Kenshi is going to look back on this video years from now and say, “I can’t believe I used to turn my left foot to 90 degrees and drag it across the ground.”
Actually when you fight for real and not in a kendo bout is natural for the rear foot to turn 90 degrees: if you study the koryu (the old school) you'll see that all of them have the rear foot quite open, if not completely 90 degrees
@@64Rosso I feel I can have better footwork and further leap if both feet are facing the opponent, I practice Kenjutsu and that's how they taught it to me, what do you think is better for fight efficiency ?
@@kronoscamron7412 In Katori Shinto Ryu the rear foot is open, more or less 90 degrees; in Aikido it's the same, in Kashima Shinto Ryu too... If you you want just go back and forth facing just one opponent then maybe the Kendo stance is the best, but if want to be able to perform circular movements, or face more than one opponent, then you need to have the hips open, not blocked towards only one direction. This is what I've learned in my years of training and study, but you know what they say: "You never stop learning" :-) May I ask you what style of kenjutsu are you studying?
This was pretty cool. The kendoka couldn't complete with the rapier's reach, but he got the measure of it very quickly. And two handed sword is typically faster and quicker to adjust than a one handed sword (wrists move faster than arms). It was interesting to see them both adapting and switching up what they were doing to try and pull ahead.
thanks for that ... i dind't see that initially ... but after your comment i realised they had.. thanks.. i hadn't realized at all... feel so silly for missing that as they both adapted... good eye...
That kendoka couldn’t. His technique is beginner level. (Shodan in kendo is not high) He could barely reach kote, let alone men. Hard to watch actually.
"two handed sword is typically faster and quicker to adjust than a one handed sword (wrists move faster than arms)" A lot of the action in rapier fencing comes from the wrist, and the rapier's point of balance is optimized to enable very quick pointwork. It's not a light weapon, tho, so it would be usually used together wit ha dagger.
Its very interesting to see how these two things relate to each other. Different weapons bring different perspectives in combat. Each has its own characteristic with movement and technique. Great video !
La katana es un arma antigua y es una reliquia, no te protege ni muñeca ni mano, mal equilibrada, se usa a dos manos, nada que ver con la ropera española y daga, eso era lo mejor
Yay! Cloak and dagger techniques! I have personally learned them and i'm always so sure of myself whenever i have a sweater, i think to myself: "if i can stop a somewhat skilled sword man with a cloak, then i prabably can win against a knife weilding mugger with not so much experience!" Haha Cloak techniques are just like brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, they give confidence to people!
At the end of the day, thrust from a rapier is much more difficult to defend compared to a cut. Its one of the reasons why they became so popular, other being the fact that they are better at penetrating light armor and even mail.
I love this channel. It’s very interesting to see, it’s almost like the beginning of UFC when there was karate, judo, bjj, Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing et.c. A genuine strive to learn swordsmanship, by facing other styles and trying to be as real as possible.
I don't really compare them Both techniques are cool Due to the fact that they have their own unique ways of fighting styles, and the fighting style changes depending to a master But, you can compare two masters, on which of their techniques are superior Either of them are great, techniques depends on its user So yah, each every martial arts is cool in their own way In summary *I like both of them ^u^*
@@ended-randomcreations Yes. But in common we know that thust can reach a vital organ in one blow. The cutting slice fencing has his strong points, it can inutilizate enemy for after being slaughter. A obvius. A good swords figther normaly wins..greeting from Brasil
@@furiacabocla2furiacabocla589 I agree that a stab reaches an organ and can cripple people, but a slice covers more area. wouldn't that disable someone faster to finish them off or is there another advantage to thrusts?
That katana user is fast, probably the fastest from the vid on YT :), but still im kinda buffled why the Rapier user was just waiting for attacks not using his range advantage, piercing etc. He is just passively waiting most of the time for an attack. Almost every time when the Rapier user started to be agressive he instantly was getting hits as first, but yeah the problem is hitting and not getting hit back by katana in responce, althrough rapiers were used with daggers and that would be a huge advantage vs swords used two handedly. Rapier is just a duelist weapon desinged to use with a 2nd specialist weapon, specially effective vs none/low armored targets and has advantage in that aspect in terms of duel.
