I've been following your channel sense you purchased the truck for your son. I bought the short bed quad cab version from my father in-law. His has 80k on the odometer and is an automatic. A while back I read on the Mopar forums that sensors for this engine were getting hard to find. Your issue has proven them right. I'll be following along to see how you resolve this.

Nice truck! Mines a automatic wish it was a stick. My truck has weird issue where it runs funny at part throttle under load.. idles fine and at wide open throttle but sometimes it's running like crap between like 2500-3500 rpm. I have trouble getting parts since I've had the truck over 10 years ago. 98+was more desirable year Mines a 97 unfortunately. I have no engine codes either really frustrating..

  • @michaeljkeyes

I've had my 98 V10 ram 3500 since 2002. About 9 years ago I had this exact problem. Changed every sensor you can think of. Crank, cam, throttle etc even changed the coil packs. Back then you could still get it all at local parts stores. It finally one day wouldn't even turn over anymore, it just cranked and cranked and cranked. It ended up being the ECU. So I ordered a new one of those. Never had a problem since. Back in the day I hauled a big RV cross country with it. It has been my ranch truck pulling round bail trailers with it and it has pretty much been my daily driver. And, this is the only repair besides an alternator an idler pulley to the motor I have had to make. I had to repair the CAD on the front axle and have replaced the front hubs a few times. It's a 5 speed so it has never gone down on my like an automatic would have. I've changed the clutch once. After 18 years of owning this truck I will probably die with my V10.

The ECU on these early dodges had a connection problem, the connectors would pull back and make bad contacts and occasionally fry the ECU, zip tieing the connectors to the ECU can help prevent that.

one of the reasons for the v10 gas engine was here in canada you bought a dodge truck with a v10 the government would pay you to covert it to run on propane or natural gas so in other words you got the job done free and the engine was free too, and at the time there was no modern gas engines out there for 3/4 ,1 ton and up medium duty trucks

There are a few known spots, I believe 3, within the engine harness where the 5v feed wire will have a failure in a solder joint. All of the sensors on the truck run off a single feed, so trace back the wire from each sensor to find the joints. One is close to the crank sensor, one is around the a/c compressor and one is near the throttle body.

I know this video is old. I watched it when you first bought the truck for your son.
I had just recently purchased my own V10 truck. I my own truck is not needed for work.

The coil packs can be ordered and swapped from the Dodge Viper. I verified it today. Same price. 4 pack coil was more expensive by double the cost of the 6 pack. Ram or Viper.

I'll just put this here. The Fire Department here had a Dodge V-10 response vehicle. The engine blew and they wanted a new one, so, I put one in. Out of the crate moved parts one to another and I installed it without having any trouble. Got it running, cycled through 4 heat changes and test drove the truck. Next day I ran a simulated emergency run and all was well. They picked up the truck and 3 days later had it towed back to me with a no start condition and was coded Crankshaft Sensor intermittent. Changed the sensor and returned the truck only to have it brought back on the hook! Sometimes a guy gets a bad part so I replaced it with Dodge parts. Same thing? Dang!!! After spending HOURS surfing and reading and talking and trying, Dodge put out a service warning about this same issue. I could replace the part for infinity and the same issue would bare its ugly head! Why??? According to the service advisory, when enough engine wear occurs or the "EXCITER" ring isn't in the exact position the Crankshaft Sensor will not work properly if at all. The engine manufacturer came down, removed the engine, pulled the pan, checked the travel on the main bearings back and forth. The travel was in "spec" but when he checked the "Exciter Ring," it was, I can't remember the thousandths off but it would never run with that Crankshaft. He brought another engine, showed us that the wrong Crankshaft was used in building and rebuilt the new engine and replaced it and its been gone for 7 months now. Just letting you know that the sensor may be okay but there may be other deeper problems. I also had a Hemi that acted the same way with intermittent run that had a broken wire that took a week on and off to find until I got frustrated (pissed) and pulled on the wires until I pulled the broken wire apart! Ohm the wires back to the computer and check the connectors then go deeper. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing your story with us! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Love the channel! I would get a scope pattern of the old sensor and compare that to the new sensor after you have fitted it. Also ohm readings of the old sensor and new sensor, record those and compare later if the new sensor fails again. Another thought is you might be able to find a different sensor that would fit the block but have a different harness connector. Change the harness connector and you should be good to go.

When they arrived, and I went to install them, I found out why they were so cheap. They were of low quality, and none of the holes lined up. The parts that they were replacing, had lasted 6 years, I only got 1 year out of the parts from Rock Auto.

I would be looking for a lose or corroded wiring plug that is not monitored by the ECM circuit in a vehicle that old as you have no engine check light coming on, crank position sensor will usually throw up a engine check light. I have seen a simple but over looked lose battery terminal create these cutting out problem as well as main power feed wires inside plastic connectors plugs. This is one of those terrible problems to find unless you just happen to touch the right wire and have the engine cut out sometimes.

Something to try is a Camshaft sensor Crankshaft sensor sync. I don't have much experience with these engines but some engines the camshaft has some adjustment to its placement. You do need a Oscilloscope to do this. what you are doing is lining up the cam sensor signal to the crank sensor signal which in turn will tell the computer where the motor is in its rotation so the computer can fire the fuel injectors and fire the ignition coils at the correct time.

  • @jasonmorgan3709
    @jasonmorgan3709 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sounds like an ECM problem. If you don’t continue to have an engine light on and the sensor is “resetting” itself and letting the engine restart, the sensor isn’t bad. Find a good electronic diagnostic guy and have them checked out. @SouthMainAuto is a great diagnostic guy. However he’s in NY.

And check the fuel pressure just to be sure if it’s stalling out then you should be losing spark altogether it shouldn’t restart that’s why I don’t feel it’s just the cam sensor cam sensors go out they go out they don’t work and then start and stop

The crank sensor on mine will randomly get stuck at 5v instead of switching between 0v and 5v. Scoped the CKP, CMP and ASD output; CKP is first to fail, then truck stalls. I had scoped back probed at PCM pins. CKP replaced 6 months ago. Seems like the PCM is doing its job of supplying 5Vref to the CKP, but the sensor itself seems to be shorting to 5vref? I'll try cleaning the connector at front of engine.

Triton 3v was awful, the 2v were better except for the spark plug issue which was not as common as you think. The triton 4.6 and 2v 5.4 were reliable if well maintained.

Sounds like my problem with trying to find a genuine cam sensor for my 95 Powerstroke. The factory ones last for ever but now seems all I can find are cheap junk ones that like to go bad after about a year. Even Motorcraft positive battery cables for this said F350 Powerstroke are impossible to find. Was calling Ford dealers all the way in Alaska trying to find one. Oh and at 11:18 I've asked the same question my self so many times that if I had a dollar every time someone did that I'd be rich now.

Look at the freeze frame data. See what is lost. Some one has got to have a NOS CPS somewhere. I think there may be achange in the number on the reluctor teeth on the crank. I'v seen it with the Hemi v8 years ago.

I turned to my wife and said I could back my old Road Commander II COE with 45' trailer (yes, it's been awhile) into a blind side back-in and do it in one shot but I can't park her little POS mustang for the life of me.

Mine did the same except the oxygen sensors weren't hooked up and ran fine soon as I hooked oxygen sensors it started and the engine light went out the it started stumbling until it would kick those sensors off and engine light came on again. Then it ran fine. I'm about to unhook them and see if it runs fine again. I did notice if I totally unhooked battery, it would I guess " reset it self " and run rough till it figured out it didn't have the oxygen sensors. Let you know how it acts when I unhook them
