I'm an old knitter, 65 years, but only knitting socks for 10 years.
I'm dyslexic and didn't have much knowledge of TH-cam.
I'm an English knitter and chose Ann But's book.
That wasn't easy for me, but I was determined because my husband needed large soft socks after cancer treatment.
The first few pairs were difficult, but when I understood how the structure of the sock works, I knit socks as presents and my children all the time.
Budget is an issue, so I found Regia, which has been on the market since the 1800ds.
It is a German wool, 75% wool and 25% polly something.
My daughter has socks 10 years old and wears them all the time and no holes anywhere.
The older they get, the softer they get.
But she washes them on a hand wash cycle and dries flat.
Well known Norwegian knitters, Arne and Carlos also designs for Regia and for Rowan.

TY for this recommendation on the yarn, and it's durability! I always tend towards good, durable yarn - if I'm going to knit socks, I want them to last!

I love your channel. I have only listened for a short while and I have learned so much from our talks. I was researching blue-faced Leicester yarn for socks. Then I had to learn about the sheep; oh, my goodness, those sheep are gorgeous! I feel myself slipping down the "rabbit hole." LOL!

Haha! Glad I could encourage a knitting 'rabbit hole' 😁

I have used a tennis ball to darn with. Worked great.

Completely off topic, but what is that shawl on the mannequin, and what colours did you use?!

It's called Color Adventure Two - toniaknits.com/color-adventure-shawl-two/ and uses a self-striping yarn from Gauge Dye Works called Whisky in a Teacup.

I think using a light bulb is a very old method of darning. It's the way my grandmother darned, and the way I was taught in the 60's. I've never broken one. 😊

That's good to know! I think I'm going to have to give that a try!

@@NerdyKnitting you are welcome, love your videos. Definitely want to come to Ontario to see your shop. Blame Noelle and Kelly. They have turned me on to you and your sidekicks.

I have a Speedweve loom that I use for darning. It works fantastic!

Instead of using plastic grid , get plastic cutting boards from the dollar store , they and a sharpie make perfect templates. The best needle stoppers I use are short lengths of pony cord for small needles, they never come off. I bought some 3/8 inside diameter silicone tubing for larger needles.

Great tips, Christine! I'm definitely heading to the dollar store for plastic cutting boards - what a great idea!

We were taught to use a light bulb. The needle used for darning is worked by sewing the hole of your sock it makes it easy to see the stiches.

Wow! This was a lot of information! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! I'm tired just thinking about all the work you put into that blue top! It's beautiful! Were there any naughty words spoken during your process? 😊💜 Thx

Yes! I had just finished uploading this video when the power went out in Wednesday but we have power again today (Friday). Are you in a storm affected area too?

I grew up a hand knitter but never made many socks (I know only one would get done). I have now acquired a knitting machine and have been churning out socks with toes and heels in a secondary color. I know I am over knotting and weaving and am afraid I may be making them uncomfortable. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Great tips given here, I will try the gusset one as it sounds interesting.
Question: you said you learned to count stitches, this is something I have trouble with and wonder what methods are out there.

i realize that you’re taking a break from sock knitting but i have a tutorial request that does not exist *ANYWHERE* so maybe i made this up.😂
⭐️ *if possible* can you please make a tutorial called *how to knit socks flat and in the round* ? specifically i mean you would knit the *cuff with DPN’s* , then switch needles to knit the *foot/german short row heel/toe part flat* , and close the socks with the *bickford-something-or-other* stitch. OR knit the *toe up flat* and THEN *switch to DPN’s for the cuff* and once again, close up the sock with that special stitch. thanks so much!

Sorry, I can't guarantee a video on that topic! I might look into it at some point but can't make any promises.