The shinai is very fast to the parry because it is quite light, the rapier is still 1-1.3kgs in one hand. Reach advantage is matched by speed disadvantage. As soon as you shoot a thrust which gets parried and youre still on the lunge and the shinai guy is charging forwards what can you do then? Not much. Better to be patient and pick your moments
i like how this video shows the most skillful strikes of both instead of trying to make one look better they all look real like the fought for some time
Bit of a mismatch here, though, because the shinai used by the kendoka is practice tool that weighs a fraction of the sword it's meant to represent, whereas the rapierist is using basically a blunted replica of a real sword, historically weighted. Here, the kendoka is playing a martial sport, fighting someone who is practicing a martial art. Do the same thing but swap out the kendoka for a kenjitsu master with a blunt steel katana and you have a more accurate version of this matchup.
I think they both enjoyed making this video as much as I like watching the vidio! 🙂 Loved the sence of humour both displayed followed by a very good demonstion of their respective skills!
As far as rapiers go its easy to forget how a how large an impact a small movement can be. Destreza is the perfect example of such. Its very hard to initiate a cut 2 handed against an opponent whos home base is a middle guard. The hands or body are almost always exposed to quick assault on wind up.
Great video. I love both styles but the thrust being quicker and more direct than the slash, rapier has advantage. Ofc always depends on the swordsman.
i disagree. Looking at the video, most of the time the rapier doesn't land, and even if it does, the damage is non-fatal. But the kendo strikes would all have been fatal, even the strikes to the hand would have cut the hand off. The kendo head strikes would have been instant kill
@@henrylau3888 I disagree with your disagreement. Thrusts may not *look* as lethal as cuts, but a puncture to the lungs, heart, head, and digestive organs would kill you. Heart and head would kill you immediately, punctures to the lungs will have you drowning in your own blood, and punctures to the guts would leave you with "undesirables" getting all over your other organs and dying of a very quick infection and or the toxins from your body's own waste. Training rapiers are also allot different from real ones. Real rapiers were allot sturdier and rigid, they had to be in order to get through thick clothing, rib cages, and even skulls. Yes, a dedicated thrust to the skull with a battle-ready rapier would have gone through the entire structure and pop out the other end. Not to mentions the reach advantage, superior hand protection, and the fact that thrust are far more difficult to spot and predict than cuts. The reason why training rapiers are allot more flexible is because you don't want to hurt people when jamming a thin metal stick onto their torso when you're just practicing. Most modern reproductions for sparring are far more flexible than their historical counterparts for that reason. For the rapier man not hitting as much as the Kendo man, I'd put it up to the Katana man just having better reaction time and physic. Rapier man did look a bit chonky, ngl.
@@henrylau3888 I just took a longer look at the video and brought out the notepad, the Rapier user only lost by one point. Not very considerable as a whole. Also, the fact that they were actually just playing around and having fun, by the looks of it, rather than doing any serious sparring, doesn't really show both weapons their best performance.
@@mask8402 Agree, but also disagree. The rapier thrust will be lethal, but will take time for the blood lost and organ damage to take effect. The cuts through musculature will instantly disable because the muscles damaged will be no longer be functional from that moment on.
@N Maruri Through the brain case yes. Otherwise, no. For me personally, a scratch would probably have me on the floor crying. In the Blackhawk Down episode, an American soldier was shot with an unexploded RPG and kept fighting. People have been shot in the heart and head and kept fighting, only to die later. Unless a hit disconnects the central nervous system, there is no guarantee the fight stops.
Awesome video! Love the fun and laid-back energy of it! Not gonna lie though: it did have me a smidge concerned that the Kendoka wasn't given a 3-weapon mask or something designed for things with smaller points than shinai. (I'm assuming you guys already checked that before bouting though. :p )
Other than the crippling anxiety that the rapier would go through the gap in the men and pierce the kendoka’s eye, this is rly exhilarating to watch. both sides had really good seme and ki. I actually have fought against someone with a shinai and kodachi b4 but never against someone with a cloak. It probably wouldn’t work well since shinai tips are cloth and our gloves are pretty much mittens.
This reminds me of my friend and I. In high school, we used to go outside during lunch with a couple of foam polo bats (roughly the size and shape of a mace) and hockey shin pads we'd strap to our arms, and duel with them. He had taken Kendo lessons before, and I mainly mimicked HEMA using a one-handed weapon and makeshift shield (I had taken no lessons in anything of the sort). Despite the fact that he had taken lessons and I hadn't, we were surprisingly even as we messed around and whacked each other with foam clubs. It was a lot of fun, and I'm surprised the teachers gave us permission to do that.
