You are the second Dutch to tell us you have not heard of eggs on haring. I’m not sure why our book mentions it, maybe the author had it once.

Cudos for trying the typical Dutch zoute haring. When freshly from sea, we call it nieuwe haring which is eaten without anything.
The history is that the fish in the past was caught, cleaned and put in barrels with salt to keep it fresh.
Today the boats have freezers however we love our salted herring, so the salting process still takes place.
When the herring is not fresh from sea it is just called herring, so we drop the nieuwe or new in front of it.
Then we eat it with onions and in some places with pickles. Never with egg though, that was new to me.

Egg? Never heard of that. Onions as topping is often used.
We have a television program in the Netherlands "keuringsdienst van waarde", they discovered "new haring / nieuwe haring" is not really fresh and new 😅 probably can look it up on youtube.

From another Dutchie; Like you said I never heard of boiled eggs with zoute haring (salty herring). I only know it with chopped raw unions and pickles. Sometimes cut to segments or whole on a soft bun not on al cracker. It should be oily or as we call it it “vettig” (greasy). The more greasy it is the better. Some herring seasons are greasier than others, it depends on the year.

And by the way, I know you live overseas so you probably can not get the salted herring fresh but the vacuumed/ packaged herring is about the worst you can get. Over here we (mostly) only eat them fresh from the fish store (although you can get them packaged aswell but I don’t recommend them).

Hi...seen your lovely video. At least you tried my favourite food. But...as a Dutch lady I have never had haring with a boiled egg or buscuit! Did you know it's the most healthiest food you can eat! I am brought up with haring and when there is a fresh catch I am first in line.
Next time just put chopped onions on a plate and take the whole fish through it so it sticks on it and take a big bite! Small bites doesn't give you the taste. It's an acquired taste so you have to eat it regularly to really appreciate it. But well done keep going and finish that tray! 😊

@@1000FoodFamilyBut I’m on the side of your oldest, never again. And I’m Dutch, I’m the only one in our family not liking herring. I like almost every kind fish, except herring. I love smoked eel though, my favorite. We also have a warm bread meat roll called saucijzenbroodje or sausage roll. Normally there is spicy minced beef in it, but on new Year’s Eve my mother made them with smoked Dutch eel, so delicious. You can make it easy if they sell ready-to-bake puff pastry dough in the US. Over here they sell them from Danerolles in a sort of cardboard tin. It is the same ready-to-bake puff pastry dough you also make croissants from. Instead of putting a shortly fried minced beaf roll in the pastry dough, you put smoked eel in the pastry dough, fold the dough around the eel and bake it in the oven like croissants. Both the minced beef and smoked eel rolls are really delicious.

Frozen/packaged Herring loses so much taste and it indeed becomes kinda Mushy. 10 points for your Son who didn't like it but ate it anyway! Fresh Hollandse Nieuwe is traditionally eaten pure, or with onions. The oiliness is pure from the fish which is kinda amazing. Fresh Herring might be an acquiered taste...but I can assure you the fresh ones beat any other by miles.

Very honored to see our national delicacy in the "Foods to eat before you die" book, although I'm kinda doubtful the experience you had, does the herring any justice.
I really like herring, but it is supposed to be eaten freshly cleaned, since it's almost raw and spoils really fast.

"Matjes" can be translated as Mullets ( the hairdo ) or as a small mats ( like a small door mat )
"Maatjes" refers to the size of the herring ( Maat can be translated as Size )

Not one I've come across before and had to look up how they were prepared. Salt cured, then gutted and trimmed, hence why it is still oily.
I have however enjoyed rollmop herring quite a few times, which is the same fish, filleted, and pickled, often with onion. On buttered bread, with some of the onions, and maybe a bit of mayonnaise, and some pepper, very tasty.
Good drills getting the kids to try a wide range of foods at a young age.
Born in the UK I grew up in many countries including Hong Kong, Malawi, and Germany, and we typically had a wide range of cuisines at home, but with Mum's family being from Belgium, as a kid I had already had things like mussels, frogs legs, filet americain (raw beef pate) and lots of other different types of foods.

The onion is added to it in a time in the past to mask the tast of the herring being on the edge of rotting due to the long way it had to go from catch to the actual eat before the modern day cooling.

Very brave trying so many things👍 great for your children. It is like sushi. Pickles in America are different, usually it's salty where in the Netherlands it is without salt and only sweet and sour. Onion is great with herring.. never heard of egg eaten with it. Herring is very fatty and thus very good for you. Herring is nice.. but I prefer smoked eel. It's not allowed to be sold in supermarkets anymore because the eel population went way down and is now endangered. But great to see you guys let your children try things without pushing them.

``Sushi`` is a posh expensive overpriced dubious tiny piece of unknown fish on a bed of gluey cold rice wrapped in seaweed and covered in sauces to mask the fish flavour. Herring is an honest affordable and very healthy down to earth unequalled delicacy . ``Sashimi`` is raw untreated fish, also expensive but the worms are free, and usually eaten with very hot green Wasabi sauce again to subdue the fish flavour. P.s. Herrings are the healthiest fish on earth, they are never eaten raw, they are treated by snap freezing @ around -35 C and/or salted, but they don`t taste very salty.

0:30... its called "Maatjesharing" and not Matjesherring.
(A "Matje" is a small floormat, so that's wrong.)
Its called a "Maatje". That is Dutch for 'a friend', 'a buddy'. But the name has been corrupted from "Maagden haring" (Maagd means 'virgin') Because the fish has been caught before it has mated.

When it is fresh from the fish specialist it makes a world of a difference. It would taste slightly creamy and fresh. When having it from the package like you did it will be kind of slimy and unpleasant. Please, don't torture yourselves like this.

The Dutch on the label is wrong.
It is maatjesharing. Double a, one a, matjesharing, is not Dutch. It means something weird in Dutch.
A maatje, a maat is Dutch for an union of measurement, from long before the French meter.
But in this context it means haring (so traditional Dutch herring) from a standardized traditional wooden vat. And in this vat was where the actual magic happened, during the winter. In spring time it was ready, and then we got the first fresh herring, maatjes haring.
In fact a fermented herring in a juice of pekel (a type of salt) and its own enzymes.
Maybe it sounds gross to none Dutch, but trust me, if you have a real haring. Really first class, wake me up, I will pay you later good money.

    Haring is not raw.
    It is not raw.
It is fermented in pekel and its own enzymes, freed initially by a process calls in Dutch kaken.
Kaken is a verb and a procedure on how to process fresh herring, the traditional Dutch way, in order to preserve it for months to come, especially during the winters in the small ice age.
I can only imagine how freaking good original traditional haring tasted. Sometimes we were lucky, that’s a delicatesse. It doesn’t need onions, or pickles, that’s a disgrace, and not traditional at all. Merely a selling trick for bad herring. Te vaak opgezouten, was the original reason to add onion. Don’t know how to translate that, but trust me. Good Dutch herring goes like that. No parts, no onions, no pickles, nothing. Get it from a traditional Dutch wooden vat, grap it by the tail hang it in your mouth, bite, heaven.
I like your attempt, I appreciate the interest for my culture. But Dutch herring, I am not sure it really exists nowadays.
And finally, with hard boiled eggs?
No, really not, definitely not, no, meaning the Dutch way no.
