked this game because of the references and how faithful it is to the Nerd. Most of his fans are happy to play this game and have tons of fun with it too because it feels like they are playing a game with all the bad and good stuff the Nerd hates and likes in games that he references in all of his videos. Why the hate is on that reason bothers me. I like ProJared but this was an off put review. Its supposed to be challenging but thats what we expect going in and its fun because of that. I heard nothing but good about it till Jared reviewed it and hated things that are good about the game.
Most AVGN fans are too far up James' ass to know that the game isn't that good. Don't knock Jared for being honest and not fanboying out like all these other people.
Some people are saying that ProJared is jealous but I believe this was an honest review and though I'm a HUGE AVGN fan and enjoyed the game, I agree about the parts he dislikes. He could easily give a 10/10 to this game to gain a shit ton of thumbs up (like some other youtubers) but that would make him an hypocrite. With this review I respect him even more now because he had the balls to say his opinion without giving a shit about the dislikes. Actually, a lot of people aren't complaining about the fact that ProJared is jealous, but the fact that ProJared is literally crapping on a game made by ScrewAttack, a.k.a. the same team that FIRED him a while back. It can be taken wrong in many ways. People really need to understand the actual context here. ProJared got *fired* from the ScrewAttack team, for whatever reason. So in the end, this review comes out as pure revenge for ditching him out. Yes, the game can be awful, problematic, boring and such... but the problem is that ProJared SHOULDN'T have touched the game, like "staying away from it". Right now this review can be interpreted as such: "Hey Craig, Chad, Nick, Ben, Sam, Sean and James! You fired me from your team? Well, F*** you, I'm giving YOUR game a bad score. You can't simply say "Hey I'm gonna help develop Half Life 3 I make videos on youtube". Game development takes years of experience, these reviews are meant to be informative, rather than a direct insult at the company behind it.
Perry Martin Being a critic of video games doesn't mean you have any skill in making video games. They are two entirely different skill sets. It's sorta like how being a sports commentator doesn't mean you are qualified to play on a professional team. I've been a fan of the AVGN and James Rolfe's other stuff for years but this game just pissed me off and featured most of the things that usually piss him off in his reviews. Maybe that was the point but it still pissed me off.
So you're making a video game, right, and the joke is that the game sucks, right, because it's based on a guy whose entire shtick is his hyperbolic mental breakdowns over old games, right, so you put all the stuff in the game that would make him insane, and instead of making a 5 minute long game and maybe releasing it for 2 bucks... You go through the effort of programming a fairly long game, deliberately programming it to be frustrating, you fill it with jokes that are only jokes insofar as they are references to poop jokes that the eponymous protagonist of this game makes, and charge 15 dollars for it because you know his infamously rabid fanbase will eat it up. And, what, we're supposed to be proud of these people because they so carefully captured the essence of a shitty video game? You want to play a shitty video game, just go get a rom of something that AVGN reviewed, put it in, find a TH-cam video somebody put together of a "Best Of AVGN" reel and have that playing in the background. There. You got the AVGNA experience for free and you ain't even had to go insult nobody on goddamn TH-cam like the personal honor of your immensely successful and influential internet idol was somehow at stake.
You should redo this review towards the remasterd collection of this game and its "sequals". Its an all in one game cartridge or downloadable digital. Added/changed a decent amount of stuff. But it still wasn't as fun to play either, lol.
I enjoy AVGN but let's be honest, the independent scene is flooded with updated "homages" to popular 8-bit platformers, Megaman, Castlevania and the like have been done to death. 3 or 4 years ago a game like this would have stood out a bit more but now its just another Shovel Knight on the pile.
They're making a new one. Here's to hoping the developers took a few classes in creative, interesting level design. And humor. That definitely wouldn't hurt. The first one struck me as reminiscent of Nintendo in recent years--just a lot of "Hey, remember this from the show? That was awesome, right?" references without bringing anything new.
Basically this game isn't worth your time if you're not a fan of AVGN (or James Wolfe). The whole retro difficulty gimmick isn't new anymore (with games like I Wanna be the guy, Super meat boy, Spelunky, etc) so aside from its theme it's really just another 2D platformer that is flooding the market. But, as a fan of the AVGN I got sucked in and tried it. At 50% off I don't think a single penny was wasted, and I really enjoyed it. The other characters aren't mandatory for any level because they're hidden, it would be really a stupid move. And they aren't just different skins, so there's that. And while not anywhere as addicting as, say, Super Meat Boy, it's still good enough to keep me playing it to complete the different difficulty setting. It's a gigantic fan service, but for what it is it's pretty solid. I'd give it a 6/10 for a fan of the genre (which means you can let it pass, but it WILL entertain you), and less if you aren't. I, for one, regret nothing.
for those who say projared doesn't get it because this game was purposely made to be bad, they are the ones that are not getting it. This is a fan-service game, if you do not know AVGN jokes or the lore, you would never understand this game. Why set such a low standard when you could actually make the game to be good, winning over the fans and the general public of gamers?

