My wife and I just took a 2-month car camping road trip with our stock 2008 Lexus GX470 to Canada and Alaska for the total of 19,000 miles. We went from Chicago to Maine then took a 3 1/2-hours ferry to Nova Scotia and another 7 hours ferry from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland and from Newfoundland we went on another ferry to Labrador. From Labrador we went to Quebec and from Quebec we drove all the way to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. From Alaska we also went on Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk, NT, Canda.
I've had mine since 2017. Zero regrets. I don't think I'd ever feel good about doing 600 mile trips in a vehicle that isn't a GX/LandCruiser/LX/LandCruiser Prado. Amazing trucks.
2004 GX owner in Springdale AR. Bought right before covid with 140k on it. Eibach stage 2 adjustable lift, Freedom Offroad upper control arms and Super Pro lower. 240k on it now and been multiple times thru Colorado Rockies, Smoky Mountains, thru the Buffalo River and all over NWA. Same wheels too. Best vehicle I've owned.
Hello. I live in Russia. great car. Lexus is my dream. but unfortunately I can't afford it. Our used car costs about $25,000. it is very expensive. I work in the oil industry and my salary is about $1000 a month. On average, salaries in Russia are about 400 dollars. For us, such a car is a luxury. Thank you for the excellent review of an excellent car.
My shop charged me $495 to do my timing belt service and paid $360 for the kit that is factory lexus parts. Deleted rear air bags and put long travel metal tech coils an dobinson shocks. Eibach front coilovers on the front looks really good 3 inch lift front an rear.
Agree with your thoughts.....is a can do vehicle that is great to live with on a daily basis. I did replaced my airbags and kept them instead of a spring setup. 2005 at 246k and no repairs needed.
Film the Colorado trip, when you’re 85 years old and can’t go and do like you used to, you’ll appreciate taking the time to solidify the memory and pass it down generations
When Lexus used to do SUV driving events to compare their vehicles against other manufacturers, I'd go every time! Because the GX was (and still) the only SUV I'd ever think about owning and it was awesome to see just how capable it was out of the box. Glad you're actually +using+ the rig, it's a gem. Thanks for posting!
i love my 2006 GX470 a year & 1/2 ago @ 218,400 now 229,500 replaced tires, brakes, rotors & pads, radiator, timing belt, water pump, valve seals & speakers. went to passive suspension, no air bags. Did all fluids. $13,777 plus $6,000 in upgrading $20,000 total but set to go to 300,000 easily.
2009 GX470 owner here - I didn’t even regret buying it at all because I have been owning it for almost 3 years. Before I bought it it had 144,000. Now 174,000. No issues at all after driving across the US at a couple times. I did most updates such as timing belt kit, water pump, radiator, new upper/lower hoses (OEM), new spark plugs, airbag suspension delete kit (metal tech) with new shocks Bilstein 5100, rear springs (dobinson). All stock height. So It ended up driving wonderfully and riding much better than the original setups.
I have a Prado J120 here in Kenya, I have put in 40K miles and now its at 202K...best car and drives rides like and A380-very inexpensive to run/maintain-I love it
best car ever (to me). fortunate to have this as my first car and unfortunate to have it be an absolute rust bucket but that’s what you get when buying it for 4k. nonetheless as a young adult i’ve done nothing but absolutely rag on her and she’s never let me down. bought with 184k now at 230k. 50k miles of being driven like a stolen Trackhawk and zero mechanical issues,,just a few leaks that are self healing depending on the season . oil still looks like honey after 6k miles .i will tell the tale of this legend to my grandchildren.
I love my 2003 GX470. Only downside for me is the gas mileage. Only major mod I have is the bilstein 5100 raised at 2.5 clip up front and washers on the air bag sensors out back.
I had a 2003… awesome vehicle. It was a 2nd car and unfortunately during Covid I found myself unemployed for a minute and sold it to cover bills. Would I buy another one someday… technically I did, last year I bought a 2023 GX460. It’s not quite the same but it’s close enough.
I feel like any luxury brand car you can get lots of miles out of if you’re willing to spend the expensive repair costs. The repair costs on this are similar to my ML350.
I liked my GX460, but I tow a trailer and it just didnt work that well for it. And, honestly, the 4.6L was pretty mediocre IMO. Just putting a set of lighter weight 285/70R17's on it had it struggling. Ended up buying an LX570 and its hands down a better truck in almost every way. Size MIGHT be the only argument against it, although I like having extra interior space. Put 315/70R17's on it and it it barely even notices.
@@RoadsOptional Price maybe compared to a GX470, but a GX460 of the same year and miles is not a whole lot cheaper than an LX570. People are popularizing GX's and making the prices stupid.
@@treboy A 5500 lb GVWR travel trailer. Meaning the maximum loaded weight of the trailer is 5500 lbs. Its dry weigh is about 4300. The GX460 needed to run at 3000+ RPM all day long, even on flat ground, to keep it moving at 65 mph. It had troubles running at 70mph without really flogging it. Big climbs were 45mph with your foot on the floor. If you ever got caught in a head wind, it would have been seriously bad. The GX handled the trailer fine, but the power just isnt there. The LX is on 315/70R17's and still pulls the trailer far better.
i havent driven one. People who have one and also have a Sequoia say the Sequoia seats are far superior to the 470/460 seats when it comes to comfort. Does anyone else agree with that?
I plan on doing a video to cover this, but mine is an 07. There aren’t incredibly dramatic changes, but the later models have some nice interior updates like a faster resolution touchscreen and aux input. And earlier models don’t have VVTI, where the later models do. Slightly more power, but a bit more complexity.
@@RoadsOptional yes please! A video covering this. That would be super helpful! What years have the interior updates? Not sure I have seen this..I would be interested in that too
What or where are these communities? I need help in Texas with sun roof realignment. I can’t afford a new car and I really just fix this along with the break pedal(it makes a stutter noise after being pressed(what is up with that?)

