    The oil filter should definately be primed- filled almost to the top with motoroil before it was installed. Om turbo engines it is paramount to do so to avoid serious damage to the turbo bearings which are lubricated from the oilpump with pressure. If the filter is empty, the turbo will run without lubrication until the filter is full, fed from the pump.

    The oil filter on my 2003 Passat V-6 2.8L is located about a foot away from your hand where you unscrewed the drain plug. Easy to get to from the bottom of the car. You don't have to do that whole song and dance with the coolant reservoir. Glad I have the V-6.

    Hello great video sir! I. Enjoyed it and learned from it lol I have a 2002 vw Passat but I got a question... do you have to fill the oil filter up with oil before you put in or no? And what store did you get the oil idk what is good for the car I been us 5w-30 is that okay?

    • @hanoihancock
      @hanoihancock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. You should prime (pre-fill) the filter. It's a PITA on this car because of the awkward position of the filter, so I've never pre-filled it and it's still going strong past 200k miles. The weight of the oil is less relevant than the spec. Be sure to use the correct VW spec oil.

    • @joshuawilson2362
      @joshuawilson2362 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hanoihancock lol so I can pre fill right? Doesn’t really matter? Cause I been filling the filter up everytime but I see youtubers just installing it than just filling the engine with new oil lol

    • @PdPete11795
      @PdPete11795 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joshuawilson2362 I don't think it matters a whole lot. Technically it should be better for the car to prime the filter, but it only takes a few seconds for the oil pump to fill the filter and then move the oil to the top of the engine. At that point everything that needs lubrication and cooling has it. I don't think any major wear could even occur in that time frame. So, I don't prime either, its just a pain in the ass to deal with getting a filter screwed on when its full of oil.
      If you have the V6 30V 2.8L Passat, the manufacturer recommendation is 5W-40 full synthetic oil, my Passat seems to run well with Pentosin. However, any oil that meets the VW502.00 specification will do, that should include any 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil if that's all you can find. Just make sure it says VW502.00 on the bottle and you are good.
      Edit: I checked the oil specs here(www.blauparts.com/vw-oils/how-to-find-recommended-vw-oil-type.html#vwpassatoil) both the 1.8t and 2.8L engines use the VW 502.00 oil spec.

      Juan Mora '03 and '05 oil pans should be very similar, if not the same, but...sometimes VW changes bolt size for one year without explanation. So...some years may have a 17mm hex bolt while others have a 19mm hex bolt or even an Allen bolt.

      The V5 engine is very rare...especially in the U.S.A., so I don't Have hands-on experience with it but... I found this link that should be reassuring to you. It sounds like the V5 oil change is simple. It sounds like the only major difference is that the V5 uses a plastic endcap to access a cartridge filter as opposed to the metal spin-on filter on the V4 and V6 engines. Hope this helps!

    Can somebody help me out. I bought a 2005 Volkswagen Passat from the dealer and only notice later that there was no owners manual. It is the 4motion. But I don't know what liter engine it is and it is definitely not diesel. I looked in the door jamb for information but does not specifically say. I'm trying to get specifics on this vehicle to figure out how to do the oil change and what I will need in terms of the oil. I get by this video that European synthetic is important. Any help on figuring out the specifics of my particular vehicle would be greatly appreciated

    • @hanoihancock
      @hanoihancock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engine in this video is the 1.8 liter 4 cylinder gasoline version. The 2005 passat also optionally came with a 2.8 liter 6 cylinder gasoline engine or a 2.0 liter diesel engine. The plastic shroud over the engine should say 1.8 or 2.8 or 2.0. If the engine shroud is missing on your car, try to determine how many cylinders you have. The 1.8 liter 4 cylinder has 4 separate silver intake channels all entering the engine on one side. The 2.8 liter has 6 silver intake channels all mashed together on the top center of the engine. I'm not super-familiar with any distinguishing characteristics of the 2.0 diesel motor, but...if it's a diesel it should have a diesel only sticker inside the fuel door. Benzin is the German word for gasoline. Diesel is the German word for Diesel. Let us know what you find out!

    • @hanoihancock
      @hanoihancock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's another video with a few more angles of the 1.8L engine.
      th-cam.com/video/9D6pneZxnGs/w-d-xo.html
      If you know you don't have a diesel, and your engine doesn't look like the engine in this video, then you have the 2.8L engine.
      And if you have the 2.8L, congratulations! It's easier to change the oil in a 2.8L than a 1.8L. Here's a link to a video on how to change the oil in the 2.8L.

      Yup. Pretty slim margins. Although I think the going rate for a fully synthetic VW spec oil change plus filter is closer to $60, not $40, it may only make sense to do it yourself for the pride of ownership. Or...to limit the risk that some degenerate-meth-addict at the oil-change place will lose all of your bespoke fasteners resulting in your splash guard getting destroyed the next time you hit highway speed:). That actually happened to me with this car. Replacement splash guard and fasteners ran me about $150.
