Thanks so much! I hope you have an amazing time. Also try Indonesian food (rijsttafel / rice table) and whatever looks good from the seafood stalls around the city. I don't think it will be herring or eel season, but maybe smoked mackerel and some other good stuff 😎
What a fun intro to a lot of these foods we've heard about. No seafood, but raw beef, ok LOL ... thoroughly enjoyed your video. We're headed over with a group next May to FINALLY see those tulips ..... oh and eat all that yummy food + drinks XO, Kelly
Cannot think of another actual food tour of a day in Amsterdam. I really like that you concentrated on the food. Made my mouth water. Especially the dinner pancake. I was thinking pizza when you stated "you'll never guess"...cheese & onion are to me like PB&J to others...yummy! If you are growing your presentation, might I suggest a bit of history of the surrounding buildings. Nothing too elaborate, but to kind of let us know where you are, to set the atmosphere. Happy you both are in a satisfactory relationship...brilliant!
Well I always have joghurt with muesli + fresh fruit. Lunch could be a broodje haring or a portion of kibbeling with curry sauce. Evening meal could be hot or a full salad.😅
Some day we went to see The Beasty Boys at AZO. Had the best MDMA before though I had to throw up at FEBO’s, eaten the best bamiball ever and wear the T-shirt ever ever since.
It also has nothing to do with keeling over when your drunk. It just the feeling you have in your head combining the two together. Dutch think your brave when you try it.
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed watching. Funny to see my city and all its "delicatessen" from an outsiders perspective. We might not have the most refined snacks, but they're delicious all the same❤
What a great extensive Food guide. I also will have my vlog on my recent food experience and visit. What camera are you using if I may ask. Fantastic quality. Thanks.
That's awesome! Good luck :) We have all of our equipment linked here: www.waysoftheworldblog.com/our-equipment-and-packing-essentials/ - we love our little vlogging camera!
I love Amsterdam and Maastricht. The stroopwaffel is my top favorite and second is the lunch or dinner crepe with ham and cheese. And the Dutch people are very friendly and helpful.
Thanks! Yea, I hear Maastricht is a very wonderful city! And yes, the Dutch are typically friendly, and I find most have a great balance of being sociable but also not overwhelming 😉
One of the best food tastings in Amsterdam I have seen on TH-cam. Lived most of my life in Amsterdam, now expat in Athens and you really showed a lot of the real stuff. However, besides brodjes kaas the Dutch eat many other things in the morning, like pindakaas (peanut butter) and hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles). Ossenworst is originally brought to the Netherlands by Jews, like Pekelvlees (kind of pastrami)
With the big pancake I would roll up the naturel ones with stroop en/of poedersuiker but the filled pancakes (my favorite is one with bacon and cheese or in dutch spek en kaas) with a bit poedersuiker (powder sugar) and slice it in to pieces. If you roll the filled ones they get so big and I like to enjoy my food instead of quickly chewing it away 😉 And that filet American you showed was a bit pale. I'm used to the brighter red Filet American you can buy in the supermarket 😉
Oh that makes sense! We were taking some massive bites out of that giant pannenkoek! Also I wouldn't have imagined poedersuiker on the savory ones 🙂 And yes... the filet american was different from the store - maybe they mixed in some mayo? I honestly don't quite remember...
Has Febo gone as in many stations you now find smullers which is the same concept. when i come across I love kaasbroodje which are hot chees puff pastry rolls as opposed to broodje kaas which is a cheese bread roll.
When I was in Amsterdam we went to a Rijkstable (rice table). It was an amazing experience. All of the Indonesian spices were wonderful & since everything was put out in it's own little container you could create something fun. It was also interesting as I learned a bit about Indonesia & have since become fascinated with Bali. In Bali everyday chores are treated as a meditation & their food is another form of meditation.
Sounds delicious! We will be back in Amsterdam in April and hope to have time for non-Dutch foods popular in the Netherlands video -rijsttafel is on the list 😊 do you remember the name of the place you went?
