    You should not store your torque wrench with a high setting. You should put it back to the lowest torque setting it can do before putting it away. If you don't do that then it will become more and more inaccurate over time. There is a piece of metal inside it that bends as you increase the torque setting and storing it with that bent will take out the "spring" in the metal.

    When putting the axle in you,
    Insert axle
    Do up pinch bolts on the opposite side to the axle bolt.
    Tighten axle nut.
    Undo pinch bolt.
    Bounce forks a couple of times to align the forks so they don’t bind up and locate properly.
    Tighten both pinch bolts and your sweet.

    i'm not familiar with the wr250, but most bikes need bouncing the forks up and down before doing up the axle pinch bolts so they find their own place on the axle and not bind up.

    Same story with chains is the same with pads, you should swap your discs over too cos not only they old pads won't grip at all until you bed them in properly they also cause hotspots possibly messing up both your rotors. Also this is a simple and easy SM conversion most of the time you need a whole new braking setup at least on the front when you do an SM conversion

      @@RidingWithTom I was just testing you ;)
      I do up the pinch bolts on one side, tighten the nut and then do up the pinch bolts on the other side. I was thinking that the nut has to pull the forks against the bearings, otherwise there might be some slop?

    • @martins7194
      @martins7194 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nerb1 Doing up the pinch bolts on the "head-side" first is a good solution, but even better would be to get the actual Allen-key (or in-hex as it is sometimes referred to) to properly stop the axle from rotating, get the axle and spacers seated properly and THEN do up the pinch bolts.
      If there is some play left between the fork, spacers and bearings and somehow the fork does slide a bit, you're suddenly left with a loose axle nut. It doesn't look like the running torque of this nut is enough to prevent it from coming off if it does come loose.

    • @dazzazz5602
      @dazzazz5602 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you tighten the pinch bolts first it can leave a gap creating 'slop'? If you leave the pinch bolts loose and over-tighten it can cause the axle to bind in-between the forks? I guess this is why a torque wrench and Allen key is the best method, then tighten the pinch bolts last? Never actually done it so asking for technical advise.

    7:13 Pro tip from a Pro.
    Should hear it yourself, but basically. When changing a tire on a dirtbike, you must always change the rear sprocket along with it. Or at the same time. As it will cause excessive or too much wear on your chain.

  • @callumsteadman4320

    If your spacers are prone to falling out, you can use some grease to hold them in.

  • @Mogwizzle

    You can put a little grease on the spacers to keep them in place when working with the rear wheel.

  • @binguskhan1
    @binguskhan1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of grease try motor oil wiped on the front axle. It won't turn hard and sticky like grease. Also as mentioned below there's a few steps to make sure the forks are binding. You shouldn't need a mallet to get the axle in or out.

    Buddy of mine "solved" the sprocket problem by having two chains on his drz. Then he complicated matters by having the same chain length but different sprockets front and rear. After mixing up the chains a few times he realized that by having different lengths on the chains he could see the difference between the chains and keep the same front sprocket.

    Don't you run into the trouble of your side stand being too short/long when you swap wheels? I have a KLX that I have 2 sets of wheels for too but it's a major pain in the ass for me as I only have 1 set of brake rotors, 2 sprockets of different sizes, 2 chains of different lengths (clip type master link), and 2 side stands of different lengths. I'd love to streamline the process so I'd be more willing to swap between the two wheelsets.

    Hot tip, if you don't have a rubber mallet to hit the axel out, you can put the nut back on like 1/2 way threaded and smack that with a normal hammer:). (being careful of course.)

    • @mathew936
      @mathew936 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn't it put stress on the thread? I mean if you do it gently with a hammer still there'd be a little stress in the meshing threads, idk I'm not an expert just asking.

    • @lok14
      @lok14 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mathew936 With those high tensile threads and nuts it seems to be fine. I got shown that trick when i was a mechanic by and old boy. Used to use it all the time on ball joints and stuff. You can even do the nut up like 95% and give yourself a couple of mm of movement, sometimes it doesn't need much to come free. If you mash a thread doing it ill honestly send you a slab haha would be super impressed.

    A mechanical torque wrench should NEVER be stored on a torque value. You should always back it down to its lowest setting. At this point you might as well just tighten it with a regular wrench because that torque wrench is ruined. I'm a BMW master tech and have been turning wrenches for 16 years.