Today Steam had a sale on this game. So I bought it, and it's fun, has a lot of references, and it shows it tries to be a bad game (that's the plot after all). That's it, really. All the unfairness and instant deaths come from imitating the games that AVGN has reviewed or mentioned (but watered down to make the game playable).

It's definitely an okay game. Not worth $15, but a good game to at least try once. The Death blocks drove me nuts though. It was the one part of the game I wanted to be able to select a way to turn off.
Jared's review is slighty outdated. they now allow Keyboard control bindings and volume/sound options. BUT my one complaint i really hate is that everytime i start the game, i have to bind my keys again for the controls. for some reason it doesn't save my key bindings when i turn off the game. btw the final boss with a keyboard was a nightmare, but i somehow beat him
Normally we get a synopsis walkthrough and jokes. What happened? This review felt too thin. You could have done a great review instead of a mediocre one, because you've got jokes.

Obviously you can't go fully biased, but opinion has to come into everything - especially if people are relying on you for whether or not they should purchase something. Heck, I watch a ton of gaming and music reviewers and most of the time, their reviews are what make me go for and avoid certain franchises and games. It's not a huge dig, just seems a little odd. I think rating systems can get a little lost sometimes, I rate out of four and count zero as on of the five numbers available which works better. 5/10 is technically average.

at first i was tempted to be a bit annoyed at how low he rated the game, cause honestly? its fun to play. But i realised most of his gripes kind of mirrored my own. It was annoying to struggle on a puzzle, feel rewarded for finally beating it, getting to another level and seeing...well very similar puzzles. It's be like megaman 2 with force beams every level, it'd ruin it.
Dude I sincerely disagree. I think you are misconstruing product placement with fan service. I have been an avid avgn fan for over 5 years now. That game has all the best references to his library of content. How can it be product placement if all of his content is free? You can buy merch and support his career if you want sure but you don't have to.
The problem with this game is you can't excuse it with 'it's supposed to be shitty' when it executes certain aspects so well. The soundtrack to this game is amazing and the controls are flawless so just from that alone, you can see the designers went for a truly amazing platformer with unforgiving difficulty. Would anyone else agree with me on that?
King Derp technically they fired him because he didnt have the heart to quit himself, so craig had to let him go because jared wasnt happy with screw attack, so they both agreed that it was best for jared to do his own thing, but they are still friends
So many Jared fans here that don't realize that, yes, he was FIRED from ScrewAttack. Call it laid off, call it let go; whatever the semantics, the guy was forced to leave the company under no choice of his own. He fully admitted he was fired. ScrewAttack fully admitted he was fired. Craig fully admitted he was fired. Hell, the news of his departure is still on the SA site, where the word "fired" and "let go" are clearly used. I don't know why you guys jump to his defense as Jared fans yet don't know his history, or at least refuse to acknowledge that history. Obviously he still has friends from SA, friends that didn't want to see him go. But him a Craig? You'd be a fool to think these guys on speaking terms, let alone friends. The relationship is no less strained than Craig and Handsome Tom. And this game was Craig's baby. There's a clear bias, whether your agree with him about the game or not. As someone who makes his living off TH-cam, it's important for both the audience to understand the history behind this review and its bias it carries. And honestly, he should never had reviewed it. It's just common sense.

