I don’t use the parcel hook normally, but it did get me out of a pinch. Years ago my friend told me to drive because she had a few drinks. She threw her keys but threw them into a drainage by accident. I hyper extended the parcel hook on my explorer, tied shoelaces to the key ring. With the hook, I was able to grab on to one of her key rings and was able to get the keys back up.

What a MacGyver feeling that had to be. I agree, you don't need the hook very often, but when you need it, it's awesome to have.

Tooth-pick: Not the best, but you wipe it off with a tissue paper and a bit of water.
Bantam combo tool: It's also a can-opener. Not a great one, but can be used for that.
*Explorer:* No, wasn't in the video, but arguably one of the best all-around Urban EDC Victorinox models out there. Definitely worth a look. (Also has the magnifier from the much thicker Swiss Champ. And, as you get older; that magnifier becomes a lot more useful.)

I bought my Cybertool shortly after release whilst traveling through Atlanta airport. All these years later I still use it all the time. I have other SAKs but that one is by far my favorite. I like your compact cybertool. It really does keep the most used stuff while losing the unecessary.

  • @shedlife1783

The compact ‘combi tool’ is a can opener, bottle opener, flat head, wire stripper and gets onto a cross head screw. Also pry (unofficially…). I EDC one and agree it’s great.

Great video Marcus! I'm carrying the cybertool m as my edc. I use the toothpick to clean the dust out of my cellphone charger and I usually disinfect it with some alcohol wipes after using it. I was sceptical about the little pliers but they have come in super handy. I have large hands so if I need to do some precision tasks it is perfect for me.

The issue with the Victorinox is that the uses are limited by your imagination. In the case of the hook, I used it a lot in the field, in camp, for countless uses such as removing a stake from the tent, I also used the pliers to carry hot things But at least for me, in an urban environment the queens are minichamp, compact, explorer, and cybertool (additionally they can be supplanted by a swis champ carried in the backpack).

I use the parcel hook to tighten and adjust boot laces, especially my snowmobile boots when I've got thick layers on and bending becomes harder. I've also used it to pull some wires through a small hole, admittedly only once. But it works really well for all kinds of boots.

As a Cub Scout leader, I gave the Super Tinker to my (8 y/o) Scouts because of the scissors. For me, the Compact and Explorer are my two favorite EDC SAK’s. I like the Explorer over the Huntsman because it includes an inline Phillips driver and scissors. To save the blade, I also like how the Victorinox can opener has a sharp edge; I find it perfect for opening packages. Shockingly, the awl and magnifying glass have proven more useful than I anticipated.
I used the awl the other day to modify a Gatorade cap to work on a water bottle rocket launcher built for 2L bottles. Similarly, I find the magnifying glass helpful for reading small printed serial numbers on products in an office setting.

Hi Marcus, I use the toothpick to open up zip ties, use the parcel hook to put the chain back on the bicycle (not often but thankful when it happens and I have the victorinox it feels so nice to not have dirty fingers)
My first knife was a Climber that I used for scouting. I donated that to my brother, I now EDC a cybertool 34 for work, and have a champ that stays at home. A jetsetter is a new addition to my keys as I don't want to EDC the Manager as it's been discontinued and prefer to keep that at home.
As a side note on your pen technique in the hook, put the end of it right against the hinge with the L shape facing down, it'll sit better in there than what you demonstrated in the video!

    • @MarcusCreates

I have the Swiss Champ since 1989 (older than the one shown). The pilfers are still good. I do not attempt to twist or pull on objects that are well beyond a short tool and not heavy duty. There is enough torque for small hex nuts. I hold wires that I solder and screws held in place when starting to tighten. The scissors have a screw and that has become loose and will not remain tighten. The later version has riveted blades as well as the hook on the back for parcels but doubles up to hold the pen for better grip or even blades from electrical saws for small tasks or in difficult to get to places needing something different to the wood cutting saw.
Although I have doubts about the fish scale remover it is a good pry bar for staples. All the other tools I have used. Main tool use are scissors, nail file (metal saw), blade, Philips screw driver and the insert small flat head for (eye) glasses and magnifying glass.
So my choice starts with mountaineer then ranger and champ.

Backstory / trivia on the Victorinox parcel hook tool:
In the early 1990's in Switzerland, it was introduced on pocket knives to aid in carrying old newspaper bundles that were criss-crossed wrapped with twine. The twine would bite into your hand when carrying heavy bundles and this was a tool asked by Swiss customers for their pocket knife to make it more comfortable to carry them to recycling. Recycling laws changed at that time in Switzerland compelling residents to recycle old newspaper, in addtion to recycling glass, aluminium, plastic bottles, etc. This is why the "hook" is relatively narrow, the optimal diameter for a few strands of twine...

I used the parcel hook yesterday at work to grab the lip of a thin seal from the inside-bottom and pull it back into place. 1st time I think I've ever used it for a "legitimate" purpose (besides the file on the back). Saved us ~$7.

Marcus, that is exactly the tool I'm after. The compact cybertool. Absolutely perfect combo. The only thing i'd change is to have a removeable blade. Maybe a utility blade or even a scalpel so that I can travel with it in my carry on. Otherwise, it's just what I would specify. Brilliant.

