    My 1982 Honda CB750 was one of my all time favorite bikes, even after aging into the Harley family. This retro CB looks like a winner to me.

      Shortly after it launched Honda had a full engineering write-up on their website, detailing everything from the design of the spokes to the design of the cooling fins to give that characteristic crackling sound as the engine cools down.

    Honda is spot on with the looks in this one. Sorry Kawasaki, but your Z900RS needs two rear shocks and TWO exhausts!

  • @rrazote2279
    @rrazote2279 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I have the 2014 version of this bike with the single exhaust. Horsepower figures are just over 80 HP which makes it feel under-whelming when you compare it to 600cc or proper liter bikes. With a 0-60 time of 3.3 sec, still makes it considerably faster than a typical commuter or cruiser; in other words, more than adequate unless you're a pure speed-demon. Honda bills this bike as a "sports bike", but I think it's more of a cruiser that can be ridden more spirited than, lets say, a Harley. It's fairly nimble for all it's heft - which I'll mention later -, but of all the other "neo-classics" save for the Motoguzzi, you'll be scraping your foot pegs sooner in the tighter bends. In other words, look elsewhere if you want a daily racer.
    Riding ergonomics are classic UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle) - upright riding, feet right beneath you, arms in the traditional relaxed position of not too close and not too far. The US (North American) market gets handle bars that are about an inch or two (I think) taller as we tend to have larger torsos. The seat is actually an inch taller than the Asian and Euro markets. I wish they just used the original seat and handle bar heights as I think it would've made the bike feel smaller and possibly more sporty. Braking is pretty astounding as the twin front brakes are taken off of a CBR sports bike a generation or two ago. Yes, you can lift the rear, if you're overly aggressive, unless you have ABS which seems to be standard this year as opposed to the "Deluxe" model of last generation. Supposedly they improved the front forks with what's called "Dual Valve Bending" technology. Other reviewers swear it reduces the "pogo feel" in the first generation bikes like mine, but after a comparison ride I couldn't tell the difference. This might just be a feature that's not available to our market. You can adjust both the front and rear shocks for pre-load. I think you can adjust the 2018's for dampening, but I'm not 100% sure.
    I'm starting to think that almost everything purposeful is a carry over from the 1st gen. You can call it 1.5 really as the 2014 gets 6 gears instead of 5 in the 2013 version. Everything's just about the same except for a few incremental improvements. There's the higher capacity tank, which may give better range, but to me looks too much like a large lozenge sitting between your legs. There's the spoked wheels, which, I guess gives it a more classic look. Honda added a slipper clutch, though I've had little issue rev-matching when shifting. The dual exhaust is now a standard affair. The headlight has been refined to cast a better, wider light. The fueling has been re-mapped for better mid-range, possibly to offset some of the added weight from the new features. And then there's the slight improvements in style like the quilted surface on the seat and added bits of chrome. Do all of these new features make the CB1100 a better motorcycle? In my opinion, they got everything right when they introduced the model in 2013, but it hasn't been the sales success reflected by the praises of most of the motoring journalists. I guess that this new iteration will ultimately be judged by the sales figures.
    So besides the heritage styling and the anal retentive attention to detail, at 1140 CC, this retro-bike may look intimidating, but it's really not. I've called it the most expensive and fastest beginner bike you can buy. If you can ride a bicycle, you can (almost) ride this motorcycle, it's that intuitive. If you can pass a motorcycle riding course, then you can definitely ride one.
    And now we come to the real negative of this bike - it's heavy. My bike weighs 540 lbs. The new bike is billed as the same weight, but I have to think it's heavier as they've ADDED more features, without any lightening or removal of any components. For as much mass as it has, while on the move, the weight magically disappears at any speed above a mile an hour. The bike feels so wonderfully balanced at low speeds, you can creep along in heavy traffic without putting your feet down, but God help you if you drop this bike. On the positive side, all that heft means you don't get blown around much by passing 18 wheelers and crosswinds.
    To date I've done 2600+ miles with only 1 scheduled oil change, some chain maintenance and that's it. No defects, no hiccoughs, it starts EVERY SINGLE TIME. I get 50 MPG, a little more if I'm not caning it, in the low 40's when my inner Valentino Rossi takes over . It's not flashy, but people often think I've either restored or resto-modded a much older model. Much chrome! Super shiny paint! Like the CB750 it's based on, this bike should easily stand the test of time because, like it's forebears, it's built like a Swiss watch. No, it's not a racer; it's a jack of all trades, but master-of-none bike that you can enjoy riding rather than tinkering (repairing) with it.
    Other stuff this review forgot to mention:
    Seat height - 31.2 inches (good for shorties like me, but you might feel cramped if you're near or over 6 ft)
    Fuel Capacity - 4.4 Gallons, which is good for almost 200 mi (depending on how you twist your right wrist)
    Top speed - electronically governed to 112 (indicated, not actual) and wind protection is non-existent on the stock bike, so anything over 90 can feel like trying to ride in a hurricane.
    It has a gear indicator
    It does not have any electronic rider aids save for ABS.

