- 1 year ago we built a diy kitchen from scratch under $5000 because the abandoned home we bought sight unseen had NO KITCHEN! After months of waiting for an ordered prefab kitchen we decided to take matters into our own hands and built our own! I headed to TH-cam to learn how to build kitchen cabinets and got started! It has now been one year and I can make a large part of this eat in kitchen space better by adding a more family friendly seating dining room idea!

A nice chunky wood farmhouse table would look really nice
I’ve used a sofa as a banquette but I put wooden risers under the legs to bring it up higher. I eventually switched the risers for longer legs. It’s the best dining experience we have ever had and it encourages the family to linger over dinner because it’s so comfortable. We have always arranged our home to suit our family, sometimes it appeared unconventional to others, until they experienced it, then they were converts. You only get one life, live it the way you want ❤️
The sofa needs taller legs or the table needs shorter ones, or maybe get booster seats for the sofa when you are sitting there. The sofa is gorgeous.
Angela, I also think the couch needs to be higher. Maybe Elysia can make some "risers"

I love it! I love the fact that you aren't forcing the wrong style on your family! You guys are all about family, and that is as it should be. The biggest thing I told my kids was not to be "sheeple" . Don't do something just because the guy or girl is doing it in front of you in line. Don't act like a bunch of sheep following their leader. Be unique, be an individual person. I love that message. My kids are pretty rad unique independent individuals, and I couldn't be more in awe of them. Good job Phil and Elysia! I love you guys!

I love it. The legs of the chairs couch and table all match. We spend so much time in the kitchen why not have some place comfy to sit. Oh and that kitchen is still so gorgeous.
Speaking of rising up your family, I thought of the height of the sofa. I'd suggest raising the sofa to the proper eating/editing/crafting height with a two by four frame painted in your stair color (or even the blue cabinet color) and then reattaching the metal legs.
I think I was sitting in a weird way not really showing how tall I sit at the table lol it was a bad reflection of the height sorry
My problem would be the depth of the sofa, for me that would be very uncomfortable. I need back support.@@ElysiaEnglish
Yeah it is just too deep and too low for the table. I like the idea but the height difference is just too much to be comfortable and functional.
I love the concept but it seems awkward. You have to sit up close to the edge to utilize the table. There would only be sitting all the way back if reading or watching TV. It seems the reasons you gave for changing, you wouldn't be able to have the "sit back" option. It looks great in the room though. I hope you are happy with it.
Looks very nice, to short and takes up to much space in the room for my taste. But what is most important is if you love it. That is all that matters.

Well, it's certainly unusual, but an interesting idea for dining room seating. It's a beautiful sofa. But the only concern that I have is that it seemed a bit low when you sat. I suppose you could get longer legs to raise it up if needed. 🙂🤟🤟

The sofa is gorgeous ❤. I do agree with some other commenters, that maybe the sofa needs taller legs ?? You are actually sitting there to know if it’s comfortable height- but it ‘ looks’ a bit low . That aside - THE LOOK IS WONDERFUL !!! I can imagine stretching out on the couch with a warm cup of hot chocolate, looking out at the horses ❤. I’m so happy for you to be making your dream home 🏡 😘

I just watched the previous episode and the little flip of your hair was really interesting. It’s like it was lifted or sprung from the back of your head. One of my friends bought a 10 year old house so it was fairly new. They were in the process of remodeling when little things started to happen. She said it didn’t cause any real trouble so they accepted it.
Love the couch, and your house is not haunted. It’s open and feels light. I think the original owner approves of all the renovations

When I saw you were putting a sofa in the dining area, my first thought was nooo. But, once again, it came together beautifully. It does appear to sit a bit too low for the table, but there are things to remedy that 😉

Your new sofa looks really good, Elysia, yet what makes me happy is that you are so happy with it. ♥♥ I would suggest that you pull the rug a little closer to the island, maybe about six inches? It will still be partly under the sofa, yet that will ensure that the chairs don't catch on the edge of the rug when you pull them out from the table. Do you know what I mean? It just feels like the coziness of the rug is a bit wasted having so much under the sofa where it is not accessible to feet. 😊

At first I thought, "How is a couch going to work in that spot?" Well girl, you did it again! Obviously the couch is lower than the chairs, but I totally get the vibe. Reminds me of some coffee shops in our college town. I love it! I'm older and this is probably something I couldn't use in our home. But who cares? This makes you happy, and you are the client you need to please the most. I just love coming along with you!

Love it! I have my own business and am always in the kitchen on my laptop this is perfect. You’re so creative and always put your comfort and family first. We love that! Would love to see you remove the legs and find taller ones. Would be cool to see you build a storage system underneath that you can pull out drawers and store things.

Personally, I'd not be comfortable trying to eat at the table...or working on a laptop...or doing crafting...given how low the sofa sits. Cozy spot to kick back if your laptop...or whatver you're doing...is in your lap, perhaps occasionally grabbing cup of coffee off the table. Kind of a 'cafe vibe' which is more conducive to hanging out than actually having a meal, hours on a computer or doing anything which requires you to be more elevated above the work surface.

Yes, styling it, or just all of the stuff that they use at the table (adding visual interest) and what they store under the TV (with some cute wall hangings to the left) will make all the difference! Maybe some patterned pillow covers for the couch.

Love the addition of the “kitchen couch”! The colors are beautiful! I’m thinking it may be short term though. It may become hard on your backs with no support and a little too short I bet you can build something that would look fabulous in that space and not permanent like the banquette

Here’s an idea for your front hall. Keep the ceiling white but buy a medallion for the light fixture and paint it your copper colour. That would tie your entry way, front hall, and living room together. It would entail spending some money though.
I would suggest putting some type of coaster under the leg of the sofa to spread the weight or else the leg will put a hole in the rug over time.
I’m love the couch seating, and I noticed you commented on it, so no worries! I have a suggestion, I would move the shade strings to the inside of the window to hide them.
You'll really enjoy that comfy seating. The color is perfect as is the rug.

that sofa is lovely! if you pull it out from the wall about six inches, it makes your room look super roomy :) and leave a gap between the rug and the wall too :)

I worked at a carpet Manufacturing company . They always suggested a carpet under-pad The backing of the carpet will not get the friction on floor. The foam under-pad saves the carpet .
My back would hurting without having back support when sitting. I like the sofa and the idea of having the sofa in the kitchen. Love the whole idea. I also thought your chairs were to low or the table to high but never mentioned it in the comments.

I love the sofa. It makes the space more cosy and looks better scale-wise than the chairs. People have commented that it is too short or too deep. I figure that you have already considered this and are taking care of it. I know that the sofa would be deep for me (bc short legs). But, I'd still keep it, and have a variety of pillows to put behind my back. It wouldn't matter if the couch was the perfect height/depth, I'd still be slouching, sitting tailor style or hunching over my food or work. Lol.

I noticed the knots in your trim are bleeding through the paint. I use Zinsser shellac based primer on knots and anything else that bleeds through paint or may bleed through (like marker, tannins in wood, grease etc). The primer isn't pigmented so you can still see the stain through the primer, but it disappears and will never come back once you paint over it.
I did use zinsser when I painted them before I painted

I was just reading the comments about the sofa's height. My comments is this: I agree with most it is to low and can't sit back. But for the height, I like the look of a box frame for the sofa to sit on then, add those wooden feet that are chunky looking come in round or square to serve as the legs/feet of the sofa. The base/box could be painted the same color as the sofa. For sitting back, you could some back pillows so you are comfortable while sitting at the table. Just an idea.