Being born and raised in Amsterdam, this was really fun to watch! Saw so much places where my footprints are🧡 And I love Febo!! Best milkshakes and always eat a speciaaltje! You went to van Dobben in de Kalverstraat, but didn't eat the van Dobben kroket?????? 😱 That's what made them famous! Anyway, I'm gonna watch more of your videos! Keep it up😘
Glad you enjoyed the video! I had no clue FEBO had great milkshakes - and we didn't have kroket because we already were planning to get bitterballen later in the vid... I thought they were too similar 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for the comment 😎
I had never seen an unrolled pancake, until being in USA.....at home, ( Australia) we sometimes made crepe suzettes..... Pancakes, poured thin, eggy , always rolled...and so delicious!
Thank you! I (Aimara) am from Venezuela but moved to the US when I was 27. Gordon was born in the US but his parents and entire family are Dutchies :) - we both sort of "live" in the US now.
We in Amsterdam put the stroopwafels from the supermarket on our cup thee or coffee or put it very short a vieuw seconds in de microwave...its dilisious❤
Haha, do I get points for spotting the guy in the van waving? 8:05 I find the Netherlands very green and beautiful. Next visit I am definitely going to try some of this food. Thanks for another great video guys! 💛 Gezellig!
Hello Aimara & Gordon 😊 I came across your video amongst numerous other's but yours captured it a little bit better. I am glad to see that you found Van Dobben because they're serving things typical for Amsterdam! 1st, Ossenworst origins lay in this city. 2nd, you must try broodje Van Dobben (kroket) next time 😉. 3rd, try broodje Halfom (cooked liver and salted meat) with butter and pepper or how ever you like it. In my opinion it doesn't need salt added. It's a typical Amsterdam broodje, just try it! Haring is an all-time Dutch favorite, adding pickles comes from, you probably guess it, Amsterdam! Don't go to Leiden and ask for union and pickles with your haring, they will shake their head and ask if you're from Amsterdam 😂. Hagelslag is liked by almost every Nederlander, kids like it most but only a few grow over it! 😄 Personally I like it with peanut butter. It's always best to put it on fresh- or toasted bread, with butter of course! You'll have fun trying it without 😅 I can go on commenting on your video, talking about Amsterdams Zuur and which food from Suriname 🇸🇷 and Indonesia 🇮🇩 that I like 😋. I suggest that you do some research for yourself, maybe ask your family about it. Great food during the winter months! I hope to see you back in December! ❤
I love The Netherlands, lived in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Wish you had discussed Genever, described, Juniper berries, etc. herring. The fact that Indonesian food is such an important part of the cuisine there and describing the rijstaffel.. That Genever is served ice cold, etc. Also frites.. served with mayo and bought on the street. Going in the tents for puffertjes in the winter and seeing the griddle they are cooked on... So much fun.
@@Iamsanni You clearly never lived near the coast here in the Netherlands. Herring is often just eaten as a snack which can be multiple times a week. And Jenever depends on the person, personally I rather take a shot of jenever after work than a beer.
Hey guys, what a nice video! It’s hardly noticeable that Gordon has Dutch roots 😉 A little insider tip: you can put the stroopwafels from the supermarket in the microwave/oven, I like m better that way!
My grandparents were from Rotterdam. Last time I was there was 55 years ago when I was 5 years old. The BEST memory I have is poffertjes from a food cart on one of the bridges. I can get frozen poffertjes from Trader Joes in Arizona, but it's not the same...The Netherlands is on our itinerary for our slow travel in 2025! Can't wait!!
Wow! I love those kind of memories 🥹💞 You guys are going to have a blast in The Netherlands!!! We have a million recs for you too. G's family travels a lot in the country. It's so stunning! Maybe we'll coincide when you're there :) We always go to visit the fam ❤️ PS: need to try the TJ's poffertjes!!!!
