Among all the metals, gold is about the best at reflecting IR light, and most of the heat is carried by the IR light. It's also pretty good at conducting heat.
Yes! The JWST uses gold coating on its mirrors to better reflect IR lights that its instruments will process.
The reason they're confident is because gold has a pretty high melting point and because it's reflective, a lot of the heat energy is reflected off of the bar. sand it and make it less shiny and it'd more than likely get much hotter.

@@josiahralya9595 Breaking or melting a bar of gold doesn't destroy the gold. You can just take the pieces and melt them down to make a new bar.
Fun fact: All of the gold mined in the history of the world would fit into a 20x20x20 meter cube.
Another fact - all the gold ever refined at the Perth Mint makes a 6x6x6m cube. Crazy!

It clearly wasn’t made right.. though it is a fresnel lens not a glass lens if that matters?
Nah, that shouldn't matter. Fresnel lenses are just sliced and squished, but each segment is roughly the same as the corresponding solid/convex lens surface. Focal length is focal length is focal length.
Theoretically yes, but in practice: spherical abberation. You will need lots of lense elements to compensate for it. A typical photography lense has a dozen elements.

Gold is an amazing conductor, so you were in essence trying to heat up the entire bar, which is why the small piece melted and not the big one!

Gold is the best reflector of infrared light. It won't melt easily from sunlight.
