This was a fantastic video! I have struggled throughout my life about style, what I like vs what is deemed fashionable! And at 63 I now have the strength of character and confidence to pick not only what suits me but also what I like…no matter if it’s fashionable or not! I like to look modern, but it doesn’t have to fit into the cookie mold of what’s in fashion for this year.
You’re absolutely right about the essence! I’m actually the opposite of you, whenever I wear something with a more toddlercore vibe, I feel childish, whereas I feel most myself in classic, tailored pieces. It’s so interesting how our essence shapes our choices when it comes to personal style!
Yes, exactly! You would think any person would be able to pull off any style BUT somehow we each have our own vibe that harmonises more easily with one style over another! 💃✨️
I've not thought of it in those terms, and when she said it, I realized that having had my color analysis done created so much congruence and ease in shopping. Still on my style journey, but it was a huge help.
@@gracecarter8734 it's magic!! congruence is like doing personal style on easy mode ✨would love to get my colours done some day to help me with that process of elimination!
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen on personal style, you hit the nail on the head on a number of key elements for me. Fantastic Alanna, thanks for sharing these insights.
when I think about it, my style definitely changes with the seasons. Maybe not all aspects but I noticed that now in autumn I like to wear a lot of lace and black, jewel tones and also more formal clothes than in summer. It's kind of calming to know that I don't have to decide what my true style is because like all things it changes.
I love the idea of lace and black in Autumn, and also jewel tones (dreamy). It gives so much more room to breathe and be adaptable, embracing the changing nature of all things. You expressed it so well! 💖
I love your approach. The rural and coastal vs urban aspect is very relevant to me. My singing / church / town capsule doesn’t really overlap much with my outdoor clothing, which needs to withstand mud, sand, salt air, cat and dog attention… I think it’s fair enough to have that separation, though, because I’m both ethereal and outdoorsy, and my very different clothes are all used regularly.
Yes, absolutely - they all get used in different facets of your life, which makes them all necessary! I always consider that quote from William Morris - "have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful" 💃🐈⬛🐕
Totally agree!! I used to wear gray or black dress pants and a mock turtleneck in bright colors as a sort of uniform. I felt AWFUL in that outfit. Eventually I learned, like you, I need softer clothes!! Tailored, masculine clothes (like a classic trench coat) do NOT work on me. I feel so much better inside and out now that I understand what works on me. Long story short - lost my hair to chemo a few years ago and it grew back curly!!! The curly hair looks better on me too!!!! 😊
Oh my gosh that's wild about your hair! Mine was waay more curly when I was pregnant, bizarre how it can change like that 😊 I'm so glad it came back for you with a new personality and one that fits you ❤
This was a fantastic video, I agree with the 4 seasons, I can relate to changing my clothing preferences in the different seasons.. and unconsciously in the monthly cycle.. my choices vary, it was a lightbulb moment. Can we just briefly talk about your hair.. with all your newer videos I almost gasp .. your hair is stunning, you look amazing, and this yellow/mustard top.. are you sure you're not a warm type? Have you tried autumn coloring ? It may be just lighting and camera lens, but I can really see you in browns, reds and greens Anyways, your videos are quickly becoming my number one, I must watch this immediately type. Thank you
@iwonakiely1915 thank you! My hair definitely has its own personality 😆💃 she's a fiesty one (I need more styling tips, haha) - I believe I am somewhere between a soft Autumn and a soft Summer. I can never quite decide firmly which side, which I just merrily use in my favour and enjoy colours in that range 🥰✨️ thank you so much for being here! Chats like this always light up my day x
What a wonderful video. I love the demonstration of sharp classic making some women feel old and vice versa soft or girly making some women feel childish. I have felt this so many times but was unable to put into words the why behind it. Thank you for that.
I am also adapting my style to each season, because I want to be and feel in harmony with nature/ my surroundings. I love wearing black all year around, but in winter, I can really lean into wearing the color as a base. I like to wear pops of color though, like red, purple or blue. To me, they symbolize the remnants of the other seasons. When it gets warmer and lighter outside, I want to get and feel lighter and brighter as well.
I appreciate using ‘congruence’ as an intention! Honoring the cycles within and without, knowing oneself, considering one’s lifestyle. In the past few years, I changed profession, my body changed, and my family and I moved from city to rural. I loved my previous professional clothes, worn on university campus, in the city. But they do not work in the country on wooded property! Or, at least, they are not congruent. 😊 I appreciate being able to put words to some of the challenge I’ve been feeling around this for quite awhile! I love feeling put together, and I’m beginning to hone in on pieces that still feel intentional but are also a bit more rugged to handle gravel roads and hilly inclines!
