I'm yet to find anyone who agrees with me, but this is actually my favorite non-federation Trek design. I just love the style of this ship.

Its is an interesting design, but my favorite has to be the borg cube, its utilitarian.
Just gotta look in the right places. The Kumari is a beautiful ship.
I used this ship in STO until the Tier 6 ships came out, it was definitely a favorite of mine.
I love the Kumari, its an awesome design.
Personally however I liked Vulcan ship designs much, better, they where completely unique, stylized and had both presence and grace. Granted that huge circular warp drive was way over exposed, but its such a catching piece, that it can't be denied.
I hope you do videos for the Vulcan ships in the near future
One of ST: Enterprise stronger points was ship design, I loved the Kumari is easily my favourite non-star fleet ship
Whenever I saw the Kumari class, I can't help but be reminded of the Drazi Sunhawk from Babylon 5.

Yeah, I've always adored this design and the Andorians are my second favorite Trek race- mostly due to all of the care and attention Enterprise place on World building them.
Even if this focus came as a massive detriment to the Tellarites :/
If the series had lasted longer, we probably would have seen more of the Tellarites.

While not my favorite ST series, the presence of the Andorians greatly increased it in my esteem. For awhile, they were my favorite ST extra-terrestrials.
@@snoproblem I always thought of the Andorians as a joke - Star Trek: Enterprise changed my view of them.
Enterprise somewhat sucked, but, due to them we really got to know the Andorian race. Seemed all the other ST series ignored them.
It's not my favorite overall series but I do love the final 2 seasons and the Andorian stuff is the best part of the first 2 seasons. The aesthetic of the era is also my favorite. I love the NX interior and the alien designs like thism
@@TerranGuy93 Oh, Enterprise isn't perfect, but it holds a special place in my heart. The Andorians, especially Shran, were the best part. Today, I think DS9 is my favourite series.
I love the look of this ship. I always looked forward to seeing Andorians on Star Trek Enterprise episodes just to see ships of this class.

Star Trek Enterprise is where this vessel is first seen, I think it's in the third or fourth season. It's on Netflix.

Great looking ship
One of my favorite ships ever and favorite from Enterprise.
Always wanted to see a video about this class. The Andorians were always such strong characters but especially in Enterprise, where their interstellar prowess saved everyones behind. From this presentation they seem to be capable of a "Great Leap Forward" past the other planets.
Definitely one of my favorite ship designs. Hope they show up in future Star Trek shows.
This is one of the few star trek designs i have seen that look like they could take a beating.
I agree. So many Federation ships although pleasant to look at also seem incredibly flimsy with their skinny necks and super outstretched/exposed warp nacelle pylons.
I'd put that down to Star Fleet's "We're explorers not soldiers" peacenik attitude, going out of their way to design Federation ships that were elegant and graceful looking, while emphasising them as vessels of peaceful exploration. Contrast that, against the Defiant, Sabre and the Steamrunner classes, with their compact, low profile hulls and solid, boxy construction. These were ships built for war and even after the Dominion wars were over, newer ships like the Sovereign and Intrepid class, still retain some of those elements, having lost the skinny neck and the pylons are much shorter and less fragile looking.
MMMMmmmmmaybe so, but look at the Galaxy Class. That thing is nothing less than a Battleship whatever you want to call it but is designed with inherent weaknesses like the pylons/neck and a large civilian presence. Either make it a warship or make it Gene's original vision. Not 50/50.
weldonwin Even if you are making an exploration ship, they know they are going to get into trouble. There are a lot of hostile people and aliens out there. Not only that, but it also helps with normal things. A ship that doesn't separate itself in four parts attached by sticks is going to be more structurally resistant, which is good for everything.
Sometimes I'm surprised that the two engine nacelles in the enterprise don't snap off and crash on the soccer when they accelerate.
The Saucer sections on all the early Starfleet ships, also presents a huge target. An attacker, coming at them from above or below, effectively has this big circular target to shoot at and if coming from above, the bridge forms an convinient bullseye, dead centre in the top of the saucer.
That said, its not like Starfleet is alone in these kinds of design sins. The Klingon D7 cruisers also have that long skinny neck and the original Romulan Warbird also presented a huge broad target from above and below.
Another excellent Spacedock technical overview. Come on people, he's not asking for a lot, for this kind of quality.
He has created a great catalog across the Sci-Fi realm, its a big universe, and frankly, I want to see where he goes next.

