    When I lived in South America I saw people that had bought rolls of .22 caliber lead wire. They nipped off chunks with side cutters and shot them through air rifles.

    What a great idea , I've been looking at molds costing 300 bucks or more it's crazy what some manufacturers want , I would take more care in the process and maybe make a way to clean then up a bit while still semi molten , have you tried cleaning up the tabs while still molten , just take a putty knife and hit the tops with it right after you pour , anyway you thought outside the box and took me with you , I got a lot of ideas from this , if indeed I do make my own or have any mods I will for sure do a shout out and give you credit for sparking ideas

    As a last resort it is a good idea. Kind of slow but good idea. Do not breath the lead fumes, they are bad for your health. So do it outdoors. Also avoid direct contact with skin

    • @WaschyNumber1
      @WaschyNumber1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can't breathe the lead fumes, what's evaporating are oil and other residues.
      Lead evaporation starts from 1749 °C, 3180 °F,.
      You shouldn't eating anything when handling lead and wash hands afterwards with soap or better dedicated washing stuff for lead cleaning. And also not breathing the powder from grinding lead.

    Have you ever chronyd them? I have a 44 fpe .22 Walther PCP and did the same shit (with a 2.5 mm hole through the middle and a nail to make hollowpoints). The rifling grabs the whole length of the pellet thus slowing it down immensely. Mine are 25.5 gr and they fire at about 760 fps - normally I´d get 860 from a pellet of this weight, so I lose 100 feet to friction. I can´t imagine what the speed would be in a 12 fpe springer...

    • @TheModernMaker
      @TheModernMaker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a Chronograph but I would be really interested to see how they perform, I thought about making a slightly altered mouldt that allows for a hollow part in the back so it can deform more to engage the rifling :)

    Interesting approach. I would recommend a drill press whenever possible. And just as an FYI, while it's always stressed to wash your hands after handling lead (yes it's important), the single biggest source (medically speaking) of systemic lead poisoning is inhalation. So, always wash with soap and water, and always have Good Ventilation. Do that, and handling lead isn't an issue. Of course some like to use nitrile gloves, and that's fine, but good handwashing with soap and water will work, as long as your hands stay away from your mouth until wash-up time - i.e. no drinking, eating, smoking, gum chewing, or etc.

    • @Polo_CJR
      @Polo_CJR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People done this since 1800s they lived there life fine, and there's no proof of what you're saying. There is proof of people using it everyday and living normal life expectancy with normal life issues.

    • @kirkboswell2575
      @kirkboswell2575 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Polo_CJR - ??? No proof? Sorry, you are wrong about that. Back when lead was still used in gas, parking lot attendants had high lead levels - to the point it was considered an occupational hazard. Indoor firing range operators also had high lead levels persistently. Neither group handled lead, but were in areas where lead would be airborne for significant periods of time. Removal of lead from gas has eliminated the occupational hazard of high lead levels of parking lot attendants, and mandatory air scrubbing has eliminated lead in Indoor range operators. Also, took care of a patient who had persistently high lead levels. He was a reloader. Swore up and down he was washing his hands and avoiding eating and drinking while at the bench. Come to find out, he was a tobacco chewer. Since he didn't eat or drink tobacco, he truthfully said he avoided drinking and eating. Tobacco got added to the list of things to avoid, and his lead levels came down. The only other intervention was washing his hands well with soap and water after a stint at the bench.
      Mercury is the only heavy metal I'm aware of that will absorb through skin, and it does this by readily compounding with skin cells. The only way to get lead through the skin is through a cut. Large, small, micro, it requires a cut. That leaves inhalation and ingestion as the primary routes to get lead into the body. Bullet fragments from getting shot aren't usually a problem because the body walls them off with scar tissue, but if anything breaks that scar tissue down, then bullet fragments can become a source, but that's a rarity, not a rule. The biggest problem with lead in the bloodstream is that it enters the body more easily than the body can get rid of it. Yes, the body can eliminate lead, but it's a very slow process and takes a long time. If you keep adding exposure, the lead levels will keep climbing.
      So, I repeat, good handwashing with soap and water is required when handling lead. Do that and there isn't any reason to be afraid of handling lead. Want to use gloves? Be my guest. Nothing wrong with that approach, but good handwashing after is fine. I know of someone else who uses a lab coat when at the bench. Takes it off before picking up his kids. That's also a valid approach.
      I'll repeat lead is a problem when it gets into the bloodstream. That can happen easily through the lungs and stomach. It DOESN'T happen easily otherwise, and good handwashing with soap and water will remove any lead molecules from the skin - which is why lead has been used "without any problems" since (1800's - nope. Since before Christ).

      You're not cooking the lead long enough. That's the impurities in the lead, which will separate entirely when lead is cooked long enough at the right temperature.
      I went to a trade school for plumbing -- we had to cast iron pipe w/ lead & the instructor would Jimmy them to test
