It’s amazing how each state is different. My water meter and main shut off is inside my house just hanging out next to my water heater.

In Fredericksburg tx .. on new builds we usually install a customer shutoff afrer the meter or right before the house. Most Older homes usually don’t have one if it’s original water lines. So we usually advise the home owner to install one. Or the other scenario we come across is that they install a softener and the loop will have a shutoff valve inside the house by the softener unit. Most homes have water softener loops built into the slab or home when we build them.

@@user-ew2jd9us3m Before the new meter technology it was always a pain to have your meters inside (gas, water) because someone would literally have to come into your house to read them. Now with new technology, that doesn’t happen too much anymore. I’m also in New York, so having a water meter box outside can cause some interesting complications come the winter time.

Obviously an AAV for the kitchen sink drain...a no-no where I'm from but we sneak the national code-approved ones in when we can ( I don't have any problem with them as long as they're accessible thru an access panel or grate in the future ). Also , only one drain line roughed up thru the concrete on that kitchen drain eliminates the loop-vent idea. I also see no nail shields or BOCA plates - I HOPE those get added at some point or those PVC and PEX lines will find a nail or two from the drywallers or trim guys !! Work looks pretty neat - too many construction companies are always in a hurry to get things done - and their work shows it - these guys look like they actually used a tape measure and a level...good on them !!

In my jurisdiction, we can’t use a double Ty, it has to be a double “ fixture fitting “. There is a difference. Same thing for back to back toilets.
Also, their island sink/ venting is very different.

The A/C system is possibly a split mini system with different heads through the house? Maybe? That way you can control the temperature in different rooms, not have one central system for the whole house. If I ever built another house that is what I would do.

Great video, thanks! I’m in the Chicago area and I’ve never seen a home with no water shut-off in the home. My current ranch home has 2 meters (home water and outside water and a shut-off for each, 1/4 turn ball valves, 1” water line, copper) which are in the basement and currently most suburbs have remote readers that are picked up by a vehicle passing by. Chicago is huge and many systems are in use, depending on how old the building/home is. They still have lead pipe for many entrance lines, which they have started to replace.

Main shutoff valves aren't common in texas? That's wild to me. We put them in every new build in BC, Canada because it's virtually no additional cost but allows for emergency flood control or service control right from the mech room.

    • @realShadowKat
      @realShadowKat หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I don't think so, or at least the home owners don't know about it. When Texas froze (was it 2021 or so?) there was no heat coming into the homes, so there were a lot of stories and reports of flooded homes due to the bursting water lines. It was a bit of a shock to me because I (living in the northern US) would have de-pressurized the system before it got to that point by closing the main and opening some taps.

I'm with you lol fla and Texas are both covered under the southern standard code which in most cases everything is wet vented and it does not allow inch and a half VTRs but whatever I have seen the northern states actually make them telescope the vents to three inch to prevent freezing over and plugging the vent that's interesting but you know plumbing is plumbing basically across the country except for some different things that wouldn't take long to pick up on the most stringent code I've had to follow was the south fla building code as there's quite a few differences in that book than the southern standard code but that's only south of Palm Beach..

People are going to regret putting in those Chinese made mini splits. They have the quality of a window AC. Parts aren't universal like normal HVAC systems which means the part will be weeks out or no longer available many times. I hate working on them because they don't even make it easy to clean them. It's a complete teardown to get to the blower wheel. They use tricks to get the high seer rating, kinda like the Chinese 5 HP air compressors running on a 15 amp 120 volt outlet. In case you don't know, 5 HP would require 220 volts at a 20 plus amp draw. I'm not sure the efficiency of those motors.

I been plumbing in construction 37 years and got out of new home work in 03 so been some changes heres what I seen in So Ca very rescently was kinda shocked on homes iwalked nearby in the rough stage.
On the water I see the domestic pex running over to tie into the cpvc firesprinker lines not to feed either but to interconnect them maybe to keep sprinklines from getting stagnant nasty? the hot water had some kinda oddball circulating system not a simple return maybe it gets tempuring valves ?
also at the heat pump water heaters ( may have been combo for hvac dont quite remember ) It had 2 seperate stand pipes with traps ,Iguess one for primary a seperate for the secondary coming through the slab. pretty odd When I left new homes our company was still almost excusively copper we had around 6 differant projects going on at a time 25 homes or 50 mighta had some 100 home jobs in phases of 10 or20 homes tops but I never was on a Pex job , had some CPVC jobsin late 80s up to 95 Cpvc never caught ontoo much here

Do both roof drains go onto ground. I’ve never done them on residential but on commercial, drain goes to storm drain system, overflow goes to cow tongue on the side of the building.
I’d use a double fixture fitting or stacked tees for double lav. Poor service guy will never get that line unstopped.
I dislike color coded pex. It seems like every job where it’s used, someone runs out of one color and swaps it. It’s hell on service guys sometimes.
I don’t really see that type of pex used by plumbers anymore in Texas. I’m in Austin and the main crimp systems here are viega and heat link which both use stainless sleeves. I only see the old copper rings at Home Depot. That’s not a knock. That’s the pex I started with. I guess it’s just what’s available to you.
I’ll leave my offensive comment for last. The reason they have big showers and one standard valve is Mormons aren’t allowed to shower together.

I once had a pipe freeze and split underneath the footer of my previous home (the concrete footer acted to conduct the RECORD -18 degree cold). I am NOT going to have a bubbling spring (that I'm PAYING for) run-run-running into my crawl space because of some bureaucratic rule!
