  • How To, Harley Davidson Loose Transmission shift lever. This is what cause rattling in your shifter. I'll show you how to fix this in 15 minute. Check all bolts to make sure everything is tight in the shift linkage. This is a pretty common issue with Harley Davidson Touring motorcycles that should be checked regularly on all bikes. Road King, Street Glide, Road Glide and Electra glide.
    Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching.

Thanks for taking the time to do this for us that have to take care of our bikes outside of Harley you ROCK! Mine was just as loose as yours was and it is tight as a drum now.

    My shifter was terribly loose but the bolt was super tight.

    I just did this fix on my 2011 Road Glide Ultra. Taking off the left side rider heat shield and disconnecting the front of the toe shifter linkage rod gives plenty of room to make it happen. On my bike the bolt is a 5/16-24x1” hex head not a socket head/Allen bolt, so I used a 1/2” socket. Other than that I did exactly what you did in the video and it worked perfectly. Thanks Rocco!

      I never find 1st gear until I'm totally stopped and then place the trans in 1st it always goes in easily with no problem. I'm running a 98 Dyna with 33,000 miles, no loose linkage or shifting arm problems and no oil leaks at the shift shaft. Every spring I lightly oil all moving parts that need lube and check and tighten every bolt that needs attention. This takes me about 2 days to complete and the piece of mind I get is worth it alone not to mention that at 63 years old setting on the side of the road is not an option. I treat all my bikes the same way and none have let me down at any time ever. Enjoyed the video thanks.

    For foots sake, please replace the bolt! Preferably a grade 8 hex head with a lock washer! Just not worth saving a dollar and reuse a worn out bolt! And please understand that on a six speed bike, there is adequate clearance to remove the lever and replace it. Don't let the dealership remove your primary just to install a new lever. But on five speeds, the primary has to be removed to replace the lever

    Just bought a 2005 Road King Classic with 30K miles on it. Great shape apart from the loose shifter. Found this video and
    was excited to fix it. Just came in from the garage and it looks like the bolt is as tight as it can be. Not going get any tighter. So I am assuming it has to be a worn shaft that is causing the play, and not a loose bolt. Dang! Still feel lucky to have the bike. :)

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear about that. The shaft on the transmissions is made out a hardened steel. So it will be the arm that is worn. Try to loosen and retighten with a 1/2 ratchet. I know it gets a little uncomfortable and you do not feel won't to snap it, but that's what I had to do take a close look at the video. Sometimes the spline on the lever gets worn to the point where no matter how tight the bolt is the lever will need to be replaced. It's a bit of a job because the inner primary needs to come off because there is not enough room to remove the lever otherwise. While your in there you might as well replace the seals.

Tried to put a screwdriver to wedge that lever closer and then tighten with a swivel and extension use a half inch drive ratchet. Worth to try, you'll see you will get more surface area for that shaft to tighten to. if you look close it will walk in and out watch the video put a wedge in there, I used screwdriver. wedge the side of loosened lever in. You may not even hv an oil leak from the tranny seal. That oil on the tranny near that area is also from the the vent line from the transmission)a little further back. The TC don’t really hv any pressure problems in the tranny (like the new M8), because the TC are vented. The hose goes up and forms a small downward “U” . The excess is just vented down toward that area. FYI.
    Also, I noticed you installed the shifter linkage with the heim joints. Did you have any issues with the linkage not running as “parallel” to the motor (ie have an offset)? I installed similar linkage and notice the offset is a bit more than with the stock linkage. I even attached it to the other side of the front pedal shaft to compensate for the offset, but it still was a bit much. I ended up using a larger bolt with some washers as spacers to even it out. Was wondering if you had similar issues? Thanks in advance. Great vid 👍😎

    Thanks for the great videos and information!
    My question is my front shifter arm on my 05 Road King Classic keeps getting stripped out. I even tried the trick from one of your videos, to open the gape to make it tighter on the splines, that didn't work out for me unfortunately it became loose and stripped out again.
    Do they make a main shifter rod that makes the front and rear shifters stationary, so the splines don't keep getting stripped out? You would think they would make something like a bolt or cotter pin to go through the main shifter rod to make it stationary so it doesn't keep getting stripped out. No? Am I thinking totally crazy here or missing something? Im not a mechanic, so please bear with my question. Thank you.

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy to help. Thank you for your insight and your support Greg. There's not much heat in the transmission as you noticed when you change the oi, but you are OKl it's never really black but that shifter bearing sits halfway in oil so you have a seal for that shifter rod, and that tends to fail, and especially when you got a loose shifter arm. Harley thing. Thank you for watching and all your support Greg. Ride safe and have a great day. Love my Road King. But I have changed that seal twice. I got 50,000 miles.

      Sorry to hear that. The way I look at it is. The only way to fix it properly. Is to take the outer and inner primary. clutch and compensator off to get to that lever on the tranny. Thank you Harley Davidson. So I myself will give it another little wrenching. Try to get it as much on the shaft as you can, and with your half inch ratchet wrench her down. I just did this fix on my 2011 Road Glide Ultra. Taking off the left side rider heat shield and disconnecting the shifter linkage rod at the front/toe shifter will give you plenty of room. On my bike the bolt is a 5/16-24x1 hex head, not a socket head/Allen bolt, so I used a 1/2” socket. Other than that I did exactly what Rocco did in his video and it worked perfectly. Good luck!

Its a completely different ride and so far seems to be running good except when I get into the higher rpms around 4,500 to 5,000 I notice a little pinging.