I'm a die-hard fan of AVGN and I'm really thankful for this video. I'm yet to buy the game (Because I can't bloody afford it!) but as you can imagine I've read up a lot about it and DO want to get it. I don't see a whole lot of point for non-AVGN fans though. I like it as a fan piece, but I have to admit, I wanted a NEW AVGN adventure, something completely different, like a brand new episode in replayable game format. I resent the cameo's of other generic gaming personalities very strongly, but I guess that was going to happen with Screwattack at the helm of it all. I'll be honest ProJared, this is the first video I've ever seen from you and at first I thought you were merely trying to be contrarian, and to anyone else watching this video for the firtst time I suggest you wait until halfway through before judging, I feel that the criticism is immensely constructive, and really does draw attention to what is clearly appealing about this game, and what is undeniably flawed about it. 15$ for this kind of game is too much. Mind you though, all major release games are like, 6 times too much, so I guess even 15$ is a godsend. This comment may be two years late, but thanks anyway, buddy!
There's no bitterness. Just because there's a negative review doesn't mean someone has some sort of grudge against another person. It just means that the product was poor.
It is really too expensive. Let's be honest : without the Nerd, the game would've lost at least half its value. It's simply a platformer like we've seen in Flash Games websites, between this and Give Up Robot 2, I would've been more inclined to pay 5$ for the latter. And no one says an indie game has to be below X price, La-Mulana is sold at 15$, it was once a freeware in 2006, and its remake is well worth the money. AVGNA is maybe self-aware, that doesn't forgive him for emulating bad l-d.
I get that the game was supposed to be difficult, but those death blocks just seemed really lazy and forced to make you think the game is hard. Didn't have trouble getting past most of them took some trial and error which I like in games, can't be perfect first go. But man did those things just make the game feel like you were going at a snails pace Move > Avoid Deathblock > Move an inch >Avoid Deathblock > Move another inch >Avoid Deathblock over and over again.

It does not matter that it was early acess, even most early access games have less bugs than that. Am I the only one who thinks this game should have been about the Nerd in different worlds, with different mechanics for each world? Like, AVGN enters "Assholevania", so the gameplay changes to a classic Castlevania gameplay (stiff movements, stairs, a whip-like weapon), then he enters some kind of Megaman world, the gameplay changes again (faster movement, shooting weapon, sliding).
I mean... I alwayst though that if there was an AVGN game, it'd be like this. Dunno, my opinion...
That would work but it'd require some care. Change the mechanics too much and it'd confuse the crap out of the players. It can be done right though, and would be a good idea as long as the devs know what they're doing.
That wouldn't work: if you change the mechanics in each world, then basically each one of them would be a different game, so you wouldn't have a platform game, you'd have a collection of minigames. The basic gameplay mechanics have to remain the same, you can only do minor changes, and that's what they did: you have 4 different selectable characters, some flying sections, and some slightly different hazards in each world, such as the stairs in Assholevania and the tunnelvision in Boo! Haunted House. It's fine the way it is, it wasn't created as a groundbreaking platformer, but as a homage to the AVGN series. It could have been done better, but I don't think yours is a good idea.

Either way my point is that if Assholevania is just a level from Castlevania, Future Fuckballs is a level from SF2010, and so on, what's the point of having a single game? You have to have a single solid gameplay, then if things change a bit here and there, or the player has control over it, such as changing characters, it's ok. I was thinking a better alternative would have been having different weapons based on the games! The game only features 3 power-ups and 4 characters, well let's have only 1 character with a bunch of different weapons. Say the Nerd's basic weapon is a gun that shoots straight, then in Assholevania he finds the whip from Castlevania 4 that lets you attack in 8 directions. then there's Dr. Jekill's stick that does nothing, but is the only one able to kill bees. the rock from Friday the 13th that goes in an arch, and so on.

