Be gentle with the lost coast, and never turn your back on the sea. People perish every year, not realizing how dangerous it can be. And beware of fire... and bears.
Love how abc tries to blame California law for why the fishing industry crashed. There’s got to be fish for there to be a fisheries industry, the failure is due to overharvesting and bad management for too many years
Nice article except for one major error. Government regulations did not kill the mosquito fleet and commercial salmon fishing at Shelter Cove. Generations of poor logging and road building practices destroyed spawning and rearing habitat in surrounding rivers and streams that support salmon to the point that the commercial fishery could not be sustained. Major government sponsored salmon restoration projects continue to rebuild habitat and wild salmon stocks. It will take a lifetime to repair the damage.
Cool story, beautiful setting but John was a little incorrect when stating it is the longest distance without a town in the continental u.s. That record would actually belong to Washington state
Overfishing, dams on healthy salmonid river systems, clear cut logging and more human impacts all combined to destroy the fishing industry of the rural north coast, not California regulations, The regulations came on the heels of years of healthy populations of fish, especially salmon, diminishing to the point that they needed protection, or regulation.
Good clip!!!
Beautifully done, thank you!

I lived in SC for two years. After awhile all the beauty takes a backseat to the loneliness and isolation.
That was profound. Thank-you.
Highway One was not build AROUND the Lost Coast; it TERMINATES at it!