I've always loved the Kumari, it's sleek, elegant and powerful in one neat package.
You know... that's one of the most underdeveloped aspect of StarTrek...
What happened to all of the other races ship designs.
I would understand that starfleet mostly had priority in ship design.
But surely the other races would have had some major influence...
I can't believe that the general SF design is the "ultimate one"...

I think that's where fan fiction short films would shine the brightest.... If paramount would let it happen...
We would have gotten the Daedalus-class if it weren’t for the studios being too worried that it was too different. (Which is kind of the point if you go a century before known conventions.)
Other races kept building their ships but the reason we see starfleet ships mostly is because starfleet lead the way in exploration and military. Being the farthest from home would lead them to getting into the most conflict. We know from Daniels that Vulcan and Andoria kept building ships well into the 27th century. Those ships served mostly in a police role rather than navy
Agreed. I'd like to see more Vulcan ships like the d'kyr type and Surak class in starfleet.
We know from The Gambit that the Vulcans maintain a separate intelligence agency from SFI. Perhaps the other races still use their pre-Fed navies as national guard units. Sisko's line "Betazed's OWN planetary defenses are obsolete and under manned" would suggest Fed worlds shared the burden of their own defense.
Before Enterprise came out, I always just imagined that the classic Starfleet hulls were a mix of the founding worlds' best-integrateable ideas. Probably at least the tech's a joint effort all along.
Something I have always wondered if there was a cannon reason for it but why did the Federation go with the saucer ships when they had access to so many other types from the other members of the Federation.
Kind of like the navy today. Many countries opt to use standardized ship designs in their fleets to allow for greater resource and maintenance support even when they have their own domestic designs. Star fleet was a unified fleet started by earth primarily since as captain archer put it, humans comprise to get things done so their ship designs were more adaptable and flexible compared to domestic ships.
But I agree with you it seems like each race would still maintain their own domestic ship building and designs for greater security in case the alliance fails or to simply maintain their ship building capabilities. We should’ve (wanted lol) gotten more ship times in star trek lol (dang tv show budgets lol)
Nice STO music in this video! While I do like this ship, nothing beats the look of the Romulan Bird of Prey, IMO.
Well, if you're serious about taking recommendations there are a few ships I can think of:
The Milano-guardians of the galaxy. (this would be a good Tie-in to the new movies release!)
The prowler class oni stealth ship- Halo . (probably my favorite ship from the series next to the spirit of fire, and yet, it's only appeared on screen once, So sad.)
The moldy crow-Star Wars. (I was so heartbroken when she crashed in dark forces two, it be great to see her get the love she deserves!)
The helldiver.... cruiser?- Helldivers. (give up, you have no hope of finding any information on this ship, or any ship or fighter from the series. I speak from experience, in fact, I know so little about that ship class I don't even think it has a name! I admit, I've mostly included it on this list as a dare of sorts. But if you want to prove spacedock's "any spacecraft, any Sci-fi" Motto..... here's your brass ring! Challenge accepted?)
I've always loved the aesthetic of the Andorians.
Used to be a wicked ship in STO. Wing cannon overload on an Alpha run was basically a one shot kill in PVP

This is one tough little ship. In STO, this was the second bundle I ever bought. the Charal Escort is a very heavy hitting escort with a huge capacity to spam those cannons. It will drop a Borg Cube to 0hp FAST when properly set. But it's a glass cannon. It will die just as fast as it will drop enemies. It is a beautiful ship.
My love for this ship is nothing compared to the Odyssey dreadnought cruiser or the Chronos Temporal Dreadnought though....hehehehe
I used to have the Eaglemoss model of this ship gave it to a friend of mine who's collecting the Federation and it's allies.
There is one ship I would love to see featured here…The Cygnus, from Disneys first real blockbuster movie, The Black Hole. A gothic cathedral in space, hanging just outside of a black hole’s Event Horizon, that ship inspired a young me to start writing my own sci-fi stories.

