    I down sized a bit and went from my minchamp to a Swisscard Nailcare, its basically a small victorinox, but without the knife, and it goes into my slim wallet like a credit card. What I want to have handy is the pen, needle, tweezers, screw drive and sissor. Also no added weight to my key chain and don't like having more than two things to keep track of

    Great video. I feel the same. Tiny little alox does 90% and is convenient. If I'm going to the garden or doing chores or camping etc., then I carry a Leatherman wave. Beyond that, Like fixing an engine or doing carpentry, I hit the tool shed.
    But I can't stop collecting knives and multitools!

    The spoon tool can be used to wedge some tissue under a toe nail if you have an ingrown nail. Came up with this while watching my pedicure working on my toenails. She used a similar shaped tool.

    That "package opener" hook is also a repurposed blade from the old medical series. It's used as a cut & pick. It was designed to cut open the top seal on pill bottles and then you stick it down in the bottle and pick out the cotton packing. The "spoon" blade is also from the old medical series and was used for sorting pills or scooping fine amounts of medical powders.

      The "spoon" looks exactly like the spatulas we used to use in chemistry lab days back when I were a lad. It's perfect for dosing powders - from ground pepper to pyrotechnics. All you need with it is a lab scale and some of those spherical glass plate things. That'll make for the most precisely dosed seasoning... once. Then it's never coming out again 😅

    I finally ordered a Mini Champ Alox. I dig the ruler. I like your take on the pharmaceutical spoon,camera gear. Maybe chicago screws too. I enjoy my Deluxe Tinker and my Forester SAKs. I also have a SOG Powerpint that I enjoy but wish it was Victorinox materials and finish. 3.25" is a good size. Thanks for a thoughtful review Marcus.

      Agree but some of us rotate, for example today I'm carrying a LM Squirt PS4 in my 5th pocket (with a small torch) and a Boker folder clipped inside my main pocket, so I don't carry my Classic SD. Tomorrow I'm going on a bike ride so I will have a slightly more capable multitool albeit not a full size (SOG Microtoolclip) in my bike repair pouch, a Vic Farmer in my pocket, and the Classic SD in my 5th pocket. As long as you literally don't put your trousers on in the morning without your day's EDC in the pockets, and it's your routine like brushing your teeth in the morning, that system works, at least for me it does.

    It's really cool that they went ahead and made a medical model (like half the tools on this are from that one), but unfortunately that one was doomed from the start - it's not sterile. Even if it was on delivery, 10 seconds in your hand, and it's not. Unfold the tracheotomy blade - not sterile any more. And a blade thar isn't sterile WILL give your unfortunate patient a nasty infection as soon as you cut open their throat.
    So yeh, non-starter, but a really cool idea nonetheless and I'm glad those designs made it to the mini champ. We'll find new uses for all of them 😉

    It's quite easy to drill one open, remove/replace tools, and rivet together again using cut off brass nails. The champions last two tools are a waste of space, and you really want the 2 layer flathead of the Rover instead of the 1 layer

    I've just bought one of these. Probably not the most pragmatic decision as it is more expensive than the standard version and lacks a pen and tweezers (& infamous toothpick).
    But, the Alox finish does look and feel good and will retain that on a keyring as the plastic version will scuff up pretty badly over time.
    But the practical part of me does still say that having a pen would have been useful so I may pick up a standard at some point because they can often be found cheap.

      Did you do the mod yourself?

    • @oliverpolden
      @oliverpolden 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I did. I managed to find some nice scales with the Victorinox logo on them. Getting the tools in place was pretty frustrating with the springs making them pop out with the slightest nudge and I had to estimate what length to cut the brass pins so they could be hammered down to hold it all in place. I put tape over the scales to protect them and was very careful with the hammering both to make sure the pins ended up in the right place and to not bend or damage the scales. I wanted to end up with the pins flush but they stick out about 0.25mm, not 100% perfect but I’m still very happy with the result. I’m by no means a pro at that kind of stuff but I’m pretty good with my hands so if you think you’re up to it, you can probably do it. All tools open and close as before and it’s held together fine for a year now.

      Do it! Victorinox used to make an Alox Rambler and I really wanted to get one. They have come up now and again on eBay but I think always from the same seller who was charging around £170 for them. I bought the Alox MiniChamp in an effort to scratch that itch but it didn’t quite. I’m probably more satisfied having a modded Rambler because it’s more personal and unique and especially having the Victorinox logo on it, it doesn’t feel like a Frankenstein. I also got a Titanium pocket clip for the keyring for around £3 from AliExpress and I’m very impressed with it.

    6:43 What did he say here? Replace the toothpick with a "byro"?

    • @MarcusCreates
      @MarcusCreates  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toothpick with a biro. A biro is a word pen brand. You can get pens that for in the scales.

      László Biró patented the first commercially successful ballpoint pen.. hence it's colloquially called a 'Biro'; much like vacuum cleaners are often called 'Hoovers' (just one of the early producers of motorised vacuum cleaners)

    I can't live without my minichamp. Mine lives on my keys since I bought it 2 years ago. It replaced an old midnite manager that now lives on my car keys. Great video!

    I always carry a regular red Minichamp with me an it's priceless.
    The "spoon", as you call it it's for the cuticles of the finger nails.
    The tool that you use to open the packets (as I do as well) it's an orange peeler.
    I do prefer the regular one cause it's got the pen and in the other side I carry the toothpick. I already have an titanium tweezers in my EDC, then I found it more useful.

    Esatto!io uso minichamp normale(no alox)da 13 anni,purtroppo propio ieri si è rotto il meccanismo della penna e sembra non si possa cambiare.peccato,l’ho usata tutti i giorni a lavoro per 13 lunghi anni.

      Check out this video. You can change the scales out on the side with the pen if you buy a used one online. might not be worth it, but if you love the knife and have had it for 13 years it's probably worth the effort. th-cam.com/video/4dnNmXDMqzI/w-d-xo.html

      Guarda questo video. Puoi cambiare la bilancia sul lato con la penna se ne acquisti una usata online. potrebbe non valerne la pena, ma se ami il coltello e lo possiedi da 13 anni probabilmente ne vale la pena. th-cam.com/video/4dnNmXDMqzI/w-d-xo.html

      Grazie,non basta cambiare la guancetta!e’il meccanismo in plastica che sposta la penna ad essersi rotto e non è compreso quando le cambi le guancette. Apprezzo il tuo consiglio

      @@MarcusCreates I was being funny but I am also being serious haha. I love the orange peeler attachment on that model but the main blade is seriously not big enough to cut apples with. Seems they don't really make a model with the orange peeler and a knife big enough to cut fruit. Shame though because I need something like that executive model.

      @@carvedwood1953 makes sense to be honest now that you mention it. I wish Victorinox had a custom builder on their website so you could pay a bit more and create your own perfect Swiss Army knife.
