I just picked up the Ozark trail one and it is surprisingly well made. That twang says it'll be a reliable tough steel although possibly soft. The thickness makes up for it. When you're chopping thin stuff you want to curve your blade as you hit in the direction of the top of the plant as if to grip and pull. The tension makes for very easy chopping of floppy stuff.
Can always count on entertaining and informative content from you Jeff. You're one of the first channels I subbed to in '09 and you've kept active the entire time. Not many can say that.
hey Jeff random question, if you were splitting wigs instead of bushwhackin would you prefer the thinner faster one or heavier stiffer one with build in sound effects?
I own both as well, the Ozark Trail was sharper in sections out of the box but all along the blade were scratches most likely an error when it was grounded into shape and felt more solid. I got the Ozark trail with a usable edge in about 5 minutes with a bastard file and smoothed it out with an aluminum oxide stone from Dollar Tree. The Harbor freight the negative to me was the rear serrations gimmick, it's good to score wood to lash things quick but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone unless you have a bastard file (which will cost more than the machete), grinder, or a variety of sandpaper grits in the double digits then work your way up since it doesn't even have an edge at all just a slight profile on a slab of steel. I spent an hour watching youtube videos while running the bastard file against till I got what I consider a minimal edge and then hit it with aluminum oxide stone for about another 10 minutes. I don't know how much time they wasted on putting the serrations on it, they would have been better off doing a usable grind on the edge to make it immediately functional vs the effort put in to add a poorly done saw gimmick. I think they both are worth the price, but I'll have to rate the Ozark trail the better machete because it was ready to go out of the box and made better with a little work. The Harbor freight machete would be worthless to a novice who don't know how to put an edge on it, and might piss off a few new owners who expect it to be ready to go as soon as it was purchased.
Dude when I lived in SoCal (shit hole state, comifornia, whatever) I use to get machetes from my sons grandpa who is from El Salvador and he would buy them every time he went for almost nothing in USD and I have to say by far the best damn machetes I've ever used came from South America. Go figure the native people from South American jungle territory make the ABSOLUTE BEST MACHETES. They cost like $1.50 and they were always made from leaf springs =high carbon steel and you could beat the ever living hell out of them and they would just keep going. They either had no brand or were Imacasa and they were seriously awesome.
Pine trees don't flourish in the MidWest, unlike in the Rockies with the aspen trees. I wondered why I didn't see that many. Then I found out about bagworms! They don't exist west of the Rockies. 🤔
I have a thin Cambodian sword that wacks through weeds like that really good. Not shire if they designed it to wack weeds like that? But I had this sword since the late 1980s it has a wooden sheath that matches the handle.
Thise are some nice performing machetes. For added reach attach a machete blade to an axe handle. I've found some machetes at flea markets for around that price so a new one for the same cost is a great deal.
Thanks for another informative video. I have the exact same situation as you where I have cut a walking path through some of the woods on my property and keep it cleared out with my riding mower except for all the weeds and stuff that grows over the path which needs to be cut occasionally... Neither of my machetes have the saw on the back which looks to be a welcome addition so I don't have to carry a separate saw or larger limb cutters
you waited to almost 3:14 seconds before you used the word ''interesting.'' HAHAHA that has to be a record, just joshing you, very big fan, keep them vids coming!!!
@@cutlerylover that is my favorite word as well and my wife and kids tease me about it. We all watch your videos together and my daughter pops off, hey this is why dad always says, "interesting" lol. Damn kids hahaha
I'm surprised a bit. That current $5 Walmart machete sings much better that the $7 ones did. It doesn't quite sing as well As my Imicasa K18 bolo, that thing sings like nobodies business. It sings better than expected though, the Harbor freight machete sounds dead. I would not touch the HF machete.
Golden rod is such a terrible allergen. I think after tree pollen it's def golden rod. Got a lot of them thingers popping up in all the fields without corn in it around here. Again, don't live but a few counties from ya. That being said you could make your own machette from insulation blades.
As much as the tool matters, it’s more in who wields it. I could have the nicest machete in the world and you would still run circles around me with the Walmart machete.

all the dead trees around the path stay there

Feel like I’m in a first person video game lol
If you mute the audio you feel like you're playing farcry
Wouldn't some pruners be more efficient? If you're just cutting back the overhang?
its as effective just takes more time and bending...less fatiguing though lol...
Hey Jeff,
Looks like fun! Just a walk through nature with a couple badass affordable machetes! :)
Thanks for sharing.

Jeff can you compare hatchets like from diff stores I know the ones a walmart are like 7 10 dollars.
There can be only one!
Nice video .may be your next on field test are the cold steel machete vs tramontina

cheap machetes may still cut well, but they don't usually last long.
I just got one today, time for a wack threw some brush and other stuff! Nice video!
I like you to do a comparison on Ontario machetes to Cold Steel Machetes.
Nice trail/property!
the Walmart Ozark Trail one is not good. The handle becomes lose and the blade flexes too much. It just isn't made to last.
Great video
You should keep the white goalie mask handy in case you come across trespassers.
It's hard to get rid of dead wood............I've been married to her for years.
Mi machete esta mi libertad. The sawback looks like it took inspiration from the sawback pioneers sword.

I agre although I happen to own several folding wood saws its nice to have it on the spine as long as its functional...

I'm fairly sure I threw my Walmart one away. I just couldn't trust the weird floppy steel. I don't think it worked for what I got it for.