    • @MarcusCreates

    • @chrislange3462
      @chrislange3462 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I am pretty eager to see what victorinox comes up with for bladeless options and if TSA says anything. From what I have read, they still have issues with even the small scissors sometimes. On the removable blade front, I thought I read a recent policy where if something had removable blades, even if no separate blades are apparent anywhere, they still weren't allowing them. Would suck to run into that with a nice custom and no time to do anything about it.

    • @paulyb_tech
      @paulyb_tech 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@chrislange3462 Me too. I do carry a manager with the blade ground down in my carry on and I have so far only been stopped once coming back from Europe into the UK and when I demonstrated that the blade was blunt, they let me through. I would specifically buy Marcus's tool from SAK if it had a removeable blade for travelling. So go ahead SAK, take my money 😁

Yes, the Manager is much loved but now gone. Odd given that the Midnite version is available, during an era when everyone has a far better light on them at all times in the form of a smartphone. The toothpick is worth having, but never for putting into your mouth. It's a light-duty and non-marring pry tool, it's a way to grab and pull a nail nick of other tools you just can't open. It's a cleaning stick that can reach into places you can't reach with anything that isn't pointy (and it won't scratch most of them). It's a "toothpick" because of its size and shape, not for how you ought to be using it.

I got my first pocket knife at age 6 or 7 i think. Still have that, but i don't remember cuttin myself with it. (then again, that was over 35 years ago)
My first Vic was a sportsman at age 9 or 10. (economy line, so no tweezers, no toothpick, no keychain ring.) And i did cut myself with it, but not in the face though. I still have it
And a newer sportsman is still my mostly used EDC. (almost every day in my pocket, at least when i go to work)
The corkscrew i use for the little screwdriver (need glasses since my mid 20's) and for less noble things (it's great for getting stones out of the shoesoles and other simliar picking jobs. I don't drink, so the last time it was used to open a wine bottle was 20 years ago when i was kayaking with a group of people and some of them brought a wine bottle for the evening but they did not think about needing to get it open...So the nondrinker was the only one with a tool for it.😂)
The nailfile is a must for me. I work with electronics, electronics cabinets and cables. I can't even count how many times i tore a tiny bit of a fingernail off (or skin, but that's another story) on a sharp metal edge in those cabinets. And i hate it when a nail catches on clothing all the time, so i need the nailfile.
The flathead gets used a lot when i don't have a real screwdriver near me (no idea why in this day and age there are still so many flathead screws around in unexpected places) and to pry things.(But i have machanical sympathy, so i do know how much prying the knife might take without getting "hurt")
The canopener is nice for scraping things, or sometimes even to cut things or pry when the flathead is not thin enough to get in.
And i have used the awl a couple of times to actually make a hole into paper or cardboard to label something:
I am sure you know those wire bendy things cables are often boud together for shipping.
I have had a number of occasions where i needed to lable something at work and had no materaial to properly do it.
Solution: find some paper or cardboard (i do have a little pen with a pressurized cartridge on me at work), cut out a small piece with the knifeblade, "inscribe" the information, make a hole with the awl, and attach it to whatever needs "labled" with that wire thingy.
Voila, good enough for emergency use, until a proper self sticking lable can be printed and applied.
The toothpick i don't remember having ever used, but i see it as a small scratching device that won't harm metal or harder plastics rather than a toothpick.
(So i would most likely use it for things like that, not for food safe things though.)

Scissors are a must for me!
I've carried the Executive for something like 30 years. I've tried several others but like the Executive's form factor; two layer, 75mm, twin blades. After watching lots of video's, and hearing others worship of the Compact, I purchased one and have been trying it out. What I like about the Compact is the more robust blade and scissors. I miss the file on the Executive that also doubles as a phillips screw driver and also miss the small blade. I also really like the lighter weight of the Executive. The Compact has certainly earned a place in the rotation; but the Executive is still my go to EDC Knife. To be sure, habit plays a large part in my preference!
I will confess that of late the Compact has been my EDC of choice, I've come to appreciate the more rugged blade. What I miss is the nail file that the Executive has.

The best step up from the Classic Sd is the 74mm Executive. I do prefer the larger scissors and larger file on the 91mm Champ but then you have to get a mountaineer which is so close to the more useful ranger and more bloat with the Champ. Executive keeps it simple.
You could also make a pouch to store spares from the Swisscard to get larger scissors, the mail file/screwdriver and letter opener/blade and add longer pen, tweeters and toothpick from 91mm range creating a different form factor to the Swisscard.

So, I disagree with your opinion of the pliers. I know I'm never going to use them for anything close to hard/heavy use, but I also know that if I ever need to do that kind of stuff I'll have a proper set of pliers with me.
So, I basically made the same knife as you have, but with the pliers instead of the bit driver. Then obviously as it now wouldn't have a Philips, I swapped the corkscrew out for one.

Victorinox should have a third line of SAKs (next to the Spartan-based and the Tinker-based lines) and this could be the 3-layer model for it, the 4-layer one having pliers on top of it all.
