I was gonna say: it’s his timing as he’s rising up slightly by moving his front hip out of the way as he’s about to make contact, but you gave a better explanation! If I tried this, I’d cold top every iron shot! 😂
As a non divot taker, some of it has to do with trying to protect my jacked up wrists, but I'm also a little OCD, so watching nicely mown chunks fairway being ripped up, gives me a bit of a visceral reaction. That being said, thin to win every time.
I hear ya! I try to imagine I'm sending a horrible toupee from the '70s to it's glorious fate at the moon. That makes feel better about it. Simple joys 'n all ;D
I agree. With a shallow angle of attack, and perfect timing through impact (clubhead descending slightly while the the lead leg is straightening and the hands are actually swinging up slightly), the proper shaft lean can be achieved and no significant divot is necessary. I say Tiger was not joking, but, as ALWAYS, i could be wrong.
I'm only a beginner, so definitely no tiger, but I hardly ever take a divot on my best swings while the mark left by the strike is absolutely perfect and definitely higher than your launch monitor is showing here. I can only hope my low point is past the ball and really need to get on a monitor ASAP to find out.
I grew up playing a course that was hard as a parking lot. Became a picker, something I still struggle with. But, many people like myself can flush every shot on a mat. It's when we go to the course that is becomes a problem. Mats offer more forgiveness for the bottom of your arc as the bounce drags across the floor. Compression is easier. But I think it creates bad habits for some like me. I'm your partner on any simulator! But go out on a wet, soft day and I struggle.
Of course I'm no tiger woods but this is exactly how I like to strike an iron. I don't like the feel of a steep angle of attack. The challenge with this technique is its very easy to hit the ball fat. It takes great timing to combine the rising of the hands and the descending of the head of the club. When I do it right it feels fantastic. The compression is great because of the low spin loft of a shallow angle of attack.
I only really take divots with my wedges. But I tend to only take grass and leave the crown of the plant. But I do take divots. Only if my swing is off.
You are describing Paul Runyon's chip/putt method. Problem is you are leaving out two important parts of his method that makes it work better than what you are teaching. 1. Grip the club with palms up, or open. The left hand more ccw, and the right hand more cw. This cretes a square club face at ball contact because the hands are working against each other, which creates less opening and closing of the club face during the stroke. 2. Use a shorter back stroke, with a longer forward stroke. The forward stroke length dictates the distance needed. By having a shorter back stroke, this eliminates the opening, and closing of the club face. The shorter back stroke guarantees better accuracy just like it does in putting. Jut my opinion.
@@T.Hizzleyea, that’s probably how he does it with all the slam pieces he’s piping down around town. Although, I am very intrigued as to what his divots look like on the course & the range.
If you are watching this TH-cam video on ball striking...you should ALWAYS take a divot with your irons...ALWAYS. Because you.. and I are just NOT good enough to do otherwise...Golfers take divots..for a REASON. It gives you a GREATER margin of error in the strike.
I don’t think he’s kidding. When I’m hitting my irons flush I rarely leave a divot. I thought it was a little weird until tiger said he doesn’t either. I have an abnormally fast swing for an amateur and an “unorthodox” release of in my wrist, but it works so well for me. Not sure it’s the best advice, but my coach said “it isn’t broken don’t fix it” lol. I’m considering starting to enter tournaments and I’ve only been playing for a year now.
@@davidhoover2532 😂😂 Tiger also told his ex he was taking her on an amazing holiday to Bali, just to get her out his house. Only to leave her at the airport. "Moe Norman the best ball striker" 😂😂 🎣 most fish don't get caught twice, yet here you are 😂😂
No, he wasn’t joking. When he’s hitting the ball well, he doesn’t take a divot. If you go back and look at some of his best shots on tour, you’ll see that he’s not joking about that.
Always great, detailed instruction…
Steve Stricker doesn’t take divots. Moe Norman didn’t take divots and used to brag that the course maintainer wouldn’t know he was there.

Not sure what context Tiger was referring to, but he takes divots. Probably just messing with Scheffler, and the golf world lol

That's Tiger's practice routine. He does take divots on the course. Using the bounce with wedges
Only way to max out spin rate

All I remember is way back he would take toupee-sized divots. Announcers would marvel.

He was haveing him on. Getting in his head.
Tiger takes huge divots. Only on the range he doesn’t
I can confirm he indeed, skins beaver pelt size divots.

People don’t understand context. IT WAS A VIDEO ON FAIRWAY WOODS. HE’S TALKING ABOUT NOT TAKING A DIVOT WITH FAIRWAY WOODS
I always have been the same, no divots is the way it should be.
as a non speaking english educated person, it is the new way to say IRONS ? Ions ??
Ions is the correct way to say irons; this is not new. Yes, English is a strange language.

I think divots are over rated and do nothing but tear up the grass ;)
I’m sure it is good advice, just a bit too much to handle for me 🤒
Anyone who has a vertical swing, as taught by Don Trahan, does not take a divot.
Most hit a long, high ball.
Yes…. I’m very vertical and my iron shots bring rain🙂
You do realise Tiger was joking and was playing Scotty. Of course Tiger takes divots 😂😂

Moe Norman did not take divots. Tiger said Moe was the best striker ever

How bout pslaining why they are more like Tiger... everyone's swing is different...
Not saying your not great... but more detail about Tiger... natural is better...