It's hard to not love James Rolfe when he's such a genuine dude.
He grew up loving the Universal monster movies and Kaiju films of old. He was inspired to make his own movies.
He studied the art of film as he got older, which is when he discovered TH-cam.
As a sort of a joke he took on the role of this character, the Angry Nintendo Nerd (which later became the Angry Video Game Nerd) because at the time, them there video games were all the rage.
He transferred a lot of his film making skills from their original medium to this new, unique one and ended up rather enjoying himself.
He put a couple videos and suddenly he was famous.
Solely because the videos were so popular did he continue to make more of them; to entertain more people, to make more people laugh and enjoy themselves selflessly.
He became famous on accident and acts nothing like his vulgar character.

I think everyone is forgetting:
1. It's his opinion. If he thought it diserved a 5/10, it's his choice. If you don't agree, don't complain. Just say your opinion.
2. His criticisms are almost all fair, and true.
3. Remember, ratings aren't saying how technically good the game is. The person reviewing is giving a rating based off of their experiences. If they had a negative experience, then yes, it will get a worse rating. Companies like IGN have to give a technical rating, based off of multiple people's experiences. I personally like reviewers like PBG and Projared, because they aren't a company. So they can just say directly what *they* did or didn't like.
4. The review isn't completely negative. Remember that. 5/10 is basically eh, meaning that he didn't like it, but he didn't dislike it.
5. Just because their opinion is different, doesn't mean they are jealous of AVGN, or anything like that. This doesn't reflect his opinions on the AVGN. Just the game.
I think a lot of people assume that 7 or 8 is average thanks to idiotic game reviewing companies that seldom go below 6 in order to please video game companies while trying to give a "fair" review.

It's a collection of old games--hell, the Anniversary collection released over a decade ago has the first EIGHT titles AND a few bonus games, and I bought my PS2 copy for $15 in 2004.(and if you honestly think that the first six games are 25+ hours of gameplay, you are a VERY slow Mega Man player.)
AVGN Adventures is a brand new title, newly designed for a contemporary, first-time release. It's not some crappy phone game app. It's a full on game that's never been seen before, so I think the creators asking 10 bucks for it is pretty fair. That's how supply, demand, and creative content work, bud. Maybe in 25-30 years, an entire collection AVGN Adventure games will be re-released together for a steal.

this was an incredibly fair and well thought review. I don't understand why people are upset at jared for it - it was warranted, any reviewer shoulda reviewed this. AVGN gets his own game, after shitting on so many others (some of which i loved) it's his turn! Jared at least pointed out all the good points to it as well, such as the music.

I really enjoyed the game, I had a good laugh and it had a good 16 bit feel to it.
However it was a bit hard, but i really enjoyed playing it.
As an AVGN fan, I can still see why Jared doesn't like this game. Although it's supposed to be off a shitty game, things such as enemies and bosses with same movements but different looks is not a good idea for a game. And it still lacks a lot of things that a shitty game would have, such as random crashing, terrible music, and poor controls.

Well, that's the thing. It's a representation of shitty game DESIGN, the design the Nerd complained about, not everything detrimental to a player's experience. If the game crashed, had awful controls or whatever, people would've asked for a refund. As a result, the game would've accrued a bad rep because of internet articles, and would've been removed from Steam. On a slight tangent, the "shitty games" design wasn't used to its fullest extent. Imagine if there were 50 character passwords, dying once and going back the beginning of the game unless you hold left and push start (like in Milon's Secret Castle), having a weapon that does nothing or anything similar. These are things that don't redound to a player's aggravation, nearly as much as the stuff you mentioned. On another tangent, this game is not worth beating more than once, maybe not even once. The ending is so fucking bad, it's.... UGGHH.
So, if the ending is bad, do we blame the designers for lack of effort and creativity, or do we say "Oh, he wanted it to be like a bad NES game"

Wow, Jared was the first reviewer I've seen that dislikes this game. He points out "bad" things about the game like the skulls and unpredictability to die yet AVGN hates those things too. But thats the point of the game. Even James liked this game because of the references and how faithful it is to the Nerd. Most of his fans are happy to play this game and have tons of fun with it too because it feels like they are playing a game with all the bad and good stuff the Nerd hates and likes in games that he references in all of his videos. Why the hate is on that reason bothers me. I like ProJared but this was an off put review. Its supposed to be challenging but thats what we expect going in and its fun because of that. I heard nothing but good about it till Jared reviewed it and hated things that are good about the game.

