    I lift and dip my pan. Have done it for ever. I have lost count of the number of people who tell me I am doing it wrong. Why then can I find gold at the same location as these others. H'mm I may have had an action that did not disturbed gold in my pan. Great video and we can all learn from others. I am 62 and still open to new ideas. Cheers Chris.

      I once had a pro show me the two different actions using the same paydirt. He lost more with the back and forth rather with the lift and dip. It was very interesting!

    Thank you. I have many times thought that those very aggressive rifles on a pan is overkill unless you are purposely trying to go fast, it also leaves so much more to pan back in the pan and, as you said, you still can lose gold if you're in a hurry.

    I met a guy on the stream we were panning in and I watched him because he did it differently than I did, I knew he was good at finding gold because of the samples he had with him and what he showed us, I tried his way...what you just showed...and it made panning eaiser and quicker for me so I carried n doing it that way....
    Thanks for the explanation.

    Thanks for the panning lesson. I really haven’t paid attention to how I do it but I will definitely reevaluate what I’m doing. I think the problem about panning is the kind of material you're working and the kind of gold you're looking for.
    In a material that is very clayish you spend most of the time braking down clay and if you also pan that slowly, maybe you don't lose gold, but at the end of the day you do 10 pan less.
    And in a nugget or nothing place washing the material faster is usually not a huge problem because larger pieces of gold are really difficult to lose, you have to pan really badly

    • @SpudEngineering
      @SpudEngineering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not exactly accurate. You can lose nuggets just as easy as flower gold if the bedrock shifts.
      The reason you are able to retain it is the riffles.

      @@SpudEngineering in my place (northen Italy) I don't have so much black sand that covers the riffles, so I think it's for that reason that there's not huge difference (I've done few tests)

    When I help friends learn to pan, I make a point to show them not go front to back. It washes everything over the riffles. The point is to drag the dirt of the top

  • @whynotdean8966
    @whynotdean8966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In my extremely limited experience (so take this with a big ol' grain of salt), I have some problems with the up-and-down motion. Namely that when you're submerging the pan in the down motion, the water rushes in (in the opposite direction of what you normally want), which can push the light material back as well as churn up the super fine gold enough to flush it out on the up stroke.
    Keeping in mind I'm a complete amateur, and I'm working with beach concentrates that are 90% super heavy garnet sand, 9.99..% black sand and a tiny bit of super fine gold.

    • @SpudEngineering
      @SpudEngineering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Yeah man. I used to lose a fair of gold out of my pans and it was frustrating the hell out of me. I had to pan into another pan and back again and I’d still see a flake or two. I switched to this method and maybe every 5-6 pans I’d see a flake in the other pan. Now I don’t bother with the second pan, unless it’s sluice cons with heaps of black sands. 👍🏼

    I know some people that go for the weekend and use a dredge for 2 days.. Pay $35 per day for camping and gas dredge for 6hrs per day in a gold bearing area just to come home with 0.2 grams of gold.. Because they don't know how to use the gold pan right.. I've been to the same area, just use a gold pan and bring home more.. Crazy mess..

    Modern triangular riffles are a gimmick. Once you have some experience, try using the smooth side of your pan, you can catch the very finest of gold, including very flat very small flakes that will drift around and even float, and if you leave it in the pan, and then fill the pan with non-gold bearing material, you will pretty easily be able to keep that super small flake in your pan. One thing people don't do, is use different side to side frequencies when classifying. Start with aggressive action, and then then smaller gentler shaking down to no shaking, then remove the top layer of material. Different pieces of gold, in different material, will settle better with certain frequencies and force, so, mix it up.

Because you lost more then you retain. But that's a me thing . I under stand loses. I dont own a Nelson bowl. Or a slick plate but I keep most of mine for nor being anywhere next to a gold area. Chris how am I doing here? (skip to 3:37 in the video) th-cam.com/video/Hp9768-vYx0/w-d-xo.html I'm pretty new at this myself (9 months experience) but think I've got it figured out. Everyone used to tell me I was throwing gold out in the comments but what do you think?

    • @SpudEngineering
      @SpudEngineering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's break this down.
      It appears as if you're panning heavy material. Lots of black sands, as I can see in the tailings.
      They are hard to move, requiring more force to shift. In these cases regular stratification is paramount. Because you're gold will be mixed in that black sand.
      Its unlikely that heavy material like that will shift in the bed. But, it is likely you'll lose gold regardless due to the nature of the dirt being so dense.
      I can suggest that you use the lift and dip whe there's about a cup of material left, thay may help reduce some loss in the garret pan.
      I understand the need for a more forward and violent motion when dealing with cons like that. Slowing that down near the end helped my recovery.
      Thats my take, hope it's helpful, I could very well be wrong.

    • @goldiswhereyoufindit
      @goldiswhereyoufindit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpudEngineering Thanks. You didn't have to take the time to look at that. That was 1/4" classified raw pay. That's how much black sand we have here lol. 70% hematite 30% magnetite. I was production panning. Panned through 6 buckets because it's super rich ground and sluicing isn't allowed at that place.

    Gold takes a lot of effort to extract so it's worth thinking about the main aspects of the process to see if there are ways to increase the total amount of gold in the snuffer at the end of the day, whether or not you are losing some of it along the way. The back and forth method may be faster and/or less effort even if some of the gold is lost. Of course, this discussion is very complex and depends on too many factors to arrive at a single answer. Another interesting example is sluicing. If the sluice is the bottleneck, should you double the water flow to run twice the dirt even if you lose 20% of the gold by doing so?

    • @larrychase1784
      @larrychase1784 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you that the dip and lift method is better. I do think from personal experience that when dealing with black sand and fine gold a drop center pan improves your efficiency.
