I own a diesel SUV and I am having no qualms about it, it's been a companion for over 16,000 km without any fuss. It never lagged the initial pickup and power-packed performance. Yes NVH levels are a tad higher but it doesn't bother my ears when inside cabin. For the smoothness of the diesel engine, I used Liqui Moly Ceratec as an engine oil additive and ABRO-DI 502 fuel injector cleaner. I love to travel places and hence also take care of its requirements i.e. timely servicing.

One important point missed is the resale if you plan to keep the car for long time specially in NCR. You won't get much for your diesel car after 6-8 years but petrol car gets registration upto 15 years hence you will still get good resale amount

I agree sir and like your all videos.
I work for automobile company with mechanical engineering profession.
Only point I have is- we will have BS6 norms applied in April 2020. With this norm oil refineries will supply more refined diesel ( low sulfur and low other impurities) cost of that process will make diesel more expensive than petrol post BS6 launch.
Hence petrol cars will be altogether cheaper in ownership post 2020.
You can google the prices of petrol and diesel in Europe and US where Euro6 norms are already in use. Diesel is expensive there than petrol. They even have small trucks running on petrol (gasoline).

    1. Price of the petrol is now similar to that of Diesel but less efficient.
    2. Diesel engine's are equipped with turbochargers which need maintenance after 5 years and Diesel engine's accumulate carbon composites after 5-6 years depending on the usage or might be even 4 years or less which makes diesel engines expensive to service or repair.
    4. Petrol cars are lighter to service and repair and don't have any turbochargers (mostly) because they are already powerful but are less efficient than diesel.
    5. To increase the efficiency in petrol one can actually use CNG which churns more mileage than diesel and is way cheaper.
    6. Running costs is lower in diesel and maintenance cost is higher. But these days, running costs on both are similiar but petrol have less maintenance.
    7. Diesel cars are about to be banned for sale in tier 1 cities soon.

Also diesel engine emmits Nitrogen compound gases and ash due complex diesel fuel burning. With BS6 norms companies need to add more equipments on exhaust pipes to filter and process that smoke before throwing it into atmosphere. That will increase the cost of diesel cars significantly. Also with those additional emission control devices- service of the diesel cars will be much more expensive than petrol.

Thank you Sir. But it is very complicated to decide. So many factors involved in it. Predictions for 10/15 years is little difficult. Price variations in vechicles, fuel prices , mentainace prices for both engines, future regulations for both engines and resale values of vechicles, Paying more at first for diesel cars. I am still investigating and feedbacks from last 6 months from both commercial and personal users. But your points are valid and helpful. One point..whatever the cases disel can not cost more than petrol, diesel is essential fuel for all Indian transport . Petrol is for mostly sofisticated vechicles like cars... If you buy petrol car , you will use as a Car, if you buy Diesl car, you will use as bike (more usages).

Diesel ki resale value Petrol se hamesha zyada hoti hai
Diesel ki running cost 50% lower hai compared to Petrol. In Delhi NCR people buy Petrol cars and get them converted to CNG after they find the running cost is very high
My colleague bought a Petrol Creta. Dealer promised a fuel average of 10-12 kmpl but he's getting only 6-7 kmpl. He has complained to the company but no help. Diesel Creta gives about 14-15 kmpl. Now you can calculate yourself

I think there is more variables to be considered, for ex loan. If your car is half down payment and half loan, then Petrol car will be cheaper compared to Diesel. There is also a factor of which city do you drive in. For ex in NCR, Diesel registration is only 10y and Petrol is 15y. If you sell your Diesel car after 6-7 years, you will not get a great price because after 10y, fresh registration charges would have to be paid which no second buyer is interested in paying. Spare parts of engine, maintenance cost and the diminishing Petrol Diesel difference are major considerations.
Having said, if your running is really on higer side, for ex around 2000-2500km per month, then Diesel is the only viable option. For all others, Petrol is better.
If you include subjectivity of performance, then objectivity factors cannot be considered. Cheers. Great video.

Bro, if diesel car is costlier, it goes for proportionately higher prise in used car market. So if it goes at just 50% prise, both for petrol and diesel after 4 years, being 1-1.2 lks costlier, diesel car will fetch you at least 50-60,000 more than your petrol car reselling prise. So you need to recover just ~50k extra from diesel car, not 1-1.2 lakhs. I am telling this from my personal experience. In Indian market, diesel car is more sought after and actually sells for more than proportionate prise as second. I had 2 diesel cars- Fiat Punto and Duster, driven about 30k kms, very well maintained, which never gave any trouble. After about 4 years, both sold for much higher prise than what corresponding petrol version would have sold for. Now I have Jeep Compass, where petrol makes no sense. 4 saal mein hi ho gayi na calculation ulti 😉. Phir se calculation karo 😀. Though difference is not much after 4 years, diesel still is more value for money.

Now the resale price wala part add karte..
    Petro 4 lakh
    Diesel 5 lakh
So the expenses (remaining) are in favour of Diesel.
Assuming 1 km in a year and selling in 1 year. So no operational price advantage of diesel over petrol and selling at price like these
    Petrol 7 lakh (approx)
    Diesel 8 lakh (approx)
So it doesn't change much as compared to 4 yrs.
Meaning low usage wale bhi diesel le to bura nahi, it should be your choice of engines
