I've only just finished Ernle Bradford's great book 'The Great Siege, Malta 1565' this past weekend. I am heartened to see the Grand Master in a place of honor in a city that bears his name, for he is certainly deserving of high praise -- as are those selfless defenders who served and died under his command.
As a distant family member, I just can not get over the fact that the name of this great man gets to be butchered by so many pundits on the Great Siege and on Maltese history in general. His name was Jean de LaValette, and he was born in a small town called Parisot in Tarn-et-Garonne. Hence, the occasional add-on to his surname. Furthermore, this grand master was not a prince, as mentioned in this clip, although he was obviously of noble heritage, with an occasional duke as well as marquises, and counts being members of his family.