weird comment - timing chains can develop their own issues and as a former (and likely future) owner of a 470, 570, and numerous other SUVs, it's definitely not too small.
I have a 2004 GX470 with 150000 miles. It is a one owner car always in Arizona. The chassis notification came on and now the back wheels spin independently from the front wheels and the car drives poorly. I can go forward or backward but turning is difficult. Does anyone know what is wrong and about how much it would cost to get it fixed? Before this happened, I could feel a vibration. Thanks for your thoughts
I have a 2023 and it's an amazing vehicle. v8, the last of the breed. Putting a v6 turbo and raising the price dramatically in '24 killed this line.
Yes. Before even watching, I say yes

Excelente video gracias, yo tengo una Lexus GX470 2004 y mi única queja es que la mía no tiene el bloqueo central de diferencial !
Owner of a 460 but like the 470 as well I know they are different but a lot of similarities
Love my ‘09 just hit 86k miles!
Damn. To have that kinda mileage for the year is amazing. Hope you enjoy it, personally I would never sell it.
Picked mine up with
174k miles on it.
Used to drive one. Remarkable vehicle.
I have been looking at a mid 2000's 4tunner as an extra vehicle for trips etc but I'm thinking maybe one of these instead
If haven’t already I would change front and rear diff fluids along with transfer case.
Thanks for the 470 content
Just found one in my area for 10.5k with only 133k on the odo. Thinking of trading the 07’ tundra in for it cause i’m wanting something different 🤷♂️
Nice intro!

If you’re paying dealer prices, I don’t doubt it. For those who DIY, the fact that this shares parts with the 4Runner keeps the parts cost down.
Seriously considering a 2003 with 156k miles. 12k asking price

Ya the GX needs some updates to tow anything slightly large with ease. Especially when you upsize tires. Price is definitely another argument 😅

1 year and only 7 thousand miles. Working from home must be nice.
Wait that's not lifted or has bigger than stock tires? Looks great man
Slightly upsized tires! But stock ride height
I haven’t met one person that over landed.

Please let me know getting upgrade gx 460 caliber brake are they fit gx470
They bolt right up! Just track down the calipers for a 460 or 4Runner, and make sure you get rotors to go with it. No special tools or hardware needed
Was that a BMW ding?
Maybe 👀
So only real needed repair was front axle.
Correct! And brake rotors were badly warped. Replacing wheel bearings and upgrading calipers was a "while I was in there, might as well" repair 😅
They're still kinda expensive
yes worth ??? 1mil miles to gooo
squeak
Too small, employing an engine with a timing belt instead of a more reliable timing chain. NO THANKS