Broodje Kaas: (and yes, Kaas is with a capital K, One hill I will die on) I don't eat it every day anymore but yes, absolutely a staple of Dutch food. Personally I rather have the "Tosti", the Dutch variant of the grilled cheese sandwich Saucijzenbroodje: Perfect for when you are traveling by train. A coffee and Saucijzenbroodje from Kiosk is always a winner while watching the cows roll by. Stroopwafel: It is actually one wafer split in two. The "stroop is a syrup made from beetsugar based molasses, brown caster sugar (called basterd zuiker in Dutch) and real butter (called Roomboter in Dutch). For tourists taking a package with them back home. Make a big mug of thee (or coffee) and place your stroopwafel on top as a lid and keep it there for about two minutes. The wafer and stroop will slightly warm up making the cookie softer and more delicious. Poffertjes: The man was correct, you eat them with butter and sugar, all the other "flavors" are purely for tourists. This is also true for the different types of Stroopwafel.. most Dutch will take them just naturel and warm tyvm. van Dobben, famous for their Kroketten and bitterballen. Their biggest competitor is probably Kwekkeboom which also hails from Amsterdam. I went to school in de Jordaan, partime SVH school at Elandsgracht (school for cooks, waiters and everyhting related to the hospitality industry) Biterballen (plural), not Bitterbaalen ;) I bet those are from van Dobben heheheh. And yes, a Bitterbal (singular) and a Kroket are basically the same thing. One is a one bite version (well maybe two) and the other a 3 bite version (maybe 4) The mustard looked to be "Grove Zaanse" which is the best mustard in the world (another hill I will die on) Bamibal/schijf and Nasibal/schijf (Bami is an Indonesian noodle dish, Nasi is an Indonesian rice dish) are only vegetarian if explicitly mentioned. There are also versions that contain small pieces of ham or chicken. So vegetarians should take note of that. As for Febo... haven't been there is years, I prefer the "snackbar" Jamin nowadays is a sad leftover from a really iconic candy store franchisein the Netherlands. Jamin (founded by Cornelius Jamin in 1870) hails from Rotterdam. They used to sell every type of candy imaginable, most made by Jamin themselves. There wafer icecream sandwich was iconic with Xenials and probably Millenials as well. They were the Dutch version of Wonka. Nowadays most of what they sell is made by the big companies. Jenever: Incorrect information. first, it is spelled correctly but said wrong. It is not a kopstotertje, it is a Kopstoot. Secondly a Jenever is not a kopstoot. A Jenever and Beer (seperate glasses) is a kopstoot. You down the Jenever and follow it up with the beer. There is a version called "Duikboot" (submarine) where the glass with Jenecer is dunked into the beer (wglass and all... just like *bloop* ) It is called Kopstootje because the combination can "hit you in the head" For the best pancakes in the Netherlands you have to go to Naturpark Lage Vuursche, in the little village of the same name you find the best pancake restaurants in the country, third hill I will die on. My personal favorites there are the Bosrand and Restuarant de Lage Vuursche.. purely based on how they look as all the pancake restaurants are top notch.
We need more foodie series. I might be wrong, but Amsterdam is the most expensive City I've been to in Europe so far (I was there in 2022). I love the city and the Dutch people. Amsterdam has some good Indonesian restaurants. Cheers, Saludos
Yes, we plan to include Indonesian food on a separate video next Summer. And yes, it's expensive. Not more than other cities like Rome and Paris though... I guess it all depends on where you go, but yes, it is expensive in AMS 🙈 We love that city so much too!! And love the Dutchies too lol obviously! 😍
I never have (or had) a saucijzenbroodje for breakfast. They're more like a snack ... when you're shopping. I had/have cheese for breakfast, but on a baguette. If they have bread for breakfast, most people I know have sliced bread with different toppings. I usually have a mix of savory and sweet: for example cheese, leverworst and peanut butter (on 3 different slices of bread). We used to walk by Febo, but since our grandson isn't a baby anymore we go there sometimes.
Loved the video. As a true dutchie it would be nice to see you travel to other places in the Netherlands. I live in the area of Giethoorn, another iconic place. And in our town Meppel we have a summerfestival every thurday in August. Give it a try!
Thank you! We would love to visit other places, but our budget doesn't really allow us to spend too much time traveling in NL. But even for us it would be really exciting because I only know Noord Holland well, so there's a so much for us to explore. Hopefully soon 🙏
Congrats on your courage : trying the crokets is a feast, a daring one. Cause it sure looks like it, it feels like it to the touch, it smells like it, and well… it tastes like it.
Two observations I have made as American, one Amsterdam is a very beautiful place , two Amsterdam is very expensive , love this explore showcasing many fine restaurants , great place to visit and experience, very modern place.🙂🙏 To a long happy life ,thank you.