Actually, a lot of people aren't complaining about the fact that ProJared is jealous, but the fact that ProJared is literally crapping on a game made by ScrewAttack, a.k.a. the same team that FIRED him a while back. It can be taken wrong in many ways.
People really need to understand the actual context here. ProJared got *fired* from the ScrewAttack team, for whatever reason. So in the end, this review comes out as pure revenge for ditching him out. Yes, the game can be awful, problematic, boring and such... but the problem is that ProJared SHOULDN'T have touched the game, like "staying away from it".

I enjoy AVGN but let's be honest, the independent scene is flooded with updated "homages" to popular 8-bit platformers, Megaman, Castlevania and the like have been done to death. 3 or 4 years ago a game like this would have stood out a bit more but now its just another Shovel Knight on the pile.
They're making a new one. Here's to hoping the developers took a few classes in creative, interesting level design. And humor. That definitely wouldn't hurt. The first one struck me as reminiscent of Nintendo in recent years--just a lot of "Hey, remember this from the show? That was awesome, right?" references without bringing anything new.

Basically this game isn't worth your time if you're not a fan of AVGN (or James Wolfe). The whole retro difficulty gimmick isn't new anymore (with games like I Wanna be the guy, Super meat boy, Spelunky, etc) so aside from its theme it's really just another 2D platformer that is flooding the market.
But, as a fan of the AVGN I got sucked in and tried it. At 50% off I don't think a single penny was wasted, and I really enjoyed it. The other characters aren't mandatory for any level because they're hidden, it would be really a stupid move. And they aren't just different skins, so there's that. And while not anywhere as addicting as, say, Super Meat Boy, it's still good enough to keep me playing it to complete the different difficulty setting.
It's a gigantic fan service, but for what it is it's pretty solid. I'd give it a 6/10 for a fan of the genre (which means you can let it pass, but it WILL entertain you), and less if you aren't. I, for one, regret nothing.
for those who say projared doesn't get it because this game was purposely made to be bad, they are the ones that are not getting it. This is a fan-service game, if you do not know AVGN jokes or the lore, you would never understand this game. Why set such a low standard when you could actually make the game to be good, winning over the fans and the general public of gamers?
I doubt you'll answer this Jared but I was wondering: Was this game in development when you were still at screwattack and if so did the game change since from when you saw it and if not do you think you could've helped improve it?
Today Steam had a sale on this game. So I bought it, and it's fun, has a lot of references, and it shows it tries to be a bad game (that's the plot after all). That's it, really. All the unfairness and instant deaths come from imitating the games that AVGN has reviewed or mentioned (but watered down to make the game playable).
The flaws with the game are the same flaws that the nerd complained about ... So I guess the goal of this game was achieved ?

I disagree with Joe's cameo not making sense. Joe exists in the same universe as the Nostalgia Critic, which means he exists in the same universe as The Nerd.

It's definitely an okay game. Not worth $15, but a good game to at least try once. The Death blocks drove me nuts though. It was the one part of the game I wanted to be able to select a way to turn off.
Jared's review is slighty outdated. they now allow Keyboard control bindings and volume/sound options.
BUT
my one complaint i really hate is that everytime i start the game, i have to bind my keys again for the controls. for some reason it doesn't save my key bindings when i turn off the game.
btw the final boss with a keyboard was a nightmare, but i somehow beat him
Normally we get a synopsis walkthrough and jokes. What happened? This review felt too thin. You could have done a great review instead of a mediocre one, because you've got jokes.

Shmandalf Except it surely should? Obviously you can't go fully biased, but opinion has to come into everything - especially if people are relying on you for whether or not they should purchase something. Heck, I watch a ton of gaming and music reviewers and most of the time, their reviews are what make me go for and avoid certain franchises and games.
It's not a huge dig, just seems a little odd. I think rating systems can get a little lost sometimes, I rate out of four and count zero as on of the five numbers available which works better. 5/10 is technically average.

at first i was tempted to be a bit annoyed at how low he rated the game, cause honestly? its fun to play. But i realised most of his gripes kind of mirrored my own. It was annoying to struggle on a puzzle, feel rewarded for finally beating it, getting to another level and seeing...well very similar puzzles. It's be like megaman 2 with force beams every level, it'd ruin it.

