  • Fishman Fluence and Fluence Modern are great pickups. But. It has been said that the Fluence modern sounds like or even is a clone of the Seymour Duncan JB (SH-4 or TB-4) Pickup.
In this video we do a SPECTRUM ANALYSIS and an Audio testto see if that is in fact the case.
The voice 2 of the Fishman Fluence modern is described as a classic hot-rodded humbucker. Well. The Seymour Duncan is certainly that but it isn't the only one. In this video we see just how close these pickups are. And to be fair. There isn't much in it!

    I just love those JB's!!!

I always associated the sound and response of the Modern V2 with something more like the Duncan Distortion moreso than the JB. As you pointed out the Modern has more of a noticeably compressed sound and not as much midrange punch as the JB (which is one of the attributes I love about the JB). It was definitely interesting to hear the two compared back to back like this, enjoyed the video. Cheers!

im looking like the fatter sound of the jb but some highs too, i think the jb in comparision to others bridge pickups, dont have that punch on high frequences, but, the modern voice 2 of fishman gives me some hope, do you think its correct to say that you can feel that warm/flatter tone like the jb( not exactly obviously) on the fishman?

Voice 2 on the bridge and 1 on the neck certainly have that and are what i now have hard wired to my 5 way switch. The other voices give you a bit of variety when you need it.

@@leonbrownmusic 5 switch? you mean that the modern fluence can reach different sounds that voice 1 and 2?

@@dr.dawshy8211 No. There are 2 voices and you can coil split . The 5 way switch is just the pickup selector on my guitar,

Nothing sounds like a JB or a PA-TB3 Blues Trembucker. Thanks for confirming what my ears hear (I have Fluence Moderns and JB's). That compressed, kind of "fizz" undertone from the Fishmans (to my ear) takes away the "touch" of my playing technique and the airiness of the tone to some degree. Also thanks for comparing using Rock tones; too much gain blurs the subtleties of the different tones.

Not sure where this comes from but the Modern V2 is not centered around the JB at all. It’s closer to the Distortion, which still has a similar resonant peak, but it also has a Ceramic magnet. The Moderns have a ceramic magnet but with blades, not individual pole pieces. This is somewhat responsible for the dynamic range difference but that can also be manipulated with pickup height adjustments as well. The angled pickup position in your neck through Stagemaster (great guitar!) will also manipulate the frequency response and dynamic range of the pickup, because the strings vibrate in a larger pattern the further they get from the bridge.

Some good points and i can't say I disagree. Without going into silly detail I have heard/read one or two commentators compare the two and owning both I do hear a similarity in tone. So it seemed like a nice idea to make a video to compare the two. Oh and the pickup on my Stagemaster is straight...... you made ma doubt and go check too!!!😂😂😂😂

Question, are the coil distance from bridge are the same on both guitars ?

What are you keeping the pickup height at?

So the Fishman has more saturation basically but isn't and dry and dynamic.

After using the Moderns and now the abassi and Cassics for a lot longer than I had when I did the video I wouldn't say fishmans, on the whole were vastly less responsive to playing dynamics but they do have a high but more even output when you roll the volume back making them feel like they are responding differently. I switched to the classics in the end and think they are great.
