How to Hunt Allocated Bourbon in Virginia

- Here's a short recap of the recent VA ABC bourbon drop on Saturday, 5/18. I didn't record a lot, but I hoped to give people an idea of what it takes to get allocated bottles if you live in Virginia.

Ashburn here - also hit 5 stores - got to my first one at 4am - had to choose between Weller 12 and Michters 10 yr, I took the Michters. I then picked up the Woodford 120.3, the VABC Widow Jane 10yr store pick, then two eagle rare's.
Good choice, if you're going to drink it, I think Michter's 10 is the right call. How is that Widow Jane? I really like the stuff I've tried but I don't have any at home. I saw it there when I grabbed the Bowman and thought hard about it, I bet it's great.
@@averagejoeswhiskey Have not tried it yet - but will... I drink my bottles :) ... I had an opportunity to grab a Bowman, but I stocked up the last time they restocked the shelves, just before they put it on the allocated list.
Like the trade. People go nuts over Weller SiB to get the rainbow set. Truth is if you have any Weller 107 or FP store picks you already have a single barrel.
Absolutely! I can't get excited about the rainbow, but I do get excited about good whiskey. For drinking purposes, I'd take a store pick 107 or FP over the SiB any day.
Absolutely great score!!! I wouldn't have traded the Weller Single Barrel (number #1 on my want list other than Pappy and BTAC) but, you did very well so I can't fault you. I've had a pour of 1924 and it was excellent. Still waiting to get a bottle at MSRP. Very good day for sure.
It kind of sucked trading the single barrel since I'll probably never find another one😆. But I'm happy with the way it worked out. Thanks for watching!
I was first in line at my local store at 5:50am. Got ETL then went to five more stores and got, Bookers, Eagle Rare, John J. Bowman, Baby Blanton's and a Benchmark Full Proof. All in all not to bad. That trade you made was incredible. I've been hunting for JD12 for awhile now, almost had one in Ohio but just missed it.
Nice! Let me know how that new Bookers batch is. Last year's JD12 was amazing. I've had a hard time finding them too, had to trade for the ones I've got. I hear this year's is not as good but I'm still excited to try it.
Damn, nice. Got the Weller single barrel as well and it looks pretty amazing on the shelf. Probably just keeping it.
Nice video. I showed up at the largest ABC near me at 8am and was ~30th in line. Didn’t get the Blanton’s STFB or Weller CYBP, but managed an E H Taylor. Then went to two other stores and got a Woodford batch proof and BT was all that was left at the third.
EHT at the 30 spot is pretty good. And you got to sleep the whole night!
One of the best drops we’ve had in a while. Had an enjoyable time hanging out and meeting some new people despite the rain. Was also able to pick up a Weller 12, Antique 107, Blantons SFTB, regular Blantons and and Eagle Rare…extremely happy with how it turned out.
That's awesome! Definitely the best this year, maybe better than last year's drops too.
Great hunt! Same here in TX. You have to camp out for hours to get really good bottles. But it's very worth it imo. I got all my unicorn bottles in less than a day! Most of them are store picks too as added bonus.
I don't mind camping either, some people can't stand it though. I think it's nice to have it as an option. If I hunted every bottle I camped for, it probably would add up to more time.
I wish they did some type of drop system here in Michigan! That looks like Fun! I just found your Channel and Subbed! I started mine in November

I wouldnt stand outside a store for any Weller bottle, might wait an hour for a special blantons though. The store in town just released EHT single barrel store picks and other killers and people rolled up at opening and got whatever they wanted.
Hard to argue with this. I will usually reach for a barrel pick to drink before any of the BT stuff. If I had to pick my 5 or 10 favorite bottles that I own, I don’t think any would be bottles I waited outside for. But I will still do it, it can be fun 😂
I went overboard.. but my hall after driving to 6 different ABC’s in NOVA area staring at 9:50am - 11am… everything 750ML & MSRP - Blantons, Knob Creek 12 year, John J Bowman, McKenna 10 year, Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace.
Any time you can get great bottles for msrp it's win!

Alabama does the same thing, but we do get a list of what is at each store. The day before most stores will put a list of how many bottles they will have. You are aloud 2 different bottles.
I like that system, knowing what you're waiting for. And 2 bottles is a game changer.

You have to wonder if it the state liquor boards, suppliers or the distributors that make these bottles hard to find. These bottles are easy to find on most store shelves in California.
I think some with some of the allocated stuff the demand genuinely outweighs the supply but with the regular BT stuff, Blantons, eagle rare, Weller SR and OWA, there should be plenty of those to go around. Not sure exactly how we ended up where we're at.

Really wish I lived in VA. Where I live (except for a few good stores that do occasional drops), you either have to be a big spender (think 3-5K a year or more), know the owner, or be willing to fork over secondary prices.
The drops are pretty cool but they keep changing their system. Let me know if you want to move here, I'll find you a house
Out of curiosity did the person you swapped for the JD12 get it from VA ABC? Haven’t seen them in 757 yet. Nice haul
I don't think so. I don't think the new JD10/12 batches have shown up in VA yet. At least I haven't seen them either. Thanks for watching!

I prefer the spontaneous email drops. Have no desire to wait in line at 6am for 4 hours to purchase one unknown bottle. Btw some stores still have some bottles left 5 days later. Picked up a Buffalo Trace and Dickel 12 year today.
I hear you 100%. Although the random drops have been really hit or miss, and it's like Grand Theft Auto pulling into the parking lot. It would definitely be nice if they gave us a better idea of what each store has, although then lines might be longer and form earlier. I keep hearing they're going to implement a new online-based system but no idea if or when that will happen.
No one is waiting out there for BT or Dickle. You could probably go a month later and find a Dickle 12.

Hopefully someone else has a better answer for you. I know there are plenty out there but I'm not sure what they are. I belong to a couple fb groups but not much trading goes on there. Honestly I don't spend much time on fb. Sorry!

They've been doing them every 2 or 3 months, but sometimes they do random text/email drops in between.
God my area and state sucks when it comes to this kinda thing
It's crazy how different each state is. I love seeing all the different systems when I travel. VA isn't the best but it's far from the worst I guess.
I hate that we are subjected 1 bottle in totality.
I'm with you man, I'm sure they could figure out a better way to do it. Even 2 bottles would be a game changer.
VA drops are mostly shit.. you are better off driving to Maryland and buy it.. or just drive to Kentucky stores are way better, you can find what you got on the shelf.. of most stores.