This is the perfect example! My style transition is similar, moving over a few years from urban to rural. I love an English Countryside vibe for inspiration, it can pull either quite classic or a little bit eccentric depending on your mood 💃✨️
So much wisdom here. I do a lot by the wisdom of cycle syncing, including dress and shop. For me it's not that my personality is altered by my phase, just my energy - and my style reflects that
Yes, I can absolutely relate to that. Shopping - now THERE'S an interesting one. I wonder how many impulse purchases have been made by women feeling on top of their game during Inner Summer ... or feeling like everything looks dreadful in the dressing room because they are Luteal and sensitive 🧐🧐🧐 such a good observation!!!
This is a great perspective! I currently feel pulled between many things in establishing my personal style. I know that my essence and personality are more playful and bohemian but as I inch closer to 50 I want to feel a bit more refined and polished. I also split my time between working from home and out of the house; as well as a combo of more urban and rural living. It's like I am suffering from fashion whiplash I guess! It makes it hard to find congruence and reconcile it all.
OMG fashion whiplash 😂 I shouldn't laugh because I do feel the frustration here. Let's take Princess Diana as an example. You can just imagine her: on a yacht one day, then making a public appearance in a gown and tiara, then tramping through mud with the dogs in the English countryside. There will always be different occasion which demand different 'uniforms' or styles of dress. Certain seasons of life will demand a larger or more varied wardrobe to accommodate all of our activities and duties. At those times, we could try to establish a common thread which makes us feel like ourselves no matter the occasion - how we do our hair and makeup, whether we wear any signature jewellery or accessories, or simply just remembering WHO WE ARE underneath our clothes and honouring her and what she desires in this moment. Personal style is certainly complex, but knowing how we want to feel, or the vibes we are reaching for will help us make those tiny micro-adjustments towards that style goal. Refined / polished vs bohemian / playful - what could these things birth together? 🥰
@@AlannaLightheart I agree! And while it might take me a little bit longer to settle on a more distilled viewpoint that combines all my worlds, I feel like it gives me the option to lean in a lot of directions and find what truly feels right for me. It’s bound to be unique! 😉
Second comment as I was watching a different video & you mentioned what we are drawn toward & how we want to feel…. I think the «French style» capsule is very popular because one wants to feel elegant & feminine. However - when I try it, I don’t connect that way at all. It feels too «safe» and too rigid(?) somehow - being clear here that this is my inner feeling when I have tried it… other women may connect just fine & enjoy lovely elegant feelings. So the idea of connecting to something we want to FEEL within the seasons… and perhaps that is what pulls us toward congruence? Very random thinking here… but I feel like there is some kernel of truth in this somewhere for me to mull over & find. ❤️
I am nodding along as I read your comment 🤭 I have had similar experiences. It is absolutely how YOU fell, how YOU connect to those clothes and styles - and absolutely taking the inspiration from that to see where it takes you. It's why 3 women can choose the same style words but look utterly different - because their inner understanding and connection to those words is different (along with their colouring and body shapes and all that other stuff as well.) So, so happy to be sparking new thoughts and epiphanies!! This is my raison d'être, my ikigai 💖
Love the new haircut! You look lovely. This information was also very helpful and really speaks to the importance of using your clothes and styling a variety of ways rather than buying more and more.
Yes exactly I live on the river surrounded by nature in a small community very laid back soft life and I dress that way low maintenance relaxed and effortless look 🥰
I think essence is one of the biggest factors in dressing authentically. I don't mind the fact that I don't have what I would consider a 'signature style'. I feel like I dress with variety within a few different style uniforms but that allows me to honour the different facets of myself that I'm drawn to on different days. Some days I'm retro/preppy, some days boho/feminine, some days tailored/androgynous. I have a gamine essence so there's usually always a playful element in my outfits. I definitely can't do vampy looks or the classic look- both of these feel either too overtly sexual on me or too boring/frumpy. Ironically a lot of the content I'm drawn to watching is from TH-camrs who focus on minimalist capsule wardrobes. Even though I'm realistically a maximalist in my wardrobe & love the whole styling process, I find it fascinating to watch this minimalist content. This was another brilliant video. Thank you for always coming up with such great material ❤
Thank you so much for being here and sharing your thoughts! I love to get into the nitty gritty and hear you perspectives as well! Gamine is such an interesting essence, because it also seems to hold that creative tension and thrive on a bit of juxtaposition as well - like you said, some days feminine, others androgynous. I think it can also be beneficial to have TH-camrs with a different style or philosophy to our own - either just for entertainment or fascination, but there's always something to learn and understand there, too! 💖
Thank you! This video was so insightful. I have become increasingly intrigued by my cyclical energy levels and I can see how they impact my style choices.
