Happy to see my native place, Kumbakonam. Long back this route was MG from Chennai to Rameswaram. In my childhood I travelled between Chennai and Kumbakonam multiple times in MG trains. Even overnight passenger trains were running to Chennai in this route. Thanjvur Chennai fast passenger and Trichy Chennai fast passenger (Train No. 110/109) were the 2 famous overnight train. Apart from that Cholan express, Boat mail express. Even chord line trains like Sethu express and Kollam Chennai Mail ran via Kumbakonam as chord line was converted to BG.
Just completed our native trip to KUTHALAM, and visited all major temples in Kumbakonam, Mayavaram, Chidambaram and Tanjore. What a striking co-incidence, i took chozhan sunday morning. The entire stretch is a beauty of its own!
Thanjavur to Trichy parallel BG line laid in around 1995. On that time few coaches of Rockfort express extended till Thanjavur. In 2004 during Mahamaham festival, Thanjavur Kumbakonam line was converted to BG. Rockfort express was further extended to Kumbakonam and ran till 31st August 2013. Out of 24 coaches only 13 coaches will go till Kumbakonam. Once Uzhavan express was introduced on 1st September 2013, era of Rockfort express gone. But Villupuram Mayiladuthurai gauge conversion was completed in May 2010 itself. So for 3 years (2010 - 2013) Kumbakonam had both Rockfort express and direct trains.

IF I remember correctly Mangalore Express and RockFort Express departing from Chennai Egmore stop at Mambalam STATION FOR 2 Minutes. I once travelled from Tambaram to Kumbakonam in the year 2005 By Kumbakonam Fast Passenger. I think From Dec 2006 Tambaram to Kumbakonam Meter Gauge route was closed for Broad Gauge conversion. The Sunrise view you showed at 4 roads Junction Kumbakonam is simply superb. I am happy that TTE Sir asked the Unreserved passengers who had boarded sleeper class coaches to either pay fine or deboard and travel in General coach. Sleeper Class passengers are paying more to travel comfortably. Fully loved and enjoyed this Digital travel with you. Top class video coverage as usual.

Ajay, during 80s when I travel in trains in this sector the only train from Egmore was Sengottai Passenger and I travel to Vaitheeswaran temple next stop to Sirgazhi. It was from Egmore and still have nostalgia on those trains reserved and unreserved 😅

Before BG. This train start from tj at 5.30 pm. Kmu 6. 15. And it will reach at TBM at same 3.30 am. VM they will change the loco for electric. And 9.30 pm at kmu boat Mail from rmm. Now its Sethu exp. Becs im from KMU. This is up to 1998 or 1999. Those are golden days. Only 2 trains in night.

@Transit bites Let me tell you about my trip to Kumbakonam from Bangalore, in October 2002. Back then, there was broad guage only till Thanjavur. ANY ROUTE beyond that up until Nagapattinam or Mayiladuthurai was meter guage.. Our train was "Mysore Thanjavur exp". We get off at Thanjavur, walk to the meter guage platform, board the meter guage train that goes from Tiruchi to Nagapattinam or Thanjavur to Mayiladuthurai... Kumbakonam is of course, in that route and we used to get off. When the broad guage got extended to Mayiladuthurai, the train was converted into Mysore Mayiladuthurai exp :)

We get off at Thanjavur, walk to the meter guage platform, board the meter guage train that goes from Tiruchi to Nagapattinam or Thanjavur to Mayiladuthurai... Kumbakonam is of course, in that route and we used to get off.
When the broad guage got extended to Mayiladuthurai, the train was converted into Mysore Mayiladuthurai exp :)
