Great review! Thanks Kirk. Have you tried the Aventon bikes? I’m trying to find a bike that I can use in urban settings but also do like trails.

What's with all the alpha advertising with so many ebikes? Especially for the US market

I'm wondering something. What's the range with the 28 mph setting after getting the app? I'd doubt it's still 60 miles alone/80 miles Pedal Assist

I'm assuming you meant unlocking class3 with the app. Just getting the app and registering will only take it out of 5mph new-buyer creep mode. I have my HovAlpha step-through unlocked. I don't think it matters that much, for me, unless I re-geared the thing. I can't pedal as fast as Kirk (I tend to wobble in the legs more than I'm comfortable with when pedaling fast on ANY bike). Even though I can manage pulling off 22mph-ish pedaling, about 18-20mph is as fast as I can pedal and still feel stable. 20mph on a bike is scary fast as it is. That said, this bike is such a beast, it handles any speed with grace and poise.
Unlocking to class three only unlocks 'pedal assist' up to 28mph, which is what class 3 is. You still can't do throttle only over 20mph. I can tell you that, unlocked, the only advantage for me is times when I'm going down a hill; I pedal up to about 18mph with assist level 5 and then quit when the bike can gather or maintain it's own momentum. There seems to be a 'coast assist' of some sort that enables the bike to evenly gather speed on downhills and negate any unwanted inertia.
So, to make a long story longer, unless you are a naturally fast at pedaling, I don't see any impact on range.
I'm not a bike expert but I'm hoping to re-gear so I can go a lot faster if I need to.
I've modded my bike a bit. The existing seat was WAY to hard. I put on a Cloud9 seat and a suspension seat-post.
I also replaced the front hydraulic brake cable with a longer one so I could put in a stem extension and raise the handlebars. I prefer to ride with upright body in cruiser format but I wanted the fat tire and off-road ability so I had to make a compromise. My changes sort of hybridized it to be easier on my back and wrists. As a rider with 'extra luggage', as it were, bending over too far can be brutal over the longer treks.
I highly recommend signing up for the newsletter. They pop off discount codes here and there.
If you get the bike, I highly recommend to go ahead and get the fenders and luggage racks if you can.

I have the hovcart. Pedaling past 20 is difficult ghost pedaling. Can only do for a few moments up to 24 as its awkward.

The HovAlpha is no different. I have one and it is an amazingly capable and fun to ride bike. But I do wish the gearing was higher because I have to pedal fast and furious to achieve 24 mph and can only do it for short bursts. I'm thinking of looking into getting a larger chainring. Being 66yo doesn't help either.
