I cannot remember if it was 101 Dalmatians or 102, but I remember reading somewhere that she made sure her contract let her keep any of her costumes in the film.
As someone who can be more forgiving of a weak film with gorgeous costuming, I always thought that was ingenious of her and her team.

In my personal opinion, Cinderella is the best remake that Disney has made thus far. It managed to create it's own story and style, a film that stood on its own without relying heavily on nostalgia, and gave new depth to familiar characters especially the prince. If Jane Austen was a filmmaker, Cinderella remake is exactly how i'd imagine if she wrote and directed it. Everyone was absolutely brilliant in their roles and it's probably the only Disney remake that i can rewatch over and over again

"Cinderella" will always be my favorite of the live action adaptations. Not only is it a great tribute to the original movie's concept artist, Mary Blair, and her iconic pastel art style, but it also makes the story feels so much more refreshing and full than its animated predecessor. Plus, Lily James (now next to Halle's Ariel) is easily the best cast of the Disney princess' and I'm glad her beautiful singing voice gets some moments featured as well.

Mulan is one of those things where Disney tried to appease multiple audiences and ended up pleasing no one. The criticism out of China for the original was that Mulan is supposed to be a larger than life super hero. "Brains over brawn" was not appreciated by those audiences. So Disney tried to return her supernatural aspect in the remake. I'd say they tried to have character growth for her still in having her overcome a mental hurdle to allow herself to use her abilities. This is represented by the contrast with the witch character Xianniang. But I think this didn't end up appreciated as much by western audiences. And in the end, the film still wasn't authentic enough for Chinese audiences so it wasn't received well in China.

"Puppies" (101 Dalmatians) as my daughter called it, was a mainstay in our house for about 2 years when she was 3-4 years old. Every night near bedtime she'd run into my dad's room and request Puppies and they'd watch it wherever it left off from the last viewing for a good 15-20 min. I actually thought it might rank higher, solely from Glenn Close!

The 2003 universal pictures Peter Pan was a great adaptation. Kinda sad that other studios are better at adapting 'disney characters' than disney. I think it comes from the fact that P.J Hogan really liked and respected the source material and wanted to adapt that story on the big screen. He didn't make the movie to change the story or "improve" it with modern subplots and influences.

They aren’t Disney characters. People just have ridiculous nostalgia for Disney animated projects. So if Disney changes anything or adapts the characters in any way people get crazy, but the same people give tons of leeway for another company adapting the exact same source material.

How to shake an earworm: pick any catchy tune **with no lyrics** and hum that instead until that is the tune you default to. Earworms work like that because you don't know the lyrics well, and your brain treats it like an unfinished task.

Great list. I think one thing that sets "The Jungle Book" apart as an adaptation, which is something I teach a class on (written word to film adaptations) is that it has its own theme. The use of the elephants as mythological beings that carve the rivers of the Earth and the idea of leaving your mark on the world is so well done.
While I do like the "Cinderella" adaptation, I still think "Ever After" is a better Cinderella story. As much as I like Cate Blanchett in this role, she is not as villainous as the original nor as good as Angelica Houston in the role in "Ever After"
For me, I do like "The Little Mermaid" but the original for me is one of my favorite films of all time because of the wonder of the sea in it and I do not think the new film reaches that height just as "The Lion King" does not either.
    But again, great list!

Your Weird Al reference in regards to 2019's The Lion King is spot-on! (Also, thank you for giving a little bit of love to the 70's Pete's Dragon, one of my favorite childhood films!)

The two times I saw 1955's Lady and the Tramp in theaters the audience laughed when Tony and Joe came out serenading the dogs, because it was kind of ridiculous, but after a second were like, "Well, it's a cartoon, so it's okay." I imagine it looking even sillier in live action.

It is wild in my brain whenever I try to reconcile that the director of "A Ghost Story" and "The Green Knight" also directed 2 medicore Disney movies. But hey if he can get that paycheck and make more excellent A24 movies I'm all for it.

Hi Dan! Sometimes, when I get a song stuck in my head, I listen to the whole song, and that helps it get out of my head.
It might sound strange, but it has worked for me. My brother is the one who recommends this when it happens to me, and I’m happy for the recommendation.

One thing that the original Jungle Book has over the remake is Louis Prima's vocals as King Louie for the song "I Wanna Be Like You." As much as I like Christopher Walken, his rendition could never compare.

Right on with Jungle Book. Of all the remakes/re-imaginings , this is the one that makes the most sense because it does justice to Kipling's stories. Story goes that Disney wanted the Beatles to voice the vultures in the first one,, but they had their pwn plans for an animated movie. Yellow Submarine, as it turned out.

The “Lion King is an animated film not live action” people drive me insane! The entire point is to replicate live action. Is it using animation? Yes, but if every piece of CGI makes a film animation then every modern film is animated! The intent matters when discussing these things. The ideal description is photo realism.

So glad that Cinderella ranked so high on your list as I really fell in love with it. I keep getting worried that it may rank low for you. I have yet the see The Jungle Book, but atm Cinderella is my favorite live action remake and part of why I have so much hope for the Snow White remake with Zegler. Everything from the casting to the romance to the freaking DRESS is flawless. The reveal of the dress seriously gave me goosebumps and it's also part of why the Beauty and the Beast remake fell flatter for me. Great ranking, Dan! I think I agree overall, at least with the ones I've seen.

They were sunk once they retitled it "Peter Pan and Wendy." "Peter Pan" was always Wendy's story; she's the one with an actual character arc. And when they made Peter the main character, they retitled it "Hook"!

While it's not the best remake, for me, Beauty and the Beast gets the distinction of having the best new songs. "How Can a Moment Last Forever" is a tender, subtle bit of emotion with Belle and Maurice. And although I don't like it as much as the Broadway production's "If I Can't Love Her," "Evermore" is a heart-rending powerhouse performed beautifully by Dan Stevens
Both these pieces stand proudly alongside the classic songs in the film, which is not something I can say for any of the original music in the other remakes

14:27-15:04 Hit the nail right on the head for me and my problem with a lot of how Disney likes to do much of their work these days. They are more concerned with appearances and patting themselves on the back for feeling like they are speaking to the wider world for their choices that they take away the charm of just letting it happen organically. Might be damning to say so, but I think of a great point Doug Walker made in his old Disneycember review of "Enchanted" and how the ending dragon fight just had her rambling off how this was so different and not how these stories usually go, and argued more effective change is just letting it happen rather than bringing attention to it to an obnoxious degree.

I’m still not really sure why people liked the Cinderella remake, I thought it was extremely boring. But I also hated Dumbo & Pete’s Dragon though too and those both seem to have supporters so idk, to each his own I guess.
I’m glad Aladdin got some props cause while I didn’t love it, I definitely found it one of the more enjoyable entries to watch. But personally aside from The Jungle Book, the only ones I kinda liked are the ones that really take the source material in the new direction like Maleficent and Cruella (which I know wasn’t included).

People really overrate that Jungle Book film. NONE of these films are anywhere near as good as the originals - all the charm and soul sucked out. The Lion King remake is the most creatively bankrupt movie ever made. The only film mentioned in this video that is worth watching is Cruella - that was surprisingly good, and no coincidence the one that was actually a new film instead of these lifeless copies.
