  • Kids get the message: one online mistake is the end of the world. But we all mess up. How should we teach young people to deal with it?
Keegan Korf is a lead teacher of digital citizenship for the Omaha Public Schools and Common Sense Media. She works in Omaha and across Nebraska, talking to students, teachers, parents and community members about digital citizenship, media literacy and empowering children to use technology to its full potential.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. This was an amazing talk and very relatable! I think so many of us need to be reminded that everyone makes mistakes and that when a mistake is made, it can always be remedied. This is such a unique time we are in with all the technology available to us at any age. I think we all could learn something from this. Great talk!

Awesome job Keegan! So proud of you. Helping guide our kids through proper social media use is so vital to helping them be safe and responsible digital citizens. Loved when you told parents to create an account and let your kids teach you how to use the filters. Staying connected online and in person is vital to the parent/child relationship. Thanks for having the guts to share.

Thank you for sharing your story with the world! I could not agree more about how all parents should limit their children's screen time and how they should be monitored to some extent. Looking around in todays the world, it seems to me that the only thing I see is people texting and driving, children or even parents on their phones while family members sit right in front of them, and people so involved in their phones they don't see what is right in front of them. Social media is slowly taking over our world and it is the parents job to make sure their kid is knowledgable about the consequences and even the positive insights to social media. I love how you told parents to take a step back when their child does something shocking because they themselves were like that to their parents as well. Your talk could be very helpful to other parents who are going through some of the stories you shared and could even help young adults understand one day too.

This is a huge topic for adults and students in this high tech high social media society we live in. Thanks for sharing an honest look at how it has effected you, and for giving good pointers on how to handle this with students and our own kids. It is new territory for us all, but the opportunities it provides and the positive aspects it can spread are more important than running scared from it or ignoring it. Loved the Snapchat slide...hilarious!

I truly enjoyed listening to this talk! It was very interesting to listen to your history with social media and then apply it to raising children in the world of technology and social media. It seems as if every generation partakes in poor decisions during their teenage years, but it is different for each generation. In today's case, the poor decisions tend to be made online or are linked to online sources. However, this doesn't mean that technology and social media should be feared, it just means some other precautions must be taken to keep today's children in check and safe. Great talk!

Joseph, I really enjoyed this video. Kids and teenagers are not aware of the dangers of what they post online. This is a great video to show kids and teenagers on how to be conscious of what they post.

Parenting? Easiest thing, ever! My daughter is super close. We have been having so much fun together throughout her childhood and she's really smart. Every time she comments on something she found, I see that her judgment is excellent. She hardly ever posts. She hates TikTok and thinks that it's a waste of time. She doesn't need to get "followers". She exchanges on topics she's interested in. I'm quite satisfied with her education ☺