VERY enjoyable video with rather a bit of food for thought! I really like the seasonal idea & need to mull it over a bit. Living on a farm …. there is a congruence to seasonal shifts in that the cycle is the same each year… but I love the way you portrayed it as a season of life recurring cycle. That was new & very interesting to think about. I wonder how Granny Weatherwax would dress over the seasons & yet, in the books, each of her coven is of a different stage of life…. I think I like the idea of some classic charm in clothes vs just «classic». Classic but with what men are calling a Heritage vibe, yet perhaps with some feminine touches to provide the charm? So yes - this has been on my mind & I am going to have a long think about seasonality and congruence to place as I live on a farm in Norway. 🥰
Food for thought - enjoy! I hope it sparks some new ideas! Exactly what you said about Granny Weatherwax - she has congruence in her life with where she is and how she carries herself - until she moves to the city for a while and starts wearing red under her cloak! She adapts to a new place, a new pace of life for a time. (the book where she takes Esk to be a Wizard at UU, think it was Equal Rites) And we all have seasons of life as well.. there are so many ways to apply the 4 seasons / congruence 💖
Excellent video! I was just thinking this past month about my style journey and the concept of "appropriateness", which you so eloquently defined as "congruence". I find myself dressing more formally in winter, and in a much more relaxed and carefree manner in summer. My outfits do have an effect on my demeanor. I'm more city, and I have looked out of place when I lived in the country or in communities with high levels of retirees. I also like the concept of dressing "seasons"; it makes sense :)
It's so true - having clothing in context with its surroundongs totally changes the vibes. Fascinating to see that relationship between clothing and mood as well 💖✨️
I really like this video & your sensitive approach. There are so many factors that influence a woman's life including her style. Thank you for sharing this with us ❤
You've made some interesting points here. In my own style, I do notice differences depending upon the time of year. I live in Canada, where the seasonal temperatures vary dramatically. My summer style tends to be lighter and brighter in general, lightweight fabrics, flowing silhouettes of necessity. My winter style tends to be bulkier and deeper in general, warm knitwear and full length trousers. And as a postmenopausal woman, I often wear a lightweight layer under warm knitwear as I still tend to heat up from time to time. Love your hair BTW and the colour and print you're wearing are lovely on you.
The drastic seasons definitely show us how we need to be adaptable and dress differently! It just fits perfectly to dress light in Summer and cosy in Winter - I actually enjoy being able to change and adapt as the seasons change. Gives a bit (or a lot) of variety! 🍊❤️
Um ... yes ... and no. I've finally realized that I am a vintage/romantic/classic style. How I pull it together works for me ... and strangely, I do pull it together. The turning point for me was to realize that I didn't fit into one of these styles, but all 3 at once.
It sounds like you found the perfect blend for you! I love it when there's a personal medley in someone's style - it should fit the uniqueness that is you! 😊
How good was this video!!! Wow! Clarifying. I love the idea of seasons through the month. Day two and feeling just so - thanks for contextualizing. Also the point about your essence and how it affects what works on you - where did you come up with that? It’s SO TRUE now that you’ve said it but I’ve never encountered that before!
It's been so many epiphanies for me lately 🤭✨️ the essence thing has just blown my mind really. It was like 'oooohhhh of course why didn't I realise before!' 🤷♀️😁
I am a very cyclical person, my cycle is very strong and I really feel the seasonal shifts so I am very curious to play with this idea in dressing more consciously and specifically within the month. And I feel like seeing that agreement as part of this harmony discussion really clicked something for me. I have been both struggling and succeeding lately to extricate the person I want to be, the person I think I should be and the person I really am. So also looking forward to implementing this idea of agreement because harmony I think confuses me but for some reason the idea of asking if something is agreement with me makes sense to me. Thank you for your insights, I loved them.