Thanks for showing me Dutch food, Gordon and Aimara. I’ve resumed visiting the Netherlands and Belgium every year since the pandemic. I like your frites and pannekoeken but as I now go by cruise ships, I sample less of local food. I also find less vegetarian option in the Continental Europe. What’s your thought about that? June of London, UK
Visit number 14 coming up next week…. There isn’t any decent Indonesian food near me, so I come to Amsterdam about once a year for rijsttafel! And other stuff, of course. The Pretenders at Paradiso, 24 Sept, will be a highlight on this trip. Great food video! (Try the ham and cheese croissants from Albert Heijn… I practically lived in those during a solo visit a few years ago. AH croissants are better than most bakery croissants in the US)
A “kopstootje” is a small glass of jenever put in a large glass of beer. Yes, really, you take the small glass and drop it in the large glass of beer. And then you drink it.
@@WilliamBennett-cl2le Most bars today serve the jenever and beer in separate glasses, where you drink the jenever “ad fundum” and then chase it with beer. But the old fashioned way was dropping the small glass of jenever in the large glass of beer. This version is nowadays called a “U-boat” or “onderzeeër”. The little glass is submerged in the large glass and the trick is not to get hit with the small glass when drinking the last of it.
Yea - I don't know why I didn't think about that during the video haha. I think I remember the name bamiball from my childhood, but clearly what we are wasn't round 🙃 thanks for the comment!
When you back in the Netherlands, please do yourself a favor and buy a saucijzenbroodje from a real bakery. It's one of my all time favorites !! On your next visit to Febo, try the Speciaaltje. Have you guys ever tried the Surinamese and Indonesian foods ? Definately recommend !! Great video !!
Do you have a favorite bakery? 🤤 We'll be back to visit opa in December! we won't be making a video, but we would still like to try it lol - and yes, we've had amazing Indonesian foods in AMS but we didn't want to include those in this video as we want to do a separate one for both Indonesian and Surinamese food next summer. If it's not too much and you can think of recs, please let us know! We would love to try them :) Thanks so much ❤️
@@waysoftheworld_ i'm actually not from AMS, but there is a Kwekkenboom Pattiserie and they claim to have the best saucijzenbroodje. They have nice reviews and they are also the manufacturer of a very good beef kroket. Kwekkenboom and Van Dobben, which you guys visited are considered the best krokets. There is a small Surinamese restaurant called Warung Sranang Makmur and they have the best Saoto soup. The Baka bana which is battered sweet plantain is eaten with their peanut sauce is also good. And basicly all the stir fried noodles are good in the Surinamese kitchen. Maybe also try the Kapsalon fries and the Doner kebab sandwich. Which is the Dutch version of Turkish fast food, most eaten after a night out and not all that sober maybe ; ) Hopefully these recommendations suit your taste buds too. Have fun visiting opa in December !!
Thanks for the tip! There now is a restaurant in Amsterdam with stamppot, but I think it's quite touristy. I always avoided them as a kid, but it's time to give them another try! 😉
Love the video. Could you also do one about Rijsttafel (Rice Table). Was there a few years ago and lots of people are not or do not know about a Rice Table. Really enjoyed the one we ate at, Mogul Indian Restaurant.
Wondering what the sauce was on the broodje kaas, I'm used to just put a bunch of real butter (boeren roomboter) and cheese on a white bun. (Or on so-called tijger bruin, if I'm being healthy lol) love adding some cucumber or tomato slices, for taste and some moisture, as just bread and cheese can sometimes be somewhat dry 😅 Thank God you got the original stroopwafel and not the tourist trap of all sorts of add-ons 🙏 About Febo, hardly ever go there, I believe most people have a small fryer at home. (Allthough a lot of ppl have airfryers instead now, bc thats healthier than frying in oil) and all the snacks to fry are sold at the supermarkets in the frozen section. Lots of families will then (air)fry some in the weekends. Lot cheaper than Febo or any other 'snackbar' 😅 Oeh, and you should 💯 try spek-pannenkoek or ham-cheese with dutch 'champignon-ragout' (unox brand preferably) Also, if you visit in winter, come to Friesland for the real Snert (erwtensoep aka pea-soup) 🤩 and what's also popular in winter in the Netherlands are all the different kinds of stampot we have!
I think it was just some garlicy spread on the cheese sandwich. In hindsight it may have been fun to start with the broodje kaas at my opa's apartment with just butter on an open face bread. And yes, I have had some fried snack dinners when my uncles were in charge of cooking... I don't like it 😂 we usually try to avoid Netherlands in the winter haha - and because my fam now lives in Florida we never really had much erwtensoep. maybe once a year when it was a bit cooler and there was family in town bringing the Hema worst (i think 🙃).
