I cannot explain how much longer and more consistent I am hitting the ball since focusing on slowing my arms down. Just a split second of drop into the slot before letting the body fire through created crazy power, like irons are going 2 clubs longer through the bag. This slowing down concept is no joke a game changer. Give it a serious shot, go to the range with this focus, play some rounds with this focus! You won't regret it.
One of the best and clearest explanations of the proper hip and shoulder turns and their relationship during the swing that I have ever seen. Great job on the drills to do so. Thank you!
Eric- thank you for this video! This is incredibly helpful. There are times when I succeed in shifting my weight to the left in a way where I hit it flush, and when that happens, what a great feeling! The problem is I can’t seem to understand exactly what it is I’m doing when that happens, which makes it difficult to re-create on demand. This video is the first time I’ve heard someone explain in such detail how and why it is so important to shift and turn the left hip (and right shoulder) in the manner you are demonstrating. I can’t wait to get out there and see if I can incorporate this. I’ve come across several of your other videos and I appreciate them also. I like your teaching style and I would be interested in following up with you for some video feedback. I also appreciate your most recent “short“ video where you talk about drawing the ball and how the one problem that might develop is overdrawing the ball a little to the left and then saying something like: “But that’s OK. I work with a lot of players who do that. And you know who tends to have that problem the most? Players who shoot mostly in the 70s!” 😂 Coming from someone who has consistently shot over 100, and who had a couple of rounds in the 90s and 80s for the first time ever this summer, I’d give almost anything to have that problem!!! Thanks again. 😢 Matt Gordon
Amazing instructional visualization I never received, despite playing for decades, having a single digit handicap, and receiving numerous improvement training by golf professionals. Immediate results. Well done, Eric.
WOW. This is the light bulb video for my struggles with casting the club. Coupled with your video on correct wrist impact position, i was flushing my irons like i have never seen. Thank you.
I was really having trouble (driver mostly) with the arms moving too fast and hitting it all over the place. This basic concept of slowing the arms from the top down AND 'clearing' the left hip fixed everything for me, albeit, the concept of 'the left hip going DOWN toward the ground' only complicated things for me. This might sound trite, but with everything else going on in a swing, trying to concentrate on getting my left hip to do TWO things simultaneously in a split second was a bit daunting. I merely think of 'turning' (clearing) my left hip and if my timing is properly sequenced with my slow downswing, I'm killing it dead straight. Thanks for this incredible wake up call.
Excellent Eric👏 Is it possible to do a future video for those of us who like to play with an Open stance? Which I find helps me to turn and clear my hips and still hit a slight draw.
I tried this on the range today. Initially every shot was a fade/slice. You have to train the body to turn left inner thigh to the target whilst slowing down the arms to get into the slot and then fire the right side. When it works it's a powerful effortless draw.
Excellent Jeremy! Yeah for sure some players will see different ball flights with this relative to where they are coming from. All things equal...... More hip rotation in and of itself.... Moves the club path more LEFT and reduces the face closing to the path So normal to see less draw/more fade to start The key then with this is to learn to swing from inside to the ball with a square enough club face to pair with it (thats what the best ball strikers do)
Eric thank you for sharing and explaining this. Going to work on this in the net tonight. I am really struggling with solid contact right now, especially with my Driver. I would assume that these same principles apply to the longer irons, and woods?
Totally get it Eric and great advice. But seem to hit slightly fat. Guess is I’m hanging my upper body back. Makes sense? Can you advise drills to cure this? Thank you Eric. Truly appreciate your lessons!

Hey Bob! If you're at 60-65 thats less about about the swing mechanics and more about you (the engine).....I would get in with a physical trainer/therapist to see how you can learn to swing an object FASTER.....have enough strength/stability/mobility to do so....so I would look there to get the speed up if you can Its much more about that than HOW you swing the club. Speed training.
I had a guy tell me one time to act like the club weighs 100 pounds. Basically the club is too heavy to swing to get the lower body doing all the work. It made sense to me.
The "trick" to slowing your arms down is to let the club "fall" rather than pull it down as you rotate your hips. The hips start the downswing. The shoulders follow. Then the arms.
Hi Steven! My in-person lesson schedule is completely booked at this time, but please email service@cogornogolf.com with the subject "lessons" and we'll add you to the email list/notify you of any new openings👍 Thank you!
From the beginning of this video it should've been leading with the sifting on weight .... cause if someone less good at golf as u are Eric this turn with no shift is gonna mess up the game big time for that person.... BIG TIME!! Even your own swing starts by shifting before any turn.... check this video in slow motion ...
100%. ... The trick to having your lower body win the race on the downswing is to allow your arms to become relaxed and literally left behind in the dust. ... You can accomplish this by using a swing thought like: "left foot", or "left heel", or "left knee", or "left thigh" - from the point where your hands reach waist height on the backswing, you think of NOTHING but your chosen left side swing thought. ... In other words, you hit the ball with, say, your "left foot". Your arms play zero role. You literally - mentally and physically - hit the ball with your left foot. ... If you're thinking of your left foot from the middle of the backswing, your arms are a complete non-factor, thus, they relax and are left behind for a split-second. That's the key: relax the arms and leave them behind you in the dust... ... You've gotta "coil the torque" on the backswing, and then "snap the whip" on the downswing...
Hey Tony! Yeah I would certainly advise against any movement causing you pain! As needed I would consult with a physical therapist to see what work arounds for you! That way you can swing as well as possible pain free
Yep.... 1. Make sure you rotate your chest open enough to move low point forward 2. The more the shoulder goes DOWN the more something else has to shorten to make up that distance. That means the right arm and right wrist should be more BENT through the hitting area I go over that in more detail here: th-cam.com/video/Lbluc0YCwlE/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUjRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGJvZHkgYW5kIGFybXMgbWF0Y2ggdXA%3D th-cam.com/video/EtGRf3FSY34/w-d-xo.html
@@CogornoGolf is this something that the more I practice it, (lead hip down, right shoulder down) my body will adapt and eventually make the necessary matchup naturally (more trail arm and wrist bend)? Or do I have to actively think about the wrist and trail arm bend too?
Yeah....wish that was a YES or NO thing but won't be the same for everyone If you adapt naturally all good if not and you have to think about it....all good too Nothing wrong with having to think about it....I had two swing thoughts last time I played and shot 67 :)
