    This is such an excellent video. We started with 15 to 30 minutes of screen time with our 18 mo to help expose her to other languages that we're working on with her. But 15 to 30 minutes was not the end of it. Our daughter became obsessed most of the day with trying to get us to put on her shows. She would walk around making noises associated with the shows. It really distracted her from her toys, books, and tangible things that we could do around the house. She also started throwing more tantrums. We stopped screen time after a few weeks and things are soooooo much better. No more constant begging for TV and far fewer tantrums. My mom even said that she seemed more like herself! It's so important that kids learn independent, creative, inventive play that will give you the time you need to take care of small tasks. It takes more work than handing them a screen but it's insane how screens and TV can take over their waking hours so quickly.

    • @pedsdoctalktv
      @pedsdoctalktv  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, more screens can definitely lead to more tantrums! Some kids do okay with moderation but with some even a little screen time can cause more outbursts and eliminating it at least for a time can be helpful. Glad you found what works for y'all!

    How I wish I knew this earlier. My son was born in 2019 and we started working from home in 2020 during the hard lock down till end of 2021. As sales person the only way I'd be able to do my work with my baby around is to keep the TV on the hole day. Now my son knows everything, the colors, shapes etc but would not have a conversation with me and it kills me. At some point I thought he was autistic.

    When my son was born I wasn’t able to see him till 6months and from the 1st day he was out from the hospital after birth he was put on screen! Right now All he cares about is screen, he don’t talk or do nothing and am stuck with a women who neglects him like will give him food and let him feed what’s on the carpet everyday when I get home from work I would have to vacuum the rooms and put things in order his 19months and don’t even respond to his name, he missed pedestrians appointments cause she said she didn’t see the calls and now his pediatrician wont see him, now am in touch to get him reviewed for autism…this has been the most depressing time of my life!

      Try a different nanny if you're not happy with her and clearly don't see any development, abuse can make a kid silent and unresponsive. Any type of abuse, start small with colours, words, shapes and numbers and then no screen time for a while. Just be patient they all grow and learn at their own pace and you need to be strong for your child please refrain from projecting any negative thoughts or feelings you might be having when your around your child they can sense everything

She is nonverbal, can’t sit still, very behind on motor skills etc. now she’s showing signs of autism. Do you think the limitless tv is the reason for her delays/showing signs of autism?
    Her parents think limitless tv is completely ok and don’t understand the issue. I try to explain to them but they just tell me I’m judging their parenting and it turns into an argument. It’s painful to sit back and see the harm the limitless tv is doing to my niece but i can’t do anything about it.

    When we have to use screens we can chose better screen contents when we have to put them in front of one. Quality real life nature shows like BBC’s Planet Earth, like Apple TV’s tiny world, prehistoric dinosaurs, and educational ones, like Mr Roger’s Neighborhood (actual study show it’s better because it’s slow and very deliberately designed for kids), like NumberBlocks (I would play this one at 0.75x speed as the speech is too fast). Also as much as one can, narrate what’s happening on the screen with words they understand. Again, being bored is SO important for kids - you need to wring the sponge (brain) dry in order to soak it in nutrients (knowledge)… also an alternative might be the millions of awesome book reading TH-cam videos (there’s a video for almost every children’s book out there). Another possibility is audiobooks (play the video of reading of these books but with the screen turned off. I think it would be ideal to make sure the level of vocabulary matches well w the kid’s understanding. Audio books does get our imagination going so instead of direct visual we create the visual in our mind which probably counts… 😄

    • @pedsdoctalktv
      @pedsdoctalktv  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes these are great tips! Love the audiobook idea! And agreed, when possible, co-watching shows together and talking about what you're watching is a great way to connect while also getting a little break.

    Are these effects reversible if we reduce screen time? Single, full-time working mom, and I’ve unfortunately relied on too much screen time with my 4yo and 14mo to get us through some of the chaotic times. I want to work on reducing screen time, but I worry that the impact has already set in.

    • @pedsdoctalktv
      @pedsdoctalktv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I do! I talk about this in the video with balancing, especially in the pandemic. For example, you use screens so you can get something done but when screen time is over, there is quality time with your children. In my opinion, this can be protective in that the child is getting enrichment. I look at screens like containers (swings, activity centers, etc). We can use them, but they really should be in a balance with other activities. Also, in this pandemic, screen time is increasing due to lack of childcare help/parent working from home. I dont worry of life-long damage to kids. Just a conversation of how we can balance "the rules" with what works for our own individual situation.

