This is both horrifying yet fascinating at the same time. I applaud the scary genius of this. However, how does this work for adults? This video only talked about it as something for a child, but adults are susceptible to developing tumors in or near the knee joint too. I'd like to see how this works out for adults with the healing process and how the heel is matched up with the other knee joint.
I think they were just talking about how, in children, they adjust the position of the cut to account for future growth. In adults, they don't have to adjust at all.
I think they can probably just cut off more leg so that the joint is at the right height I guess they prefer doing it in children because then they don’t have to cut off as much leg?? I dunno bro just guessing
@@very7962 Litteraly the thigh is dead. You can't do anything to it and you need to amputate it otherwise your whole foot will be infected. What do you do? As a Canadian Board Certified Prosthetist I can attest that this is a highly functional procedure. The ankle provides good manually controlled flexion and extension and the foot is weight bearing. Not the most cosmetic prosthesis but you avoid the added complexity and expense of a prosthetic knee.
Doctor: we have to get rid of the knee, but the patient won't be able to walk. Other doctor: not if we turn the ankle INTO the knee Doctor: ... Other doctor: ... Doctor: You're a genius
I bet it was a prostetics designer. probalby talked to a doctor and said it would be easier to use the foot as a knee. this sounds exactly like a solution an engineer would come up with.
I'm imagining how far-future anthropologists are gonna react when they find the skeletons of people who've received this surgery. Like when we found ancient skulls with holes drilled in them as a medical procedure.
Foot is a lot better suited to withstand the weight of the body during walking than a bone stump. No doubt its weird but its wirth it. Pedicures must be annoying thought.
The irl footage still didn’t convince me. I’ve seen some pretty good satire. It took maybe a couple minutes reading the comments before I looked it up.
"the surgeon removes the affected portion of the leg, leaving the major nerve and artery in tact" We've reached a point where we can take bodies apart like legos. Future science achieved.
Not really afterwards lots of muscular issues and nerve problems, pain, impingement, other movement inhibitions, , weaknesses ,aesthetically damaged , Scar tissue build up etc etc . More surgery means more risks of these.
That was terrifying to see at first, but then I realized it's actually an amazing procedure. Normally someone who has a major joint removed like that would have serious mobility issues, but this procedure basically lets them substitute an existing joint in for the missing one. I imagine it's still quite a shock to the patient though, looking down and seeing their new leg, even if the procedure was explained to them beforehand. Sort of an instinctual "Nonono, the foot should not be turned that way!"
I was horrified at first, and then I realized how amazing the procedure was. Then I saw what happened to the nerve and blood vessels at 0:36 and was horrified again.
My brother went through this , it does seem bizarre yeah but it’s actually effective, it’s been two years since he got this surgery and he’s as good as ever
I can see how this leaves the patient with more function in the affected limb than amputation. No painful stump, and a new "knee" joint which is critical for walking and running. Amazing they can preserve function in the foot.
Do the toenails still grow? The whole thing is so crazy, but so smart. And being able to allow for that extra mobility for the patient must be such a benefit

I saw a guy with a backwards knee foot in a gas station in Wyoming, and deeply disturbed me. I thought it was some kind of backwoods “saw” type of torture performed on an innocent man. I finally found a closure with the help of this video. Thank you, so much.

It works for them too!
I think they were just talking about how, in children, they adjust the position of the cut to account for future growth. In adults, they don't have to adjust at all.
cut higher and voila
im sure It would still work. they would just need a shorter prosthetic, and their knees would be un-even
I think they can probably just cut off more leg so that the joint is at the right height
I guess they prefer doing it in children because then they don’t have to cut off as much leg??
I dunno bro just guessing
Honestly was expecting this to be cursed. Ended up being glad that people could still at least walk without one of their knees.
Why on earth would anybody want this.

As a Canadian Board Certified Prosthetist I can attest that this is a highly functional procedure. The ankle provides good manually controlled flexion and extension and the foot is weight bearing. Not the most cosmetic prosthesis but you avoid the added complexity and expense of a prosthetic knee.

OMG THIS IS A REAL THING?!?!?!?!?!? I thought I had learned all of the medical procedures but this one....WOW!!!
"the surgeon removes the affected portion of the leg, leaving the major nerve and artery in tact"
We've reached a point where we can take bodies apart like legos. Future science achieved.
Not really afterwards lots of muscular issues and nerve problems, pain, impingement, other movement inhibitions, , weaknesses ,aesthetically damaged ,
Scar tissue build up etc etc . More surgery means more risks of these.
@@elliot1850 Better than dying of cancer though.
Future science is not being able to die because of perfect A.I
That was terrifying to see at first, but then I realized it's actually an amazing procedure.

Today I learn that cancer survivors with a prosthetic leg may most likely have an ankle facing backwards hidden under their artificial knee cap...
Depends where the cancer was of course.
i dont think artificial is the right word maybe improvised knee?
Only if they got the cancer in their knee and they were still a child. So it's probably not very common.
@@madmanwithaplan1826 Meant the "kneecap" on the prosthetic leg.
I can see how this leaves the patient with more function in the affected limb than amputation. No painful stump, and a new "knee" joint which is critical for walking and running. Amazing they can preserve function in the foot.
Why did they rotate the foot, can’t they cut accordingly and attach as it is?
I'm going into the field of prosthesis and I never knew about that. This is so fascinating to me.
Do the toenails still grow? The whole thing is so crazy, but so smart. And being able to allow for that extra mobility for the patient must be such a benefit
Probably, imagine going to get a pedicure and you have a rotationplasty.
imagine having to trim your toenails in a mirror