Dude I sincerely disagree. I think you are misconstruing product placement with fan service. I have been an avid avgn fan for over 5 years now. That game has all the best references to his library of content. How can it be product placement if all of his content is free? You can buy merch and support his career if you want sure but you don't have to.

The problem with this game is you can't excuse it with 'it's supposed to be shitty' when it executes certain aspects so well. The soundtrack to this game is amazing and the controls are flawless so just from that alone, you can see the designers went for a truly amazing platformer with unforgiving difficulty. Would anyone else agree with me on that?

So many Jared fans here that don't realize that, yes, he was FIRED from ScrewAttack. Call it laid off, call it let go; whatever the semantics, the guy was forced to leave the company under no choice of his own. He fully admitted he was fired. ScrewAttack fully admitted he was fired. Craig fully admitted he was fired. Hell, the news of his departure is still on the SA site, where the word "fired" and "let go" are clearly used. I don't know why you guys jump to his defense as Jared fans yet don't know his history, or at least refuse to acknowledge that history.
Obviously he still has friends from SA, friends that didn't want to see him go. But him a Craig? You'd be a fool to think these guys on speaking terms, let alone friends. The relationship is no less strained than Craig and Handsome Tom. And this game was Craig's baby.
There's a clear bias, whether your agree with him about the game or not. As someone who makes his living off TH-cam, it's important for both the audience to understand the history behind this review and its bias it carries. And honestly, he should never had reviewed it. It's just common sense.
This is what I posted as comments in there and got flamed to a crisp: his review looks and sounds like payback, revenge, whatever. I mean, WHY did he even review the game in the first place? If you get fired from a job, you don't go shitting on your former colleagues and their work... ever...
I've heard that ScrewAttack thanked him for his review, but honestly, it wouldn't have been the best option for them to instead complain about Jared's review, just to avoid fuelling the flames.

I'm a die-hard fan of AVGN and I'm really thankful for this video. I'm yet to buy the game (Because I can't bloody afford it!) but as you can imagine I've read up a lot about it and DO want to get it. I don't see a whole lot of point for non-AVGN fans though.
I like it as a fan piece, but I have to admit, I wanted a NEW AVGN adventure, something completely different, like a brand new episode in replayable game format. I resent the cameo's of other generic gaming personalities very strongly, but I guess that was going to happen with Screwattack at the helm of it all.
I'll be honest ProJared, this is the first video I've ever seen from you and at first I thought you were merely trying to be contrarian, and to anyone else watching this video for the firtst time I suggest you wait until halfway through before judging, I feel that the criticism is immensely constructive, and really does draw attention to what is clearly appealing about this game, and what is undeniably flawed about it.
15$ for this kind of game is too much. Mind you though, all major release games are like, 6 times too much, so I guess even 15$ is a godsend.

I'm a huge fan of the AVGN, but I saw this shit pickle from a mile away.
It is really too expensive. Let's be honest : without the Nerd, the game would've lost at least half its value. It's simply a platformer like we've seen in Flash Games websites, between this and Give Up Robot 2, I would've been more inclined to pay 5$ for the latter.
And no one says an indie game has to be below X price, La-Mulana is sold at 15$, it was once a freeware in 2006, and its remake is well worth the money.
AVGNA is maybe self-aware, that doesn't forgive him for emulating bad l-d.

I get that the game was supposed to be difficult, but those death blocks just seemed really lazy and forced to make you think the game is hard. Didn't have trouble getting past most of them took some trial and error which I like in games, can't be perfect first go. But man did those things just make the game feel like you were going at a snails pace Move > Avoid Deathblock > Move an inch >Avoid Deathblock > Move another inch >Avoid Deathblock

My only problem with this game is the waiting. This game is like %90 waiting for shit to move or stop shooting fire so you can walk through.
