Why Helena Shaw Ruined Indiana Jones

• Spoiler warning in case you haven't seen the film yet!
I didn’t plan on making a video on Indiana Jones 5, but after seeing it in theaters I had to share my thoughts. As I mention towards the end of the video, there are a lot of issues with the film, but the most prominent and noticeable one lies with the character of Helena Shaw. This video is a bit more of a rant than a video essay, but don't worry, I'm working on a big project that will be out eventually. In the meantime, leave a comment and tell me if you agree or disagree with my thoughts on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

At 1:38 you said “The film picks up with a younger Indiana Jones after the events of the fourth movie.” I think you meant the 3rd one because the opening for Dial of Destiny takes place in 1944 during the fall of the Nazi empire and film 4 is set in 1957.

In the Open Source world a decade ago there was a severe lack of female participation. Their idea was that the problem is *NOT* that women don't like developing, but there are just too many males doing it. Another solution was that making pink artwork for websites, bringing coffee, cleaning up the workspace and answering emails should also be considered "development". Of course, male developers producing code were considered "evil". That is how twisted the woke mind works.
Note that the vast majority of the about 25,000 Open Source projects were one or two person projects, over 95% male. I've been working for years with persons I've never seen or spoken to. We don't need to, we email about code, that's all. So, the arguments that females can't enter a project because of abuse is futile - you can hide behind a handle. There are just not that many females interested in coding. But blame the men, sure.

Nah, they wanted their cake and to eat it as well. So they have her "turn for the good" in the end and suddenly she's no longer interested in commercial gain or self-interest. Even though the plot gives her very little motivation to do so (she suddenly feels bad about how she treated Indy?). Lazy writing for political points. It's the same old thing, the promotion of one group by the denigration and marginalization of another. Bad if you are on one side of the spectrum, heroic if on the other.

She's a flat out sociopath. She views other people as nothing more than tools for her personal gain. The old boyfriend used to get a ring and black market connections. Using the hispanic version of short round as her gopher -- who was so forgettable as a character that I genuinely cannot remember his name and I saw the film 3 days ago. But most egregiously using Indy. For his connections. For his status (getting first half of the dial). For comedic relief, putting him down left and right to make herself feel better like she's some middle school bully. She shows no regard for human life, concerning herself only with whether or not someone will be useful to her and not considering them as free thinking humans worthy of respect. Some role model.

GTFO , to be honest all of the major emotional parts where the story is going, im really rooting for the opposite. , Indy staying with archaemedes, - at least he decides it for himself. THE MAN , THE LEGEND.(will be more dramatic IMO - a stretch though). the kid fly a plane through a storm? then knows how to navigate it (SMH), the kid winning on a huge man, the villains teleports to where the protagonists are. how did they get home? there are no runways on the ending just pure unbalance pavement full of rocks and the terrain is obviously on the seaside part! SMH i regret watching this trash.

BTW I rewrote Irina Spalko from KOTCS into being a Russian mobster interested in selling the Crystal Skull on the black market for money. Same with Rene Belloq, Walter Donovan and Elsa Schneider, only I rewrote Simon Katanga as Belloq’s employer instead of the Nazis. Monkey Man takes Arnold Toht’s place in my version of that movie. I also rewrote Walter Donovan and Elsa Schneider to where Lucky Luciano is their employer. So yeah.

No worse than engineering a divorce in order to get hands on all a man has slaved for most of his life in the pro-femaie biased divorce courts. It's like this so a nation doesn't have to support a lot of women who get themselves into a bad marital situation and can't support themselves. They press ahead knowing the ex-husband will be forced to maintain a lifestyle they don't deserve and could never have achieved had they not been married.

For those who don't know, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is like the UK version of Tina Fey. She's a very talented writer, comedian, director who has produced a couple of very successful sitcoms starring herself as a confused, cynical modern women dealing with stupid men, social expectations, relationships, blah blah blah. It's modern feminist comedy for a young female audience. The mystery is what possessed the producers and writers of Dial to think that she belonged in an Indiana Jones movie. It 's like casting Amy Schumer as the sidekick. Apart from anything else, the movie is set in 1969 but Helena is clearly a millennial. And although Harrison Ford easily matches Tom Cruise for train-roof fights, a car chases, the overall depressing message is that he is a relic of an old Thirties generation whose time is past. Also, the time travel is ridiculous. The Indian Jones movies are not science-fiction, they are about supernatural powers - the Ark, the Grail, etc. No flying saucers and time machines. Archimedes would be pissed.

