    I have had several Penn reels .. never had a problem with any .. .. never needed to take screwdriver(s) to them but just clean them ..never disembowelled the internals .. solid performers .. fully endorsed

      Yh but you need to remove blue grease it's terrible

      Hi Albert but just as Dan has already said below, Lose the blue grease it will only slow down the reel and eventually get into the bearings. Plus if you are a beach caster you will need to oil the bearings at some point to get the best from the reel.

    Well explained and put together. Cleaned my bearings out on my fathom 12s the same and used 3 in 1. Still not been on the beach to use yet. All the best Vernon.

    noticed the oil you use is very light machine oil , I use a oil called acf 50 and is a little on the pricey side but good for inside and outside of reels and also protects your bearings far better than machine oil , look it up and try it , I also use it on my motorbikes , , can't be bad as they use this on the typhoon jets to stop corrosion , look it up on TH-cam ,

    Thanks for taking the time out to make this video, was a big help to me and an enjoyable watch. - I'm thinking of treating myself to a multiplier reel and after looking at different makes and models, I've come to the conclusion that the Penn 525 is a good reel to have, and represents good value for the price. Watching your video not only showed me to service and make the reel better, by changing the blue grease for oil, but it let me see the build quality of the insides.
    Question: With multiplier reels, it seems easy to remove the spool, just take off the end cap, so can you get different spools to load with different line, similar to what you can do with a fixed spool reel?

      Hi David, sorry this is a Year too late for a reply, I have taken a huge step from this channel for some time now but now I am gradually coming back to it. Personally, I am sure you can't put other spools on this reel other than the one it comes with. so if you are looking to have spare spools for other lines like braid or mono you will have to buy second-hand spools then take the screws off the side plate to get to the spool and change it that way. Hope this has helped

    Only just come across your channel.That was well presented and explained.It would be interesting to know if other people's reels have the screw missing,or if Penn didn't bother to put it in ! The other thing with the amount of play in the shaft could be because in previous models there was a brass plate securing it down ?

    • @anglingpassion5039
      @anglingpassion5039  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it helped you and yes could be correct about the brass plate. I do feel I be selling this reel soon anyway as I'm not over keen on the mag4 to compared to the others. Yes I find it smoother to use but abit more heavy and the knob adjuster for the use of the mags feels awkward at times and in the way as I like resting my parm on that side for retrieving

    I'm having a problem on both of my 525 mag 4's after performing a similar service, both reels are not adjusting to the full star drag range.. Do you know what has caused this? Basically, the star drag is just stuck on one setting, can't seem to fully tighten it down or adjust the range. Thanks in advance. Great video.

      Hi Ben I have had similar problems before with the Penn 525s. without seeing the reel it is difficult for me to help However when I had issues with the star drag I added an extra washer that I purchased from eBay that then solve the problem. The huge problem with the Penn 525s which range from the mag2 and the mag3 is I think they did make some bad batches as I have had to fix so many over time. Hope I have helped you ben sorry for such late replies.

    • @DansonSeaRigs
      @DansonSeaRigs ปีที่แล้ว

      @Angling Passion no problem mate, will keep a look out for the washer issue, so thank you for that.
      I actually found that it was an assembly issue to do with the two spring tensioners, I had over tightened them, thus not giving enough give to compress the star drag mechanise when closing up the reel. 👍🫨 Needless to say, all working great now. 👍

  • @stephen579
    @stephen579 ปีที่แล้ว

    Forgive me for saying this but I can't entirely agree with you on removing the grease from the gears as it is there to protect, yes Clean and oil the spool bearings as grease will reduce the cast but it will make no difference in the gears.

    • @anglingpassion5039
      @anglingpassion5039  ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to forgive and I get your point but the problem what I found tends to happen is the grease becomes almost like watery and will quickly run in the bearings in no time as soon as you have re-oiled them. A little grease is OK but not excessive how the real will come

    I did this with my 2 followed the video and when put back together the drag would tighten but line could still be taken there was no friction. Any ideas what i dod wrong? I checked them several times everything was in the right place. Ended up swapping them at the shop i bought them from but since then ive not been able to service them and they need it.

    • @anglingpassion5039

      Yes I know exactly what you mean here as I experienced the same out come. What I did was is added an extra star drag washer this then solved the problem.

    Greetings. I was very interested in this coil. Can you please tell me which one is more suitable for loads of 40-70 grams (1.5-2.5 ounces) on a mono-line 0.38 millimeters (17 libres)? The casting range is needed 70-100 meters (75-110 yards), and after casting, you still need to freely release the rig downstream about 80-100 meters (90-110 yards).
    Please help me choose between 525 mag4 and 515 mag4. Thank you in advance for your response.

    • @anglingpassion5039

      The oil I have just run out of is what I have had for donkey's years was some Okuma reel oil which I am sad about as I have no more left However I have noticed the TGs Rocket Fuel Reel Oil seems to work just as well. I had currently used the Yellow one but I am finding it on the thin side so maybe I will try the red one soon. Hope I have helped thanks

    You don't need to take the Lever off to remove the Side Plate. 😅

    • @anglingpassion5039
      @anglingpassion5039  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you do have to on this model as it's a fatter lever than the others and your probably end up scratching the side plate if you faulse it out