The kendo fencer definitely has the better skills. The rapier fencer was super timid with the bind, and the kendo fencer just controlled everything for most of what I saw. Just seemed like the rapier fencer was really afraid of getting hit, which tells me he doesn't know much about point control or defense. Really entertaining video tho. :)
I feel in a lot of these battles, the Kendoka is far more skilled and practiced than his opponents. What are the rankings in sport of the fighter with the rapier, in this case? We know the kendoka is 1st Dan, but the other fighter is...?
@@eddiehazard3340 was pointing out the rapier guy level. Hes quite low skilled, basically waiting for hits, not using much defensive/aggressive maneuvers
Whenever I see these kendo vs. rapier/foil/epee fights, the thing that always bothers me is that the protection each person wears is designed to protect them from their own weapon, not the weapon of the other discipline. This is dangerous! The helmet the kendoka wears is not designed to stop a thin metal blade. I have watched many videos like this: Why does nobody ever see this problem?
because the equipment is largely the same. practice rapiers are made with this in mind, and always have a rubber, plastic, or cork tip applied for safety.
@@neverseemstoAsh doesnt matter. A kendo mask has such big opening a rapier tip could just get through. And after it get through the tip could well made of rubber but a rubber on a tip of rapier thats thrusted by a grown men is gonna mess your face really bad, or even your brain.

A bit unfair I think, that rapier looks fairly heavy and historical, while the kendoka only has a shinai, which are significantly lighter than historical (metal!) katana.
The rapier guy was not very good either. Watch other videos of rapier folks using heavy rapiers and beating kendokas. It largely comes down to the individual fighter's skill.
There is always skill difference when you compare the two sport and duel them. Kendo only learns how to duel against kendo and similarly for rapier fencing. Honestly though if there was a sport where your given the choice of either kendo or fencing sword then I believe rapier will dominate.
@@vainklutz3179 idk man, there will be always people that will be exeptional with the katana or long sword, remember that with one of those you can easily (kinda haha) move the rapier out of the way to attack, and as rapier users have to be pointing their weapon to at their foe, it is not so hard to aim for it, you can see on this video how the Kendoka kept being able to hit near the wrist withou letting his opponent lunge at him, and he was aiming for the wrist! What if he goes for the rapier? But in the case of a school/dojo where you can use the weapon of your choosing, people will probably adapt to this, as i am _not so good_ with rapiers, i can't accuratelly tell how would that look like, but the point is that both weapons have their strenghts! None will "dominate" over the other, as both sides will constantly adapt their game!
The question which one had the best fighting style was already solved 500 years ago. The Portugese landed, won every fight with two hand fighting against anyone who tried to challenge them, Musashi was an eye witness of that and copied the Portugese style and adopted it, he became the best fighter of japan and a legend with a copy of the Portugese style defeating every existing fencing master of japan. Old age European style > old age Japanese style. if you believe mushashi didnt use portugese sailor dual wielding style, than you are in pure denial.
There's no evidence Musashi witness Portuguese dual wielding, dual wielding was also a thing in Japan long before him, he's just famous for opening a school particularly for it, it came from his family linkage of jitte, he's not the best fighter in Japan history there were even Samurai with a higher win count of duels than him. his book was not even widely known about until a radio broadcast made it popular in the 50s. He also lost duels and parts of his life are questionable.
Also I think know what you are talkin about regarding the first half those stories regarding dueling likely never happen as the story doesn't make sense when you look into it, but if we were to take the stories into account then the second apsidal to be acknowledged as a Japanese I turned the tables and one every single dual after.

It's good to see a equal level of both practictioners. Great sportsmanship and lots of fun. Awesome exchanges and varied techniques.
Kenshi is going to look back on this video years from now and say, “I can’t believe I used to turn my left foot to 90 degrees and drag it across the ground.”
Actually when you fight for real and not in a kendo bout is natural for the rear foot to turn 90 degrees: if you study the koryu (the old school) you'll see that all of them have the rear foot quite open, if not completely 90 degrees
ye absolutely poor form.
yet they do it all the time in Olympic fencing and Hema. . watch sparring matches of Hema and fencing, you will see how common it is.
This is what I've learned in my years of training and study, but you know what they say: "You never stop learning" :-)
May I ask you what style of kenjutsu are you studying?
Very nice!
Ok, that was really fun to watch. Well done. Can we get some more of this kinda content in the future? :)
Rapier guy is low level tbh. He keep distance very badly. Rapier doesn't leave almost any chance to katana because of very long reach.