Bami ball? Nasischijf Croket? Once a year? When I go on a special shopping spray in the city? I never drank Jenever in my life... I did drink Berenburg though..
I really must object to the comparison of beef tartar with filet Americain, its nothing like that, and from the footage it didn't look like filet Americain to me anyway. And in Van Dobben I kinda hoped you would get the kroket, Van Dobben kroket is brilliant! Other than that great video and i really appreciate you guys speaking a bit Dutch (our language is hard!) Since you asked, I haven't been in febo for years, but if i go i go for the kaassouffle personally 😊 A kopstootje is a jenever in combination with beer...i don't recommend it... Oooohhhh Dutch pancakes! I know what i want for dinner tomorrow! Suggestion: Vienna maybe? I can use some pointers, or Venice
I think that is in fact Dijon mustard, so from France. we do have Dutch mustard that is more grainy and soo delicious, usually from Groningen or Gelderland
Gezellig is creating a social mood and everything you use to create that social good mood. 🙂 De Drie Fleschjes is legendary! Very old style bar. I always drink a "Boswandeling" at the bar. Try it! Try Indonesian and Surinamese food!
Thank you! Yes, we plan to make that video with Indonesian and Surinamese food next summer. Please send us your favorites if you can! 🙏🏼 Cheers! Thanks so much for watching!!
yea it would be fun! although we try an avoid cold weather as much as we can 😎 also erwtensoep/boerenkool/hutspot are hard to find in restaurants, or no?
There is a stamppot restaurant (I will look up where) and erwtensoep or bruine bonen soep you can in most "eetcafe's" during fall/winter@@waysoftheworld_

Pop your store bought stroopwafel in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, then let it cool enough for the wafel to get a crunch again, but so that the stroop is still lukewarm. You can thank me later 😘

GEZELLIG !! an enjoyable atmospher e /feeling
Yeah!! we made an Amsterdam food tour 🙌 had so much fun exploring one of my favorite places in the world while eating all these awesome foods! ❤🇳🇱
Nice editing, good food, happy couple!
Some day we went to see The Beasty Boys at AZO. Had the best MDMA before though I had to throw up at FEBO’s, eaten the best bamiball ever and wear the T-shirt ever ever since.
Yeah, we love Amsterdam! We live nearby and visit every few months. Your video looks very "gezellig" ! 😊
Yea Amsterdam is the best! Always super gezellig :) we might be back this April 🌷
You have a new subscriber! I too am the child of a Dutch parent and loved seeing all these treats…. A trip down memory lane from my childhood!
How cool! Thanks for joining us 😎 maybe you can find some of the treats like stroopwafels where you are? 🙌 groetjes!
Nice! Just a little adjusment. A 'kopstootje' is not a shot of jenever by itself. It always comes with a beer. It's a combo. 😊
We'll have to give it another try lol dang it 😂 Thank you ;)
@@waysoftheworld_ And here i am, liking your comment, but hate the fact, i couldn't spell, adjusment right. Sorry! 😅🤭
It also has nothing to do with keeling over when your drunk. It just the feeling you have in your head combining the two together. Dutch think your brave when you try it.
and when you put the full shotglass jenever in a pint of beer it is called a duikboot(submarine)
@@ammelovmokum7346 Bedoel je een glas jenever leeggieten bij het bier, of het het glaasje jenever in het bierglas doen?
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed watching. Funny to see my city and all its "delicatessen" from an outsiders perspective. We might not have the most refined snacks, but they're delicious all the same❤
🇳🇱 🙌
What a great extensive Food guide. I also will have my vlog on my recent food experience and visit. What camera are you using if I may ask. Fantastic quality. Thanks.
That's awesome! Good luck :) We have all of our equipment linked here: www.waysoftheworldblog.com/our-equipment-and-packing-essentials/ - we love our little vlogging camera!
@@waysoftheworld_ thank you so much
I love Amsterdam and Maastricht.
You have to visit The Hague, beautiful city near the northsea very cultural and beautiful buildings and museums 🤘🏼🤩
Yea would love to go! And visit Delft, as well 😎 We haven't seen much of that part of NL.
