    The Lexus GX came out in 2003 and was replaced by the GX 460 in 2010. The Lexus GX off road capability is top notch and both have many options that enable them to perform well offroad or in overlanding such as full time 4wd (AWD), low gearing, center locking differentials and descent control. And while both have similar performance under the hood and in the chassis important differences exist that could change which model you find best offroad.

    My wife and I have had both a 2004 and a 2009 GX470, and both have been absolutely bulletproof on reliability. We originally were waiting for the GX460 to come out before buying our 2009, but were disappointed in the way you really felt the extra 500+ pounds which made it feel sluggish in comparison. One other plus on the 470 is the side cladding, which make it virtually door-ding proof

    I have driven both the Lexus GX 470 and GX 460 extensively, putting 370,000 miles combined on two Lexus GX 470 models, and now 90k+ on a GX 460, and without equivocation will tell you my GX 470 provided a superior drive and seating experience. First-off the interior of the Lexus GX-470 was much richer that the newer, cheapen down with less wood and more cheap plastic GX 460. The engine in the original GX 470 purchased in 2003, was tuned to provide superior acceleration compared to the engines of later incarnations of the GX 470 and definitely superior to the GX 460. My wife and I often commented during our rides, that the ride and acceleration of my 2003 Lexus GX 470 was superior to that of my 2009 GX 470 in sport and comfort modes. The front seats of the GX 470 were plusher compared to the seats of my 2017 GX 460, but had less lateral support, and may have been a tad longer, proving a bit better thigh support. The arm rest on the GX 470 models was an independent and adjustable device, but somewhat thin/narrow, while the armrest on the GX 460 is not adjustable and therefore does not accommodate drivers and front-seat passengers whose height varies from design range parameters. The 2nd row seats in the GX-470 were comfortable and reclinable, with amble bolstering supporting thighs and ones back, with relatively useless 3rd row seats that did not fold flat, but rather sideways reducing storage cargo space, or could easily be removed from the vehicle and stored if not being used (I never used them, so they were removed) to permit my humongous dog passage. The 2nd row seats in the GX 460 are perhaps the poorest ergonomically designed in the entire automotive world. For a vehicle that is supposedly designed for passenger comfort and transport, not for carting cargo (Lexus used this rationale to explain their quirky side-swing rear door, claiming it better serves passengers seated in the 3rd row), to have such poorly designed 2nd row seats that are so uncomfortable to sit in for any length of time is inexcusable. They are flat, too short, limiting thigh support, and offer zero support for passenger's lumbar spine, analogous to siting on a park bench or at a ball park. The 3rd row seats are laughable, and only suitable for toddlers and for exceedingly short rides at that, as anyone over 4 feet in height sitting in the 3rd row will find their knees jammed up into their face. The front grill and bumper of the GX-470 provided a superior approach angle for off-roading compared to the overstated and grotesque front-end of the current GX-460, while the approach angle of the 2010 series GX 460 was superior to current GX-460's. I owned the top trim level of the GX-470's and the Luxury level of the GX-460. Got to have the Mark Levinson Sound System, it is fantastic, even if it doesn't have Apple Airplay (which I do not use anyway). I still carry my CD's around (Old School). I just purchased a Lexus LX 570, and absolutely hate the from Grill/bumper, much preferring that of the Toyota LandCruiser (could not find one anywhere near my location). However, in the USA the interiors of LandCruisers are not executed that same as they are in Africa and the Middle East. In those parts of the world the LandCruiser is fitted like the Lexus LX 570 is here in the USA, but to avoid competition with the Lexus LX 570 here in the USA, they keep the LandCruiser interior plainer, less modern, less updated, less rich. If I could get one of the new 2022 Toyota LandCruisers with the Diesel engine, that is the way I would go.

      Thanks for the comments! I too had a GX470 and loved it - put 220k miles on it without a single major mechanical failure. Wish I hadn’t sold it for a Yukon Denali (which I mostly hated). I don’t hate the interior of the GX460 but preferred the GX470 interior - nicer leather and support - though the air conditioned GX460 seats are really nice in the Texas summers!

      I have a 460 and I agree on most of these. But the one reason I went with the 460 was that it was being sold pre owned by Lexus, and the service history showed that Lexus fixed all of the issues it had. So much harder to find a GX470 in good condition, especially one that is being sold at a Lexus dealer. But regardless of it’s shortcomings, I love my 460.

    I have both the 2006 GX470 and a 2016 GX460. The 470 is the workhorse that I now use to haul lumber for my workshop and the 460 is what I use to go to work with. Somehow I think the 470 has more of the 0-60 mph type of acceleration than my 460 as on a trip from Galveston to Houston I got left in the dust by my college age daughter. Then again I had been her driving instructor so maybe she just drives how I instructed her. There is a noticeable difference when driving between the 2 as I have to Sport mode on the 460 to be able to catch up to the feel and driving performance of the 470. AT 95k miles the 470 is a gas guzzler at 12.5mpg as opposed to the 460 with 15.5 mpg. I got stuck on a decline/incline going from a freeway to a feeder road which my old 470 was able to negotiate before. Fortunately with some back and forth maneuvering and a good Samaritan who indicated to me what to do with hand signals I was able to get back on the freeway. The 470 in my daughters hands was able to negotiate the flooding here in Houston better than I did as I warned her not to go through Bellaire blvd as it was flooded and I had a hard time but she said it was easy.
    Then again that may be just my driving instruction.

    • @TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad
      @TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First - sounds like you're in my old hood. I drove Bellaire daily going to EHS. I've navigated those stalled out cars on the median plenty of times before as I blew past in my 1978 GMC Jimmy on 35s! As for the GX470 vs GX460... I hear ya. I think the GX470 has more pep... there's some videos on TH-cam proving it but the GX460 catches up and wins above 55mph. I do miss the Sport adjustable suspension from my GX470 but didn't want the airbag route on my GX460 since I knew I'd be installing a suspension lift. Both great cars though - you're lucky to have both! At 95k miles your first one is just getting broken in!

    • @andybub45
      @andybub45 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree about the 0-60. The main reason the 460 seems slower is because it is tuned for fuel economy. The target market of this vehicle is unfortunately soccer moms and older people.

    You're looking at numbers for an engine but you don't understand torque, car manufacturer dont often publish a torque curve with their vehicle marketing material to the so people don't always understand the 470 has greater torque output during lower RPM range then the 460. In fact the 470 leaps ahead of the 460 in a zero to 60 run. It's only at higher speeds where the 460 because of its higher RPM torque advantage pulls ahead.

    Went to look at 2 470s today. Both looked to be in good condition but they had some issues. Ruled out 1 due to a mismatched bumper and ruled out the other when I saw 3 airbag codes! My word of advice: stay far away from used car lots. Shop pre owned at new car dealers or private sale ONLY. It’s a shame cause I loved how that truck drove.
    Edit: ended up buying a higher mileage GX460 because it was being sold by a Lexus dealer. Too bad the good 470’s seem to be taken up already, cause I like the engine better.

      The GX470 and GX460 have about the same ride - the difference is really between whether you get the standard suspension or the upgraded one with air bags. Both the GX470 and GX460 offer the air bag suspension. The air bag suspension allows you to adjust the stiffness of the rear air bags from comfort to sport.
