Bro, coming from a guy who grew up in Pennsylvania, taught himself how to fly fish and tie his own flies. You need to get into it. Once you catch a trout on a fly you tied it is just an incredible experience. Also, fly tying, as frustrating as it can be sometimes, it is an amazing relaxing hobby and very addicting as well.
I completely agree with you. The first time I caught my first trout on a fly it so happened to be a 15” bow and it was an experience I will never forget. The feeling is inexplicable.
Been fly fishing taneycomo since I was 9, my pb is a 10.3 lbs brown trout The grey fly is called a scud, they kick ass in taneycomo since scuds and sow bugs are their main forage The fish follow you because the scuds in the rocks get kicked up every time you movie The fish have gotten much bigger and healthier since the stocking rate dropped from 700-750k to 500-550k trout a year Use to work at that hatchery (shepherd of the hills) so if you have questions about it let me know Glad you enjoyed your time in my favorite place to fish

I LOVE trout fishing! I grew up fishing lakes and reservoir. We always ate what we caught. Catch and release Is new to me. People called my fishing cheating because my setup was a a lead weight at the bottom, about 2ish feet up I'd add a pre-tied hook on a 9 inch leader. Then about 2ish feet higher I'd add a second hook just like the first. So it was weight, hook, hook. I'd put Powerbait or salmon eggs on the hooks then cast it out as far as I could then wait for a bite! I've caught a lot of very tasty trout this way!!a I've recently started trying to catch a fish with something other than Powerbait! So far no luck, but it's still fun to try!
This reminds me of growing up with my papa, trout fishing every chance we’d get. He’s passed on now, but every so often something like this will pop up and take me back to those days. Thank you LFG, hope you had a wonderful Christmas and happy New Years
Everyone who has tasted fresh Trout love it. If you want to learn more about fly fishing I suggest the Illinois River Fly Fishing School in Oklahoma. I used to be like you, knew enough to catch fish, but now it comes easy it was like flipping the trout secret switch. you can also catch them with a spinning rod and inline spinner, also worm and bobber. I use worm and bobber more for lake trout in the Mountain Lakes of Wyoming.
I’m a self taught fisherman who loves trout. I have the most fun fishing for trout on rooster tails. Just cast and reel and most of the time trout will absolutely crush them. Favorite colors are white or a corn yellow
Justin, I am almost 60, have been a trout and salmon fisherman my whole life. I just realized that I have been using the wrong line test. I’m definitely changing to 2-4 lb test the next time to increase my fish count. Thanks for the video and the words of wisdom. The under water footage was amazing!
I've fished trout most of my life and learned how to bass fish in the land of trout. I had the reverse problem before the internet existed. Thanks to shows like Hank Parker and others I learned how to catch big bass here. The green fly is a bead head stonefly, the little gray one a scud imitation. Scuds are little freshwater crustaceans most likely what the trout were eating while following you around. Great video, wish I could teach you fly fishing.
Best father-son relationship and videos posted on the tube! I love when y’all go outdoors together. I live in the Ozark’s now 20:37 and just can’t figure them trout out at all. Great content! 👍
❤️, loved this video, charrish all the fishing trips i had with my dad. He cant do it anymore. But i will never ever forget the trips i had with him. This was amazing. Thank you.
Nice 1lb maybe a few ounces Rainbow trout there LFG !! Yessir a lot of folks shuffle the bottom and catch'em on olive or tan scuds!! That's an olive mini jig we call it here, and that's a furbug fly we call it!! Beautiful Rainbow there Pops probably 1.5 lbs !! At 18 minutes that's a niiice brown!! Great time with y'all thanks for taking us along!! *Have a good'nnn*
I work at the fly shop down the road. You can check the dam release schedule online at the core of engineers website. Great video btw. Love seeing my local water on one of my favorite channels.
What fly shop? We were just down on Taney for Thanksgiving and stay at Lilleys. It’s always a good time down there and always anew way to learn to catch the trout. One day I’ll venture to the trophy area