To be honest, I'd love it if we got a new Star Trek show centered around an updated version of the Kumari. Imagine if those five particle beam arrays were updated and replaced with massive Spinal Phase Lances such as employed on the Galaxy-X class ships, and covered in numerous missile pods, torpedo tubes, and starbase-type phasers. Especially if the entire ship is massively scaled upward into the Federation counter to Dominion Dreadnoughts, Voth Worldship's, and other such vessels. Might even carry several wings of Valkyries or an updated Peregrine, as well as several Defiant and Prometheus class ships. With something like three-six Warp Cores, and Transwarp capability, this ship would be a monster to deal with. Designed as a multi-role vessel, the ship could also be used as a gargantuan evacuation transport to ferry whole colonies to safety if need be.
Could spend most of the first season trying to avoid showing it's true firepower and talking people down, but in the end it effectively solo's a hostile fleet numbering a couple million or so. Might get seriously damaged, but it's Starfleet, they can repair it.

My main issue with this ship is that it doesn't contribute to the lineage of Federation starships. In my mind, Federation starships and technology would be an amalgamation of all of its members and given that Earth in canon is the least advanced member it would stand to reason that humanity could learn a lot from Andorian starship design.
An elegant warship, I love it. I think is even more beautiful than federation ships.

I like the Andorians. their ships are very militaristic and they are a match for Klingons. These ships were used my civilians and pirates after they feel out of service, but their armor was upgraded. based on comics

Where do you get your statistics? Because I find it somewhat dubious that the Kumari should reach Warp 8, when Vulcans could only peek at Warp 7.5. Vulcans afterall are supposedly the most advanced race in local space at the time. Further, I always figured the Kumaris were a match not for the much larger Vulcan D'Kyr, but the Vulcan Suurok-class, which is of similar size. But apart from those inconsistencies I like your video. Few People seem to care about ST: Enterprise ships. And while I find the D'Kyr much cooler and sleeker, ist nice to hear about Commander Shran's ship.
This Andorian's ship design is interesting to say the least.

There's something I dont get... all these Trek ships have shields and "armor plating", which I guess makes sense in case the shields fail. Ok, fair enough. But, if there's enough need for armor plating on the hull cause the shields fail often enough to make them useful, then... why the Hell have windows on the hull? It seems like that totally negates any armor benefits in those areas. Why not just have solid armor all around? If the people in side really need a view, they can have large screens that look like windows... inside the armor plating. This is very poorly thought-out design.
DeusExAstra Windows are not always really weak, and it's not like all the ships are designed with solely combat in mind. Really though I think its because it looks nice ^^"
That is the logic behind the bridge having a view-screen as opposed to a window in the Prime Timeline, but try telling the reboot that. I do wonder if, since windows for Starfleet vessels are transparent aluminum, they would benefit from polarizing the hull? In Star Trek Online however, there is to my recollection a ship where the windows get covered with ablative armour upon entering combat. The out-of-canon reason is to make a ship scale.
I think in the case of the federation, it is mainly due to the design focus on exploration as opposed to a purely combat vessel. But mainly, its due to production artists license.

The Romulans employed attack shuttles as well as the Jemm H'Darr, a few other races as well I believe. But accuracy of ship mounted Phasers, Disruptors, and ship mounted point defense weaponry made them extremely ineffective.
I would expect real human ships to look more like this than a saucer.