"two handed sword is typically faster and quicker to adjust than a one handed sword (wrists move faster than arms)"
A lot of the action in rapier fencing comes from the wrist, and the rapier's point of balance is optimized to enable very quick pointwork.
It's not a light weapon, tho, so it would be usually used together wit ha dagger.
Its very interesting to see how these two things relate to each other. Different weapons bring different perspectives in combat. Each has its own characteristic with movement and technique. Great video !
Yeah, the well aimed wooden sword makes headache, and the rapier makes holes.
It's a total mismatch, but still fun to watch.
Wouldn't be the case against a two-handed sword
La katana es un arma antigua y es una reliquia, no te protege ni muñeca ni mano, mal equilibrada, se usa a dos manos, nada que ver con la ropera española y daga, eso era lo mejor
Loved it guys thank you very much for creating! Well done to both combatants!
Hey, very cool visualisation of strikes! Wish to see more combat (may be more serious) videos in this style!
Good job!
This is fantastic. Kenjutsu would be very different, but this is the best!
Yay! Cloak and dagger techniques! I have personally learned them and i'm always so sure of myself whenever i have a sweater, i think to myself: "if i can stop a somewhat skilled sword man with a cloak, then i prabably can win against a knife weilding mugger with not so much experience!" Wow. I always had a feeling the cloak and dagger would work that well. But seeing it action just shows how real world techniques are deadly!
At the end of the day, thrust from a rapier is much more difficult to defend compared to a cut. Its one of the reasons why they became so popular, other being the fact that they are better at penetrating light armor and even mail.
Not gonna lie as a Japanese and someone whose had years of kendo, the jacket use was genius.
I love this channel. It’s very interesting to see, it’s almost like the beginning of UFC when there was karate, judo, bjj, Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing et.c.

quick, sharp kendo techniques. nice.
Two homies having fun. The type of video I like to see.
Kinda crazy how fast that Kendoka moved during certain attacks, the dude's nimble AF. They both did really well though, a treat to watch.
One that goes
Slicey slice slice
And the other goes
Stabby stab stab
Yes!… thrust vs. cut. A pretty even match.
Stab kills more easely than cut. But was brave a funny.. Just a match..
I don't really compare them
Both techniques are cool
Due to the fact that they have their own unique ways of fighting styles, and the fighting style changes depending to a master
But, you can compare two masters, on which of their techniques are superior
Either of them are great, techniques depends on its user
So yah, each every martial arts is cool in their own way
In summary
*I like both of them ^u^*
Because thrusting is not always lethal

That was really good, keep them coming!
I love how they're just having fun 😁
Love it just subscribed after watching a few

Kendo "Contemplate my full power"
Rapier "time for my last resource!"
Beaux combats, toujours le respect des arts de chacun. Super vidéo, 👍👍👍👍👍 bien joué !!
As far as rapiers go its easy to forget how a how large an impact a small movement can be. Destreza is the perfect example of such. Its very hard to initiate a cut 2 handed against an opponent whos home base is a middle guard. The hands or body are almost always exposed to quick assault on wind up.
Crazy brilliant…good job guys.👍
This had me cracking up, looked fun! 😊
Impressive techniques. Their moves are all cleanly cut, no fancy stuffs, I like it
Man Medieval Total War really improved it's graphics
I loved this, It was so fun to watch ^ ^
Other than the crippling anxiety that the rapier would go through the gap in the men and pierce the kendoka’s eye, this is rly exhilarating to watch. both sides had really good seme and ki. I actually have fought against someone with a shinai and kodachi b4 but never against someone with a cloak. It probably wouldn’t work well since shinai tips are cloth and our gloves are pretty much mittens.
Dear Weaponism, what a great series of matches between different weapon bearers! Love it! :D
They really needed to swap masks for safety reason.
I like the edit and DBZ sound effects 👌
Okay this looks more realistic than wingchun video
They even had that wacky movie moment where both opponents drop their wreapons and switch lol
Thisisvery good research! The long reach of the rapier does make it hard to enter their center for a big cut👏👏👏
The edits are great.
I feel in a lot of these battles, the Kendoka is far more skilled and practiced than his opponents. What are the rankings in sport of the fighter with the rapier, in this case? We know the kendoka is 1st Dan, but the other fighter is...?

I am a 1 Dan myself, this is great to see I always wondered what would happen