Dear Aimara and Gordon,
Thank you for a very nice video!
Hi Rene! Thanks so much for watching. It was our pleasure. We can't wait to be back ❤️🇳🇱
One of the best food tastings in Amsterdam I have seen on TH-cam.
Its was all beige food and besides the Stroopwaffles, everything else was run of the mill & you can buy in every western country.
Thank you for this video. Wonderful. The city of Amsterdam is really beautiful.
It's such a dream 😍 Thanks so much for watching!
@@waysoftheworld_ Thank you too. 😄
Salty Dutch Drop is my favourite candy!
Brilliant vlog - Bitterballen and beer is truly gezellig ❤
Yes yes!!! It's the first thing we do when we arrive to AMS to see the fam ❤️ The best 🤩
It makes me happy how people from other cultures like our “gezellig” and sometimes make fun of us for it :)
It is so outlandish to me to have to explain what 'gezellig' is.
Thanks for sharing it. The food looks delicious. It's great. 👍👍👍😍😍😍
Thanks for watching ❤️ We had a blast!
Good Amsterdam food tour is mazing for me and Looking delicious, friend😘😍
So good! Thanks for watching! 😊
With the big pancake I would roll up the naturel ones with stroop en/of poedersuiker but the filled pancakes (my favorite is one with bacon and cheese or in dutch spek en kaas) with a bit poedersuiker (powder sugar) and slice it in to pieces. If you roll the filled ones they get so big and I like to enjoy my food instead of quickly chewing it away 😉
And that filet American you showed was a bit pale.
Anaterdam street food tour look yummy and delicious food enjoyed watching here
Thanks so much for watching!! 😊
Unfortunately, No.@@waysoftheworld_
Yes you really should go to a real "Indisch" restaurant and have "rijsttafel" .It is food from Indonesia and beautifully, deliciously spiced
There are several Indische restaurants, but to mention one: Sama Sebo, P.C. Hooftstr.27 Amsterdam
Gezellig,onze bitterballen!!!!
Heb ze nog in de vriezer, zet gelijk mijn frituurpan aan...
Groeten van Tom Elbertsen.
Being born and raised in Amsterdam, this was really fun to watch! Saw so much places where my footprints are🧡
And I love Febo!!
You actually show real Dutch food / snacks, not the stuff tourist queue for because of Tiktok. 👍👍👍
we, the dutchies, only go to febo after a long night in the club :) the frikandel after al lot of drinks tastes the best
hahaha love it! Thanks for sharing!
If you order a savory pancake, we still add syrup (stroop) to it. :D
I had never seen an unrolled pancake, until being in USA.....at home, ( Australia) we sometimes made crepe suzettes..... Pancakes, poured thin, eggy , always rolled...and so delicious!
A cheese sandwich and a sausage roll! How did you cope with that level of fun & excitement??!
sometimes it's the simplest things that bring you joy in life 💫✌🏼
Yes, Febo is great too, after midnight!!👍😀 😅Great city guys, from Ireland ☘️🎉❤❤
hahaha yes!! Thanks for watching. Cheers!! :)
The wafers, you dip or I believe set on top of your coffee and the steam will make the inside gooey
Haha, true Americans but Gordon's Dutch sounds awesome
Guilty 🙋🏻♂️ (although Aimara is born and raised Venezuelan). And yes... i guess the American accent with Dutch is not common to hear 😎
The one thing I really miss when I'm not in the Netherlands, stamppot andijvie, not a restaurant food.
It's " zo gezellig" to eat with family.
Yes it is 💛
where r u guys from if I may ask? thank you for the nice upload, really liked it!:)
💛 Gezellig!
Yes you do get points!! 👏🏼 Nice catch! We didn't even notice hahaha Maybe one day we can meet you there and show you around :) Gezellig! 🥰
Hello Aimara & Gordon 😊
I came across your video amongst numerous other's but yours captured it a little bit better.
You'll have fun trying it without 😅
I can go on commenting on your video, talking about Amsterdams Zuur and which food from Suriname 🇸🇷 and Indonesia 🇮🇩 that I like 😋.
Jenever and herring is not something we would consume weekly though. Most just once in a while.
@@Iamsanni You clearly never lived near the coast here in the Netherlands. Herring is often just eaten as a snack which can be multiple times a week. And Jenever depends on the person, personally I rather take a shot of jenever after work than a beer.