Don't knock casting Amy Schumer in Indiana Jones so easily. It's not so far-fetched. I can see Amy Schumer being cast as the giant boulder rolling around trying to crush IJ under its weight, she can definitely sell it.
Alternatively, she *could* be the comic relief if she spent the entire movie running around and screaming and being hit by various moving and flying objects. She sure would get more authentic laughs that way then she ever got during her entire "comedy career", even with the stolen jokes.
Let me get this straight: pwb spent years selling *MISANDRY* to an audience of misandric women, making money and gaining fame out of promoting and practicing hatred for the male half of humanity, yet has the audacity to lecture everyone misogyny is bad thing? am I getting this right?

I have played some of the Indiana Jones video games in my childhood.
I remember I was often worried before starting each of them that a continuation could ruin the original trilogy - that it won't feel natural and in the spirit of the movies.
Incredibly, that never happened. The characters, the story and the music were all great and felt like they could have their own movie adaptations.
I guess the teams behind them had more creative freedom?

But this time around he could only fill an "Old Ben Kenobi" role yet inexplicably without his son to mentor who they absurdly
had killed off-screen in Vietnam then promptly forgotten about as despite obtaining a device to travel back in time to change the past he doesn't
. Helena is written and performed like a villain yet we are continually expected to see her as the hero. You could afford to bring Shia back.

Pheobe Waller-Bridge reprises her role as Kathleen Kennedy's self-insert character, having previously voiced L3-37 in 'Solo: A Star Wars Story', this time playing Helena Shaw in the fifth installment of the 'Indiana Jones' series, which sees the titular character as a broken, miserable, and marginalized. Over the course of the adventure they share together, Helena never misses an opportunity to point out how broken, miserable, and marginalized Dr. Jones is ... Yay! Feminism!

Thank you for making this video essay! I watched this movie last weekend, and I almost immediately regretted making that decision. The writers, producers and executives have stripped away everything audiences loved about Indiana Jones and made him, as you said, impotent. There are characters who get screen time, who add nothing to the story, characters who are beloved who don't get enough screen time and finally, characters who get too much screen time who are absolutely loathsome! I lost interest with the newest installments of Star Wars, and now, This... I hope this movie flops so hard, it makes John Carter look like a Masterpiece. What's most ironic here is that Disney thinks it's looking to the future, but it's actually trapped in the past. By doing little more than churning out sequels and remakes, Disney believes it's putting a modern spin on old stories. They are, but that's where their creativity (assuming that mindlessly reflecting real-world issues counts as creativity) comes to a dead stop. In the 1980s, Hollywood might not have reflected the social changes of the era, but they still made highly original films that were daring in their time. (Of course, they didn't spend obscene amounts of money on production, so they could afford to be daring.) But by doing nothing but updating existing properties, modern Disney has somehow managed to be politically correct and conservative at the same time.

Quite an ignorant review. Starts off with ‘I’ve never even heard of her so that must be a bad thing’. Phoebe Waller-Bridge created a show which she starred in, was a writer and executive producer which received widespread acclaim and won numerous awards including BAFTAs and Golden Globes for the show and for her performances on it.
As for Shia LaBeouf, I would’ve loved to see him in it but they cut him out because of his outspoken criticism of the last film. But even before that George Lucas planned to leave his character out of the film or at least not a main part, wanting to move it forward to newer things and noting disagreement with Spielberg on the direction of the next film.
But for some reason you are honed in on the inclusivity viewpoint and the brashness of the character. She’s no “Mary sue” at all and her flaws are shown, but her character arc does develop over the film, not using money as her sole incentive anymore for example.
You also failed to mention Mads Mikkelsen being brilliant as ever as the villain, and the climax of the film where Indiana Jones the life long archaeologist gets to see history in person. As for letting him die there it would’ve been poetic but then again it was nice to see him get back together with his wife.
At the end of the day it does come across that you’re another ignorant yank who does nothing but moan about politics.