Looks like what we used to call a Woolly Worm. In the 60’s we used to go to Roaring River State Park in Missouri and fish. The had/have a rainbow trout fishery attached to the river. Lots of fish that would rarely bite a hook.
They call it the San Juan shuffle or the scud shuffle when you have fish at your heels. One time below stagecoach reservoir/yampa river in Colorado I had a row of fish over 15 feet long trailing me in the dead of winter. It was incredible. I was Super focused fishing up river and I swear I felt something bump my boots. I didn't think much of it but then I felt it again and discovered where all the fish were at. I have to say that was the most memorable fishing experience of my life. Not only because I had a 20+ fish day and pet a couple fish at my feet but almost 3 feet of snow fell while I was playing in the river on top of the 2 foot of snow that was already there and almost could not get back out.
Thank you for the EPIC adventure with you and LFD, congrats on the PB's and loved watching, until next time, stay safe, stay awesome out there LFG!!!😊👋

The reason the lighter lines work better is because trout are extremely line shy. The smaller the better. I use 2lb. Fluorocarbon and get a lot more bites. Great video. Anytime you can fish with dad take it.
Takes me back to barefoot wading the little Souhegan River in New Hampshire, sight casting to every hole in the opposite bank. Every one of them had a nice little rainbow waiting for me.
Top fly looks like a scud, great pattern, works well if you fish it bouncing off the bottom. Bottom fly is a pats rubber leg. Another great fly pattern. Very similar to the girdle bug.
I recommend a 6/7 weight fly rod in Carbon. It is heavy enough to help with casting and light enough to not destroy trout mouths. I feel with a 4 you may be fighting yourself, it is more for brook fishing.
you Luckey dog I live in Missouri and haven't been there yet, your dad seems like a great person! enjoy every second with him Justin, nice bunch of fish thanks for the vid
My suggestion is to get a 4wt St Croix imperial fly rod. It's extremely forgiving and it was a great rod to learn on. If you still aren't comfortable with fly fishing, use the spinning reel on the fly rod. Use some electric tape to mount the reel. It's so cool that you and your Dad have interests in common. Thanks for the great video!

Love your channel man. I fly fish only for bass down here in central Texas and am no where near as effective with bass, as you were using a crappie set up for trout. So glad to see your dad catch a big brown on the fly rod though.

I watch this for 2 day straight and I am rdy to make another trout video but the American River in California is horrible and dirty due to the rain and the water there letting go... Big fan of yours, can't wait for more fishing videos you gonna post...
LFG - Try slinky weights (made from 00 buckshot and paracord) as a weight when you're "bottom bouncing". They snag up less and they're pretty simple to make.
Just FYI - you can use tippet from fly fishing instead of that crap 2 and 4 lb line. Tippet will be the same diameter of line and be 2-3 lbs stronger for the diameter. Guaranteed.

Up north here in Pa it's the best trout fishing around!!! Trout tastes amazing also. That line is pretty bright for trout though. Spinners would be amazing in that current. Good luck
May I ask what part of lake tannecomo was you on cuz I go there a lot and fish by the dam where the trout fishery is at the first point that’s aloud and I also trout fish the white river aka lower dam river of beaver lake and the trout there is fantastic lots of spots to be by yourself and to just enjoy the outdoors there

Next cast i got 2 treble hooks buried into my face right under left eye....the look of terror on my little bro's face was priceless. Lol two hour drive to Portland to have them surgically removed. Lol love u bro
Too many stories I could tell about having too adapt fishing different kinds of fish in salt and fresh water. You adapted and caught fish. Great vid!!!!!
Fly fishing is like bow hunting, once you start you can’t stop, very addicting. You should look up spey and micro spey. Reading current comes with time
That really pretty rainbow was a a colored up male. The stocked fish will get like that if they are in from previous stocking. I call them holdovers. Their meat will also turn a beautiful pink or orange like salmon
It's because their main forage is fresh water shrimp called scuds and they hide in the rocks so everytime you step or move you release a bunch of scuds for the trout to munch on
Bro, coming from a guy who grew up in Pennsylvania, taught himself how to fly fish and tie his own flies. You need to get into it. Hey buddy love watching your stuff, I live in Missouri and usually trout fish at Bennett Springs state park. You should give it ago sometime.
this is truly one of the craziest things ive ever seen in a video. those trout following you like that and schooling is insane
It's because their main forage is fresh water shrimp called scuds and they hide in the rocks so everytime you step or move you release a bunch of scuds for the trout to munch on
