This was my late Grandfather's favourite song, he whistled it all the time. It's so nice hearing you play it. Brings back memories.
My grandpa had always a song in his mouth too, he was one of those old chill people with grounded wisdom.

My grandfather was born in 1920 and his favorite song was Hotel California.

As a boy my uncle inherited the tin whistle that had belonged to his GGrandfather. He played it all through high scchool in the Marching band, It went with him to War in WWII from Gudalcanal to Okinawa, through many assignements in South America after the war and with him to Korea where he Commanded and Infantry Battalion for the duration of the war. Sadly it was broken by one of his children a few years after he returned. He always spoke fondly of it til he passed in his 90s.
I'm sorry but at some point I thought this was going to be a Pulp Fiction joke where someone had to smuggle the whistle inside his ass during war.
But the actual story is even more amazing. Sad that the whistle was broken.

The late, great Chieftains. (Well, Paddy Malone is no longer with us and nor is the band.)
I was fortunate enough to be able to go to two of their concerts. I still wish I could find a recording of a harp solo they performed at one of those concerts. It was a piece about the battle of the Boyne from the Irish viewpoint - so therefore emotionally similar to The Foggy Dew. There is a well-known piece about the battle of the Boyne from the English viewpoint but my Celtic soul prefers the Irish.

Am not Irish but this is one of my favorite songs. A few years ago with God's help I was able to come up with a different title and lyrics that take this song back to something else very significant that happened 1,916 years before the Irish Rising that commemorates what happened on the first Easter morning.

I first heard this song in 1962 performed by the Clancy Brothers... I like this much better. The Clancy's did it as a martial song, this is what it was always meant to be, a lament for the fallen. Bravo, and Well Done!

What an absolute throwback to childhood! I am a flautist and I've recently got into folk and whistle playing and having played a range of tunes I don't think any of them have as much depth and melancholy and feeling as the Irish ones, I love them so much

He deeply loved old gaelic music, and I knew he liked this song. While we were waiting around for him to pass this is what I listened to. It brought me some small measure of peace.