You're so welcome! Sometimes all it takes is to hear something phrased differently for it to fall into place a bit more clearly. Thank you for sharing part of your journey 🥰✨️
This is a very thought-provoking talk, and I think will be helpful. I can see myself regularly looking at my closet, and liking the things in it, but I can see it doesn't all fit my idea of what my dream style would be. But your ideas have got me thinking, and I do need to take my life as a whole and remember where I live, etc. (I am 68, so the cycle theory doesn't apply here) :)
I have menopausal friends who say their mood is the most stable and consistent now than it has ever been! Most of us end up drawing pieces from our dream style, pieces for our practical lifestyle, pieces for the weather today and blending them together into an outfit. Maybe this is personal style at the end of the day 💃✨️
I’m over 70 and try as I might can never make the white button up work! I think you solved it for me? It feels too “mature “ ? Too proper? It’s funny that at my age looking at your clothes I feel much more drawn to whimsical etc ! Maybe I will try that more! Great vid as I live in a small village on the coast in nz😃💞
!! Exactly! It's bizarre that maturity has nothing to do with age 😆 in more ways than one. I truly believe that connecting to your aura or essence brings the most clarity - I guess our personalities have their own 'age' that has nothing to do with how old we are 🤷♀️😊 The chats in these comments have been giving me even more food for thought ❤️
I recently noticed (again) that I prefer darker coloured clothing for Autumn and Winter. Which is funny because I wore a brown cardigan to work recently and one of my close coworkers was confused because I wasn't as "colourful" as usual.
Keep 'em guessing 😝 my colour preferences shift with the seasons as well! Especially black - which I either CRAVE or can't stand at different points of the year 🤭
This was really an interesting concept. I will have to start thinking about whether my cycle and the seasons change the way I feel like dressing 😊 Btw in which video did you talk about changing your modifier according to the seasons? Thanks 🙏

I think the idea that there is one personal style is a misleading one to begin with. An artwork can be in a certain style, but an artist can work in many different styles. Maybe an artist is famous for one of their styles but that does not mean that they just have this one style. I think the same goes for personal outfit style(s).
Bonus points if you notice the error I made with the seasons 😂😅

Food for thought - enjoy! I hope it sparks some new ideas! Exactly what you said about Granny Weatherwax - she has congruence in her life with where she is and how she carries herself - until she moves to the city for a while and starts wearing red under her cloak! She adapts to a new place, a new pace of life for a time. (the book where she takes Esk to be a Wizard at UU, think it was Equal Rites)
And we all have seasons of life as well.. there are so many ways to apply the 4 seasons / congruence 💖
Thank you for sharing this with us ❤
Well said! We are all navigating so much on a daily basis. Thank you for being here 🥰
You've made some interesting points here.
Great video, love the seasons, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for being here 🥰✨️
Um ... yes ...
Also “like who do we owe this consistency to?” Very good point.
Thank you, I really enjoyed this video! =)
You're welcome, thanks for being here! 💖
I truly believe that connecting to your aura or essence brings the most clarity - I guess our personalities have their own 'age' that has nothing to do with how old we are 🤷♀️😊
The chats in these comments have been giving me even more food for thought ❤️
A lovely way to approach personal style ❤
I'm glad you found it useful! 🥰
Especially black - which I either CRAVE or can't stand at different points of the year 🤭
Interesting ideas..
Thanks for watching! Food for thought 🥰
❤️
🥰 welcome back!
❤
💝
This was really an interesting concept. I will have to start thinking about whether my cycle and the seasons change the way I feel like dressing 😊
Btw in which video did you talk about changing your modifier according to the seasons? Thanks 🙏

Not sure if this link works in a comment but it's this one I did on The Elite Autumn Glow Up Guide 🐿💃
@@AlannaLightheart it did work 😊 Thank you very much ❤ I think my modifier for Autumn (Copenhagen-based here) might be rich - as in rich colours and textures. Still have to contemplate if this modifier feels right 🍂
@@sigriddjernaes Oh, good! Copenhagen is top of my list of places to visit. I would probably be living there (at least for a bit), if I hadn't met my partner and had kids 🤭
Rich feels completely delicious as a modifier and fits so well with the season 🤎
@@AlannaLightheart haha I would love to visit New Zealand again with my partner 😄 Visited as a child (OMG that's about 34 years ago 🙈 where did time go?) and would love to experience all that natural beauty as an adult.
@sigriddjernaes wow how special! It's so fun to revisit somewhere that has childhood memories 🦄
Very intelligent and subtle analysis as always. I’m curious Alanna, how do you chose your subjects and your « angle ». If you’d like to share about this, it would be very interesting 🙏
Thanks Eve 🥰 I don't know really, they just pop up in my mind! I think I'm an INFJ from the Myers Briggs because my mind does love to draw connections between seemingly unrelated things - but the connection to me seems so vivid and obvious (and often intriguing).
And then I have to share! I call them brain farts - though I'm sure there is a more elegant term 🤭😝
I think the idea that there is one personal style is a misleading one to begin with. An artwork can be in a certain style, but an artist can work in many different styles. Maybe an artist is famous for one of their styles but that does not mean that they just have this one style. I think the same goes for personal outfit style(s).
That is a great way to think about it! Allows for more creative expression as well ✨️🦋