A Dutch travel series would be awesome! Make sure to visit my home city of the Hague.❤
We would never miss your hometown ❤️ Hope we can make this travel series happen in the next couple years 🙏🏼
Oh, you should have had the poffertjes with a little lump of butter. It melts and makes a perfect combination with the “poedersuiker”
Oh there was butter!!! It was glorious 🤩
Hey guys, what a nice video! It’s hardly noticeable that Gordon has Dutch roots 😉
A little insider tip: you can put the stroopwafels from the supermarket in the microwave/oven, I like m better that way!
Hello. Thanks for this great video. Food looks delicious :) See you.
Thanks so much for watching! It was so fun and yummy to make this video 🥰
Simple solution. Buy a poffertjespan online. Batter recipes are online, as are the HowTo videos.
@@_PJW_ we are in the process of getting rid of everything so we can long term travel. I think I'll hold out for the real thing in Amsterdam! 😉
Broodje Kaas: (and yes, Kaas is with a capital K, One hill I will die on) I don't eat it every day anymore but yes, absolutely a staple of Dutch food. Personally I rather have the "Tosti", the Dutch variant of the grilled cheese sandwich
Saucijzenbroodje: Perfect for when you are traveling by train.
I went to school in de Jordaan, partime SVH school at Elandsgracht (school for cooks, waiters and everyhting related to the hospitality industry)
Biterballen (plural), not Bitterbaalen ;) I bet those are from van Dobben heheheh. And yes, a Bitterbal (singular) and a Kroket are basically the same thing. One is a one bite version (well maybe two) and the other a 3 bite version (maybe 4)
The mustard looked to be "Grove Zaanse" which is the best mustard in the world (another hill I will die on)
Bamibal/schijf and Nasibal/schijf (Bami is an Indonesian noodle dish, Nasi is an Indonesian rice dish) are only vegetarian if explicitly mentioned. There are also versions that contain small pieces of ham or chicken. So vegetarians should take note of that. As for Febo... haven't been there is years, I prefer the "snackbar"
Jamin nowadays is a sad leftover from a really iconic candy store franchisein the Netherlands.
There is a version called "Duikboot" (submarine) where the glass with Jenecer is dunked into the beer (wglass and all... just like *bloop* ) It is called Kopstootje because the combination can "hit you in the head"
For the best pancakes in the Netherlands you have to go to Naturpark Lage Vuursche, in the little village of the same name you find the best pancake restaurants in the country, third hill I will die on.
it also one of the more expensive cities in the netherlands
Honour where honour is due, The Hague has the very best Indonesian restaurants of The Netherlands.
@@waysoftheworld_ Perhaps you can try herring too, next time?
Bread beer and cheese. What I love about The Netherlands.
hahaha nice! us too :)
Sauscauzijen broodjes zijn ook niet Nederlands het komt uit Frankrijk dus niet echt nederlands
Yes, Amsterdam has definitely become quite pricey. But like anywhere you can find more affordable spots. Cheers to a long happy life to you, too! 😊
I didn't imagine you drop it into the beer... sounds like a 'sake bomb.'!
No you don't. You 'ad' (ad fundum = to the bottom) the jenever and then drink the beer.
Great video guys👍just one comment when you eat at FEBO: it calls bamischijf instead of bamiball. Carry on with your vlogs👍
Love your sunglasses! Care to share the make?
It’s called a kopstoot if you combine it with a pils beer. Very nice video!
Next time for dinner try the stamppotten there should be a restaurant with real dutch stamppotten 😊
Thanks for the tip! There now is a restaurant in Amsterdam with stamppot, but I think it's quite touristy. I always avoided them as a kid, but it's time to give them another try! 😉
Try Indonesian food and Surinam food as well. They had a big influence on our kitchen,
Love the video. Could you also do one about Rijsttafel (Rice Table). Was there a few years ago and lots of people are not or do not know about a Rice Table. Really enjoyed the one we ate at, Mogul Indian Restaurant.
