I was genuinely impressed by this. The fact that they gave Napalm Death a spot on their show is good enough, but that they allowed them a chance to explain some of the most commonly misunderstood things about metal (i.e. growled vocals) without making it too gimmicky or taking the piss really impressed me. Kudos to the BBc for this.

That’s a nice and a bit romantic description of band. But Napalm were very, very driven, They very much “knew” they were going to “make it” but in their terms. Yup...then again the UK was the land that spawned Sabbath, Priest, Maiden and later Venom, all of whom pioneered metal in their own right and were certainly not without generating controversy. It is therefore no surprise that the land of The Beatles, Tea and The Houses of Parliament went on to spawn the likes of such armies of brute force with the likes of Napalm Death, Carcass, Cancer and Bolt Thrower. However a band as brutal as Napalm Death appearing on children's TV remains something truly extraordinary while the PMRC were getting offended by glam metal across the pond.

They couldn't deduce the drummer said "death metal" when he said it. Death Metal was that unknown in 1989 in the mainstream.
When Napalm death appeared on the BBC in 1989 the channel got a load of complaints from people not so much about how much they hated the music but they thought the BBC was taking the piss out of the public and the band and music wasn't real.

I asked some people who looked like metalheads if they were going to the gig and it ended up being the band themselves haha. All I had was a copy of Scum on cassette that somebody at school had recorded for me, and I hadn't yet seen how they looked yet.