      ... you just need to get a reflash. I forget the name of the place that does it, but supposedly you can raise your redline, richen the fuel air mix (for a little more horsepower - though I think it's more on the low end), and remove the top speed limiter. I've heard people can do 130+ with it, but I'm not about to put that to the test.

    Americans first started learning about the new CB1100 when they saw it being sold in Australia and a few other countries. They told Honda they should bring them to the United States. Honda listened and began importing them in 2013. The response by the first Americans was that it's really nice but should have a 6th gear. Honda was listening and decided to start making them with a 6th gear available starting in 2014. Unfortunately, Honda didn't keep it quiet and when American buyers (2013) heard that they should wait until 2014 to purchase, the 2013s sat in the showrooms unsold. Honda responded by telling dealership that they could add things to the bikes on their showrooms (different exhaust etc.) hoping to attract and entice the 2013 'left overs' to be sold; Some did sell but not many. This is why in 2015 you could still see brand new 2013 models available. The 2013 and 2014 had a more squared off tank, but starting in 2015 they became more teardropped in shape. Spoke were added (I think) in 2014 and dual exhaust. At one point they also changed the instrument cluster and had a double brake in the front.

  • @Phaedrus-th7bi

    Yes, I believe the 2013 model listed for $10,500 (If I remember correctly). I bought mine used in 2016 or 2017 from a man who had tailbone problems and couldn't sit comfortably on the seat (upright position). He told me he got it as a 'left-over' from a showroom that changed out the exhaust and added a luggage rack for the tail end of the seat. They also painted the side covers to match the red of the tank etc. My exhaust is the size now of a can of tennis balls and looks really good. It only had 2,800 miles on it and he sold it to me for $4,600. There is an after market wind deflector that makes it look like a cafe racer or racing bike, but I opted for a windscreen. I believe it does 0-90mph in 7.2 seconds. I know when I am coming up a highway on-ramp at 30 mph I can get it to 100mph in a matter of about 400 yards or less. I know it can sustain 112 mph fairly easily and is still pulling if I want to go faster, but truth be told, I start really getting scared at that point. I would guess it maxes out at 120 mph, but I never took it that far.

    • @JDuBz815
      @JDuBz815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's limited to 112mph from factory unless the ECU has been reflashed. Probly for the best cuz most of the stupid 18" tires are only rated for that speed anyway

      When they added a sixth gear for 2014, Honda thought they would sell in big numbers. So they made a ton of them. A lot of those are still sitting unsold. They get released to dealer inventory in a trickle, so you can find brand new 2014's still now (in 2018) for around $7,500. I'd bet they can be bargained down a few hundred on that.

    Beautiful Motorcycle the 1100ex. Does justice to the meaning of "Retro". Though I am disappointed that it does not have traction control in addition to ABS (which it does have). It seems to carry it weight well. And handles better than the New Triumph T-120 on twisting roads and also is air/oil cooled engine (less future maintance cost). I think it is slightly over priced (considering traction control is missing) for a Honda. It would also have been a plus if Honda used a belt drive instead of chain drive (again less maintance and cost of same). Otherwise a definite win of Honda, IMO.

    • @JDuBz815
      @JDuBz815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has "traction control" by means of mapping on the ECU. Torque limiter below 5k revs. No real need for traction control with less than 100hp. If anything, they should have left out the torque limiter for the US market and bumped the hp up to 100-120 to be more competitive with bikes of similar displacement. Should have never had the forged 18" wheels. Should have had spoke wheels for the old school guys and 17" forged wheels for the go fast guys so we have a fatter tire and more selection. If they import the RS model I'm getting one

    It's a good bike but the price is too high. They need to cut it down.

    Still has an ugly tank.

    Needs a fatter rear tire and 4 into 1 header pipe. The price is right for 2 wheels. Double it for 4 wheels(cars)depending on how much crap you want on your computerized juke box.

      Fatter tires make bikes handle crappy, but we all know that.

      I didn't have any problem with handling with fat tires on my bike.

    Hey Honda, you know why this bike is not selling that well? Cause it is overpriced! Even a 1100R is cheaper than this bike and it has a ton of features this bike lacks. Learn from Yamaha and its FZ/MT series about offering a great bike at great price to get the momentum on your sales first. For example, MSRP on this bike should be $9950 max!

      Turco949 idk why you think Honda should work for free. Quality costs more than crap. Speaking of which, an HD logo on this bike would add $5k