We may do something like this if we go back in April. Stay tuned! (and thanks for the restaurant tip)
Wondering what the sauce was on the broodje kaas, I'm used to just put a bunch of real butter (boeren roomboter) and cheese on a white bun. (Or on so-called tijger bruin, if I'm being healthy lol) love adding some cucumber or tomato slices, for taste and some moisture, as just bread and cheese can sometimes be somewhat dry 😅
Thank God you got the original stroopwafel and not the tourist trap of all sorts of add-ons 🙏
About Febo, hardly ever go there, I believe most people have a small fryer at home. (Allthough a lot of ppl have airfryers instead now, bc thats healthier than frying in oil) and all the snacks to fry are sold at the supermarkets in the frozen section. Lots of families will then (air)fry some in the weekends. Lot cheaper than Febo or any other 'snackbar' 😅
Oeh, and you should 💯 try spek-pannenkoek or ham-cheese with dutch 'champignon-ragout' (unox brand preferably)
Also, if you visit in winter, come to Friesland for the real Snert (erwtensoep aka pea-soup) 🤩 and what's also popular in winter in the Netherlands are all the different kinds of stampot we have!
Would I be right in assuming that Gezellig is the Dutch (kinda) version of the Scandinavian ‘Hygge’?
It means, good time.
One of the best travel vlog about my country febo van dobben haring stroopwafel very nice real GEZELLIG ✌️
Dank je wel! we hope to make another video in April with more gezelligheid 🙌
@@waysoftheworld_ i hope so
Other than that great video and i really appreciate you guys speaking a bit Dutch (our language is hard!)
Since you asked, I haven't been in febo for years, but if i go i go for the kaassouffle personally 😊
A kopstootje is a jenever in combination with beer...i don't recommend it...
Oooohhhh Dutch pancakes! I know what i want for dinner tomorrow!
Suggestion: Vienna maybe? I can use some pointers, or Venice
I think that is in fact Dijon mustard, so from France. we do have Dutch mustard that is more grainy and soo delicious, usually from Groningen or Gelderland
The food is good, but you do not buy is ready made from Albert Hein. Most of the sandwiches you have to make yourself and use the best ingredients.
yea - this is true. but we had to start out the 'food tour' in the city, and it was a convenient way to get things started 😉
@waysoftheworld next time you order this pancake with the cheese onion and bacon put stroop on it! Believe me....your in for a treat❤
Next time you should make a winter food special! Erwtensoep, boerenkool or hutspot, oliebollen, kerststol, Sinterklaas candy.
yea it would be fun! although we try an avoid cold weather as much as we can 😎 also erwtensoep/boerenkool/hutspot are hard to find in restaurants, or no?
There is a stamppot restaurant (I will look up where) and erwtensoep or bruine bonen soep you can in most "eetcafe's" during fall/winter@@waysoftheworld_
@@waysoftheworld_restaurant in Rotterdam and Amsterdam I am sure there are more
FEBO the odd moments I'd be in the city, I can't pass them without getting a grill burger!
hahaha nice! We relate 😂
Next time at Van Dobben try 'broodje halfom' : liver and a sort of pastrami.
good to know - thanks for the rec! We also have to try their kroket :)
OMG! Visiting Van Dobben and NOT have a broodje Van Dobben kroket and a broodje halfom (liver and pekelvlees) is such a miss; so Gordon next time order both en dat is een order! LOL
Nog vragen?
Haha yea I missed the kroket - I didn't realize it was so iconic! We should be back in April ... I'll follow the order 🫡
FEBO has excellent fries, Coke Zero, and good burgers. I like it!
You should take a pannenkoek with chocolade ijs (Pancake with Choco icecream) :)
Yes! That sounds amazing - next time 🙌
A kopstoot is also a combination of a cold beer and a freezing cold jenever
Thanks! I mixed up the jenever part 🤷🏻♂️ the bartender offered me like 3 different levels of coldness for the jenever. I had no idea what the difference was so I just picked something haha
Pop your store bought stroopwafel in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, then let it cool enough for the wafel to get a crunch again, but so that the stroop is still lukewarm. You can thank me later 😘
hahaha I'm sure we will thank you later!! Thanks so much for sharing ❤️
Van Dobben is well known for its kroketten, next time give them a try as well!
Yes, everyone keeps saying that! We're heading back to AMS in April to visit opa again, and we will for sure be going back there for more!! Thank you 😊
Next time you can try Broodje van Kootje. And order: broodje ei met ui and mayonaise ❤
Broodje van Kootje bestaat allang niet meer.