I agree, that it really depends on the QUALITY for interactions happening outside of screen time

      I also have the same concern. my 18 month old has become non verbal and even shows signs of autism. we believe this is also due to too much screen time. would you be able to show us ways on how to concretely help reverse the effects? the good news is that in just 5 days of pure (almost unrelenting) face to face contact with him, he is now more able to maintain eye contact and even less violent tendencies (he acts out when he gets frustrated). please, if you have any information on this, it would be a life saver! 🙏

      So I never watched with my son but I do think it's appropriate for co-watching after one/a child is showing signs of joint attention. Co-watching is when a caregiver can sit with kiddo and point out things, connect, and this can build language and then solo watching is okay after child's language and development continues to progress

    This video was very informative. My 9-year-old (almost 10) is addicted to screens. I know that this is my fault because I allowed her too much screen time. I try to set up playdates but families are not always available for them or it feels like I am the parent who must host all the time. How do you get your child to entertain themselves at this age? She is not interested in toys and rarely puzzles. Sometimes she will read but not often. My oldest is a teenager and has a friend over all the time. I know there is jealousy with my younger child. I'd talk about what your daughter's interests are and encourage her to find activities she enjoys. It's also okay for kids to be "bored". They don't need to be entertained all the time! You can give her suggestions (coloring, playing outside, reading etc) but let her imagination guide her. She may initially be frustrated if she hasn't had to entertain herself much in the past but start with small periods and increase slowly if needed. I hope that helps!

Yet cognitive effects are understandably bad. So, I'm torn between. Unfortunately his mother doesn't speak many languages yet I'd not want the same from my nephew. I guess I'll have to teach him before he grows older. Because my sister saying nephew won't see screen at all till 3 years age. I've seen a kid 5 years age fluent in 4 languages. Was born into 3 and learned English from unlimited screen time. Maybe 6 years age.

      So yes, screen time can help with language development but if a parent wants to avoid screens there are other things can be done to help with that! Reading books is sooo valuable or you can listen to audiobooks or kids podcasts in another language

    Great video!!! What about e-books? Is it equivalent to “real books?”

      So from a vision perspective, and close work for a long time can impact vision (so even reading a physical book, you want to rest your eyes every 20 minutes). Same goes for e-books! For kids, I really love physical books but still take breaks if you can!

    I think a small bit of screen time is beneficial but it should be educational. It shouldn't just be putting the kids in front of a tablet and letting them watch people make slime or watch people opening toys. It should be learning how to use it. A screen shouldn't replace other ways of learning, it should accompany them.

      Yes, educational show are my preference as well! But also some "non educational" shows still can still be beneficial, like showing creative play or how characters handle big feelings in a healthy way. Agree it can definitely be a great tool for learning and connecting (co-watching a show with a child may be a way for a tired parent to connect with them!)

      @pedsdoctalktv9960 education doesn't just mean academics, it can very well be stuff like watching creative play and developing emotional coping skills too. Which are all very important in child development. Screens are a huge part of life now unfortunately, so I think we have to adapt to the changing world but also make sure we adapt properly, just like you said, it's about moderation and about making sure it's the right sort of things

    We have cut down screen time down to 1.30 to 2 hours a day. We have a 6, 8, 10 year old. Is this too much.

    Interesting. I have 6 nieces and nephews that were given a lot of screen time well before 5yrs of age and they turned out fine. I wonder if the study is accurate.

      We can chose better screen contents when we have to put them in front of one. I do recommend quality real life nature shows like BBC’s Planet Earth, like Apple TV’s tiny world, and educational ones, like Mr Roger’s Neighborhood (actual study show it’s better because it’s slow and very deliberately designed for kids), like NumberBlocks (I would play this one at 0.75x speed as the speech is too fast). Also as much as one can, narrate what’s happening on the screen with words they understand. Again, being bored is SO important for kids - you need to wring the sponge (brain) dry in order to soak it in nutrients (knowledge)…

    Why would we be watching a video like this? We know why, it's time to get children off screens! We don't want them to be as or even more addicted to this drug as we are.

    I gave mobile to watch videos to my son from his 8 months old, I was working in work from home and taking care of him alone.
    My son 2.2 year old now.
    Due to screen time my son doesn't answer name call, no eye contact, some times closes ears, repeats words which are not contexual like ABC till Z, wow, Oh no, answer me, wee, mine, 1-10, rhymes etc from the videos he watched.
    Now 2weeks back,
    I have totally stopped screen time.. He is not adamant about phone and he doesn't ask for it... Also I have started introducing many noun and action words from past week.. I can see improvement in listening..
    Also I have started playing with bubbles, cars and ball as a habbit everyday for few hours...
    Also, we have started OT and speech therapy last week.
    Please let me know if his symptoms can be reversed.. And will he speak????

    Babies and kids shouldn’t be exposed to screen time period!
    I don’t know why parents have kids if they won’t take the time to raise then! Parents need to stop being lazy, screens won’t teach your kid, it will only ruined their brain development

      It can be difficult when you and your partner disagree on something parenting related. It helps to discuss why you care about something and try to find somewhere to meet in the middle. Best of luck!
